10 – Walter Had Always Called Himself the Provider, but I Began Counting the Years of Work He Had Never Considered Worth Anything

The word provider had followed me through most of my marriage.

Walter used it proudly.

He liked reminding people that he had taken care of his family.

And for many years, I agreed without hesitation.

He had earned a steady income.

He had kept the mortgage paid.

He had made sure the cars were maintained and the insurance stayed current.

Those things were important.

They helped give our family stability.

I had never wanted to deny Walter credit for them.

But as I sat in front of the birthday bill, I began asking myself why his contribution had always been described so clearly while mine seemed to disappear.

I had given our family years of work.

Years that didn't arrive with a paycheck.

Years Walter rarely included when he talked about providing.

I remembered leaving full-time employment after our second child was born.

At the time, I didn't think of the decision as a sacrifice.

It felt like something our family needed.

Walter earned more.

The children needed care.

And we arranged our lives accordingly.

I believed we were making a decision together.

Perhaps we were.

But I hadn't realized how differently that decision would affect the way Walter viewed our contributions.

His paid work became proof of responsibility.

My unpaid work became something expected.

He could point to his salary.

I could point to the children we had raised.

But when financial disagreements arose, the salary seemed to count more.

That was the part I had never been able to explain to myself.

I was there for our children because someone needed to be.

There were daily responsibilities that couldn't simply be postponed.

I made room for them.

I adjusted my time.

I arranged my days around what the family required.

And I was glad to do it.

I loved being their mother.

Nothing about my anger toward Walter changed that.

But I had also contributed to the household in ways that made his working life possible.

He rarely acknowledged that when discussing money.

I thought about the years that followed.

Our youngest eventually started school.

I might have returned to working more hours.

But Walter's mother began having health difficulties.

She needed assistance.

And I spent several years helping her.

That was another decision shaped by family responsibilities.

I didn't resent helping her.

She was part of our family.

I wanted her to have support.

But I did give time.

A great deal of it.

Time that couldn't be used for other things.

Time that wasn't building my own earnings.

Time that didn't become retirement savings.

I had accepted those years as part of the responsibilities we shared.

Only now was I beginning to question how much of that responsibility had actually been shared.

Walter had continued working.

His financial contribution remained visible.

Mine remained something that happened quietly.

Without a wage.

Without a title.

Without an amount anyone could compare to his paycheck.

I had never asked him to place a dollar value on caring for our children or helping his mother.

But I had wanted him to recognize that those years mattered.

And now, looking at nearly four thousand dollars he expected me to spend, I wondered whether he ever truly had.

Later, I had taken the part-time job at the medical supply company.

I remembered how pleased I was to work again.

The company was small.

The tasks were ordinary.

I handled invoices and answered the telephone.

It wasn't impressive work in Walter's eyes.

He made that clear.

He often reminded me that my wages were small.

I knew they were.

Nobody needed to explain that to me.

But the work still mattered.

I completed the tasks expected of me.

I showed up.

I contributed.

And earning something of my own gave me a sense of usefulness that I hadn't realized I missed.

Walter's comments sometimes took that pleasure away.

He didn't have to insult the job directly.

A comparison with his income was usually enough.

He earned more.

My wages were modest.

The implication was that his opinions about money deserved greater weight.

I had allowed those comparisons to settle into my thinking.

Even when I disagreed with him, I began from the assumption that he knew better.

That was a terrible habit.

One I had practiced so long that I stopped recognizing it.

I didn't think Walter understood the effect of those remarks.

Or perhaps he understood and considered them justified.

I couldn't know.

But I knew how they had affected me.

They had made me hesitant.

They had made me question whether my work deserved pride.

And they had encouraged me to believe that earning less meant being entitled to less.

That last belief was especially painful.

Because I had never contributed less effort simply because I brought home less money.

My work was different.

That was all.

The responsibilities I carried were not the same as Walter's.

They couldn't be compared simply by putting two paychecks beside each other.

Yet that was how he had evaluated us for years.

I thought about what would happen if I tried explaining all this to him at the restaurant.

I could imagine his expression.

The impatience.

The insistence that I was making too much of things.

He would probably remind me again that he had supported the family.

And I would be tempted to acknowledge that immediately.

Because it was true.

He had.

But I had supported the family too.

Not in exactly the same way.

Not with the same amount of money.

But with years of labor and responsibility that our family had needed.

I had spent too long allowing that truth to remain unspoken.

Walter's birthday dinner made the imbalance impossible to ignore.

He wanted to use my retirement savings.

He wasn't asking me to contribute a small amount to an expense we had discussed.

He wanted almost four thousand dollars for a celebration he had arranged.

And he expected me to accept the request because I was his wife.

I tried to understand what that meant from his point of view.

He probably saw the money as part of what was available to our household.

He may have believed that marriage entitled him to make such requests.

But I couldn't understand why the same marriage had so often required me to justify spending much smaller amounts.

If our resources belonged to both of us, shouldn't decisions about them belong to both of us too?

That question stayed with me.

It was almost embarrassingly simple.

I had spent years thinking of marriage as a place where one person earned and another supported.

But support should never have meant giving away the right to be consulted.

And earning more should never have meant owning every decision.

Walter had always been proud of his responsibility.

I wished he could understand that responsibility included respecting the person who had spent decades standing beside him.

Not merely expecting her cooperation.

Not dismissing her income.

Not treating her retirement money as something available whenever his plans became expensive.

I looked at my hands again.

I thought about the years they represented.

Raising children.

Helping his mother.

Handling office work.

Doing the ordinary tasks that kept our lives moving.

There was no total printed anywhere for those years.

No document showing their value.

No salary figure Walter could compare with his own.

But they mattered.

I knew they mattered.

For once, I allowed that knowledge to be enough.

I didn't need Walter to agree before I could recognize my own contribution.

I didn't need him to announce that my years of unpaid work had value.

I would have liked to hear him acknowledge it.

Of course I would.

After forty-two years, that recognition would have meant something.

But I couldn't keep waiting for him to give me permission to respect myself.

I thought about my retirement money differently now.

It wasn't simply an amount set aside.

It represented my ability to face the years ahead with some security.

It mattered because my working life had been shaped by the choices we made for our family.

It mattered because I couldn't easily replace it.

And it mattered because I had a right to decide whether an expense was worth taking from it.

Walter had chosen an expensive birthday celebration.

That was his decision.

I hadn't tried to prevent him from enjoying himself.

I hadn't objected to the family gathering.

I hadn't questioned his desire to celebrate seventy years of life.

But I had not agreed to finance the evening.

That fact remained.

No matter how he described our marriage.

No matter how much he had earned.

No matter how confidently he expected me to comply.

I could appreciate everything Walter had done without accepting that he was entitled to everything I had.

The thought felt almost disloyal at first.

Then I recognized that feeling.

It was the same guilt that had followed me through so many financial disagreements.

The guilt that appeared whenever I wanted something different from what Walter wanted.

I had treated it as evidence that I was being selfish.

But perhaps guilt wasn't always telling me the truth.

Perhaps it was simply the feeling of doing something unfamiliar.

Of refusing an expectation I had accepted for too many years.

I sat with that possibility.

It didn't remove my discomfort.

I still wanted the argument to end.

I still wished Walter had never placed the bill in front of me.

But my answer remained the same.

I wasn't going to use my retirement savings for his birthday dinner.

Not because I wanted to punish him.

Because I had finally begun recognizing that my future mattered too.

And I wasn't willing to make it smaller so he could continue believing he had the right to decide everything.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Longer Walter Expected Me to Give In, the More Clearly I Saw the
