2 – Everyone Thought Walter Was a Responsible Husband, While I Had Spent Decades Explaining Every Small Thing I Bought

There was a reason people admired Walter.

He understood responsibilities that could be measured.

A mortgage payment had a due date.

A car needed maintenance.

An insurance policy needed renewing.

A furnace needed checking before winter.

Walter was good at those things.

He took pride in doing them before anyone had to remind him.

I never had to wonder whether he knew when the insurance expired.

He knew.

He always knew.

And if someone praised him for being organized, he accepted the compliment as though it explained everything important about being a husband.

For years, I let it.

I suppose I wanted our marriage to look successful as much as he did.

There was comfort in believing we had built something solid.

We had raised children.

We had maintained a home.

We had stayed together through ordinary difficulties.

That counted for something.

But there were questions I had stopped asking myself.

Was I happy with the way decisions were made?

Did Walter value my judgment?

Could I spend money without feeling as though I owed him an explanation?

Those questions seemed small compared with the responsibilities of keeping a family going.

So I put them aside.

I had become very good at putting things aside.

When our children were young, groceries were one of the subjects Walter watched most closely.

He wanted to know what we spent.

He liked comparing one shopping trip with another.

If the total was higher, he noticed.

Even twenty dollars could start a conversation I didn't want to have.

He would ask what had changed.

What I had bought.

Whether we had really needed it.

I learned to expect those questions.

At first, I answered them without much thought.

I explained that prices changed.

That children needed things.

That running a household didn't mean buying precisely the same items every week.

But explanations became exhausting when they were required so often.

Eventually, I found myself considering Walter's reaction before I bought anything.

I wasn't thinking only about what we needed.

I was thinking about what I could defend.

There is a difference.

One is ordinary household budgeting.

The other is living as though every small purchase might become evidence against you.

I didn't have those words then.

I only knew that shopping could leave me tense.

Not because we had no money.

Because I never knew which expense Walter would decide was unnecessary.

He could look at an amount that meant very little to him and make me feel foolish for spending it.

A blouse was another matter.

If I came home with something new to wear, he noticed.

It didn't have to be expensive.

It didn't have to be extravagant.

The fact that it was new was enough to invite a question.

Did I really need another one?

Was there something wrong with what I already owned?

Couldn't I have waited?

I would find myself explaining a purchase that should have required no defense.

Sometimes I wondered why I bothered buying anything for myself.

Then I felt guilty for having that thought.

I had a husband who paid the mortgage.

I had a home.

Our children had been provided for.

Surely, I told myself, I should be grateful.

That was how I kept talking myself out of recognizing a problem.

Walter didn't have to make me feel guilty every time.

I had learned how to do it alone.

The old sofa was another example.

I remember mentioning the possibility of replacing it.

Not demanding.

Not insisting.

Just raising the idea.

Walter had a great deal to say about why the sofa we owned was still suitable.

He could explain the matter for twenty minutes.

He always had reasons.

A new sofa cost money.

The old one still served its purpose.

There was no point spending unnecessarily.

And on the surface, those arguments sounded sensible.

I knew households needed budgets.

I knew money could be wasted.

I wasn't asking for a life without limits.

I was asking to have some voice in deciding where those limits belonged.

That was the part Walter never seemed interested in discussing.

Once he had decided something wasn't necessary, the conversation was essentially over.

I could agree.

Or I could continue arguing until both of us were tired.

Usually, I agreed.

It was easier.

That word again.

Easier.

I used it so often in those years that I almost made it a principle.

It was easier to keep the sofa.

Easier to leave the blouse in the shop.

Easier to put something back at the supermarket.

Easier to let Walter decide where we went on vacation.

I sometimes wonder how many choices I surrendered simply because I didn't want another discussion.

I couldn't count them now.

But I remember the feeling.

The quiet irritation.

The way I would tell myself it wasn't important enough to fight over.

Then came the purchases Walter made for himself.

Golf clubs.

Those were different.

Walter could return home with new equipment and explain that the price had been too attractive to ignore.

And that was supposed to be enough.

He had found something worthwhile.

He had made a sensible choice.

There was no need to review the household budget or discuss whether his old clubs still worked.

He had wanted them.

He had bought them.

End of conversation.

I noticed the difference.

Of course I noticed.

I wasn't blind.

But noticing something and confronting it are not the same.

For years, I chose not to confront it.

Sometimes I tried to be fair to Walter in my own mind.

He worked hard.

Golf was something he enjoyed.

Perhaps he deserved an occasional purchase without having to explain himself.

I believed that.

What bothered me was that the same consideration rarely came back to me.

I didn't resent his enjoyment.

I resented having to defend mine.

That distinction took me far too long to make.

Walter never described himself as controlling.

He would have been offended by the word.

He considered himself careful.

Practical.

Financially responsible.

And there were enough examples of his responsibility that other people were willing to believe him.

So was I.

For a long time.

A person can be responsible in one part of life and unfair in another.

I wish someone had told me that when I was younger.

I might have understood why I could appreciate Walter's hard work and still feel diminished by his decisions.

Instead, I treated those feelings as disloyal.

I was ashamed whenever I thought our arrangement wasn't fair.

I wondered whether I expected too much.

Whether I was being selfish.

Whether the problem was simply that I didn't understand money as well as he did.

Walter had more experience earning it.

He made sure I remembered that.

I had less confidence arguing about it.

Over the years, those two things strengthened each other.

The less confident I became, the easier it was for Walter to make the decisions.

The more decisions he made, the less reason he saw to consult me.

And eventually, we stopped behaving as though money was something we managed together.

Walter decided.

I adjusted.

It didn't happen in a single year.

It happened gradually, between grocery bills and household expenses, while our children grew older and the routines of family life kept going.

There was always another practical reason not to argue.

Someone needed attention.

Something needed doing.

A payment was due.

Life carried on.

I became accustomed to Walter being the final authority on what was sensible.

And he became accustomed to me accepting his conclusions.

That was the marriage people saw from outside.

A dependable husband.

A wife who didn't make trouble.

A household that seemed to run smoothly.

They didn't see the conversations behind closed doors.

They didn't hear the questions about twenty dollars.

They didn't understand why a new blouse could make me uneasy.

They didn't know how often I had decided against something simply because I couldn't bear explaining it.

By the time Walter reached seventy, those habits were deeply established.

He had spent decades making decisions about our money.

I had spent decades living with them.

So when he organized an expensive birthday dinner and expected me to cover the bill, he wasn't behaving like a different man.

He was following the same rules he had always used.

There was only one difference.

This time, the money he wanted came from my retirement savings.

And this time, I couldn't make myself believe that keeping quiet was the sensible thing to do.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Had Given Up Full-Time Work
