I really don't know how I'm going to keep up.”

She sounded tired.

I remember that.

I also remember being pleased that she had called me.

That admission embarrasses me a little now.

I wanted to be the person my family trusted when things became difficult.

There was nothing wrong with wanting that.

The trouble was that I didn't stop to think about what she actually needed.

Then she mentioned the children.

“Maisie and Oliver have been talking about you. They're going to be so happy if you come.”

That settled it.

It was almost ridiculous how quickly those words worked on me.

I hadn't seen the children as much as I wanted lately.

They were growing.

Every visit seemed to bring something new.

A different question.

A new favorite thing.

Another small change in the way they spoke or moved.

I loved the ordinary parts of being their grandmother.

I loved hearing them talk at the same time.

I loved watching them forget what they were saying because something else caught their attention.

I loved the way a visit could turn an ordinary afternoon into something worth remembering.

And I missed them.

More than I usually admitted.

“Of course I'll come,” I told Bianca.

She let out a breath.

“Oh, that's wonderful.”

I could almost see her relaxing.

I thought I had taken a worry off her shoulders.

Maybe I had.

I just didn't understand how much she intended to put on mine.

“I'm going to leave early tomorrow,” I said. “It's a long drive.”

“That's fine. Just come when you can.”

There was a pause.

I waited for her to say something about what she and the children had planned.

Maybe an outing.

Maybe time together at home.

Instead, she thanked me again.

A quick thank-you.

Then the call ended.

I sat there with the phone in my hand.

Three hours away.

That was how far Graham and Bianca lived from me.

It wasn't a journey I made without thinking about it.

I had to prepare.

I had to pack.

I had to make sure I had everything I would need for several days.

But none of that felt like trouble.

I was already imagining Maisie and Oliver waiting by the door.

Looking back, I notice how much of that picture came from me.

Bianca hadn't promised a cheerful welcome.

She hadn't described a week of family time.

She had said she couldn't manage.

Then she had mentioned that the children missed me.

I treated those two statements as if they meant the same thing.

They didn't necessarily.

I didn't understand that yet.

I went into the kitchen.

Four jars of strawberry jam sat waiting.

I had made them myself.

The strawberries had been good, and I had taken care not to cook the mixture too long.

I liked the color.

I liked seeing the fruit through the glass.

It was a simple thing.

Homemade jam.

But I knew the children enjoyed it.

I checked the lids.

Then I wrapped each jar carefully so the glass wouldn't knock together during the drive.

Four jars.

I can still picture them on my kitchen counter.

They looked cheerful there.

As if I were preparing for something happy.

After that, I got the gifts.

I had things for Maisie and Oliver that I wanted to bring along.

Nothing about the presents was meant to impress anyone.

I simply wanted them to know I had thought about them.

I wrapped them myself.

I pressed the paper down neatly at the corners.

I checked the names before setting the packages beside the jam.

It was such a grandmotherly thing to do.

And I was happy doing it.

I wasn't thinking about money.

I wasn't thinking about favors.

I wasn't thinking about who owed whom.

I was thinking about arriving at my son's house and being part of my grandchildren's days.

For once, I wouldn't have to leave after a short visit.

I would be there in the morning.

I would be there when they came to the kitchen.

I would hear their voices from another room.

That was what I believed I had been invited to enjoy.

There was work involved, of course.

Any grandmother who has spent time with young children knows that.

You help them eat.

You tidy what they leave behind.

You pick things up.

You answer the same question more than once.

I expected all of that.

What I did not expect was to discover that the word “visit” meant something entirely different inside Bianca's house.

That Sunday night, I packed my clothes.

I tried not to take too much.

A week sounded long until I started thinking about everything I might need.

I put things into my bag, took a few out, and then put some of them back.

I wanted to be comfortable.

I wanted to be prepared.

Mostly, I wanted to arrive without giving anyone a reason to worry about me.

I had always tried to make myself easy to have around.

I didn't like being a burden.

I didn't like people rearranging their lives because I needed something.

There was a kind of pride in that.

A foolish kind, sometimes.

I didn't know yet how far I would carry it.

Before going to bed, I checked the jam again.

One jar had shifted slightly against another.

I tucked the wrapping more firmly around it.

Then I set the packages together where I would see them in the morning.

I remember smiling.

That is one of the details that stayed with me.

I smiled at four jars of jam.

I smiled at a few wrapped gifts.

I smiled because I thought I was about to spend a week being Grandma.

The next morning, I got up early.

I dressed for the drive.

I put my suitcase into the car.

Then I carried the gifts and jam out carefully.

I didn't want anything damaged before it reached the children.

It was nearly three hours to their house.

The road was familiar enough.

I knew I had a long stretch ahead, and I settled into it.

As the miles passed, I thought about the children.

I wondered what Maisie would tell me first.

I wondered whether Oliver would remember the jam.

I wondered how Graham was feeling about leaving home for another business trip.

I also thought about Bianca.

I had heard strain in her voice.

Maybe she truly was exhausted.

Maybe having another adult in the house would give her a chance to rest.

I didn't resent that possibility.

Quite the opposite.

I wanted to help her.

Families were supposed to help one another.

That belief had guided me through most of my life.

I had never kept a list of what I gave my son.

I didn't expect repayment for every meal I cooked.

I didn't think affection could be measured by how much time someone spent washing dishes.

When someone in the family needed help, I believed you simply did what you could.

And I could help.

I had the time.

I knew how to run a household.

I knew how to cook without making a fuss.

I knew how to manage children while getting other things done.

Those were ordinary skills.

At least, they were ordinary to me.

I didn't consider them something anyone would put into an account.

I reached their neighborhood late that morning.

The last part of the drive always made me feel closer to the children.

I looked for the familiar house.

When I pulled up, I checked that I had everything.

The suitcase.

The gifts.

The jam.

I was tired from sitting in the car, but I still felt eager.

I went to the door.

Bianca opened it.

She was wearing silk pajamas.

Her phone was in her hand.

I noticed both things right away.

There was nothing wrong with either.

People wore pajamas at home.

People carried phones.

I didn't judge her for that.

What caught my attention was the way she looked past me almost immediately.

As if the most important thing about my arrival was that I had finally arrived.

“You made it,” she said. “I'm so glad.”

I smiled.

“Good morning to you, too.”

She stepped aside.

“Come in.”

I lifted my bag.

“I brought a few things for the children.”

“That's nice.”

Her attention had already returned to the phone.

I stood there for a moment, adjusting my grip.

I had imagined a very different beginning.

But I reminded myself that she was worried about the week ahead.

She had asked for help.

I had come to give it.

There was no reason to be sensitive about a rushed welcome.

That was what I told myself.

I took another step inside.

Then I looked toward the kitchen.

The sink was crowded with dishes.

Not one or two things left from breakfast.

Dishes piled against other dishes.

Cups.

Plates.

Things that should already have been washed.

I stopped looking at Bianca.

My eyes moved across the room.

The living room was full of laundry.

Clothes were spread over the furniture and gathered in piles.

I could see immediately that this wasn't a house where someone had simply forgotten to straighten a cushion.

There was work everywhere.

I had expected to find my grandchildren.

Instead, the first thing I saw was everything that needed cleaning.

I tightened my hand around the bag.

Bianca was still holding her phone.

And I understood, for the first time, that this week might not be the visit I had pictured.

<a
