10 – I Kept Returning to Those Three or Four Missing Days, Even Though Maggie Was Too Weak to Help Me Understand Them

The number wouldn't leave my mind.

Three days.

Possibly four.

I had given that answer so many times that it no longer sounded like a guess.

It sounded like something written down and made permanent.

I wished I could take it back and replace it with something exact.

I wanted to tell the doctors precisely when Maggie had become ill.

I wanted to explain how her symptoms had changed.

I wanted to describe what had led us to this ambulance.

But every time I tried to organize my thoughts, I came back to the same uncertainty.

I hadn't understood enough.

And Maggie was too exhausted to explain anything now.

I looked at her lying beside me.

Her eyes were closed.

Her breathing continued beneath the oxygen mask.

I watched the faint movement of her hand.

I could see her wedding ring.

I could see the familiar lines across her knuckles.

Nothing about those details seemed unusual.

But her stillness was something I couldn't get used to.

I leaned a little closer.

"Maggie, sweetheart."

Her eyelids moved.

I waited.

She opened her eyes slightly.

I had a question ready.

I wanted to ask when she first began feeling this weak.

I wanted to ask whether she remembered exactly what had happened.

But then she looked at me.

There was so little strength in that glance.

I couldn't bring myself to ask.

Instead, I smiled.

"Don't worry about anything."

She watched me.

"I'll tell them what I know."

Her eyes closed again.

I sat back.

The promise frightened me because what I knew seemed so small.

I knew she had been unwell for days.

I knew she had become terribly weak.

I knew she was struggling to remain awake.

I knew that when someone spoke, she sometimes opened her eyes.

I knew she recognized my face, or at least seemed to.

Beyond those things, I had questions.

So many questions.

The paramedic checked the equipment again.

I glanced toward him.

"Can I tell you something?"

He looked up.

"Of course."

I hesitated.

"I keep thinking I should have noticed sooner how bad this was."

He listened without interrupting.

"I've been sitting here trying to remember every little thing."

I swallowed.

"But I can't make the days fit together."

He nodded.

"It's useful to tell the hospital team what you do know."

I looked down at Maggie.

"What if it isn't enough?"

He answered calmly.

"They'll assess her condition and ask questions as needed."

I nodded.

That was reasonable.

I knew it was reasonable.

But my thoughts weren't reasonable anymore.

I wanted to arrive with a complete explanation.

I wanted to walk through the hospital doors and tell someone exactly what was wrong.

I wanted to make their job easier so they could help Maggie faster.

But I couldn't manufacture information I didn't have.

I rubbed her hand gently.

"I wish you could tell me."

Her eyes stayed closed.

I regretted the words immediately.

She didn't need to hear another reminder of what she couldn't do.

I leaned closer.

"Never mind, sweetheart."

I lowered my voice.

"You don't have to."

The ambulance continued moving.

I could feel the road beneath the wheels.

I looked toward the paramedic again.

He was watching her carefully.

There was something comforting about the attention he gave her.

He wasn't distracted by my questions.

He didn't seem annoyed by my uncertainty.

He simply continued doing what he had been trained to do.

I tried to learn from that.

There was nothing useful in blaming myself repeatedly while he worked.

I could answer questions.

I could stay calm enough to listen.

I could make sure the people caring for Maggie knew the few things I understood.

That was better than sitting there inventing explanations.

I looked at her again.

Her eyelids lifted.

I leaned forward.

"Hi."

She looked toward me.

For a second, the ambulance felt less frightening.

I could see her eyes.

I could see that she knew where my voice was coming from.

I smiled.

"You're not alone."

She held my gaze briefly.

Then her eyes closed.

I kept holding her hand.

The paramedic adjusted the blanket near her side.

I moved aside.

"Sorry."

"You're fine."

I nodded.

I had heard those words before during the ride.

You're fine.

They were ordinary words.

But they were difficult for me to believe.

I wasn't fine.

I was frightened.

I was ashamed.

I felt as though every question exposed something I should have known.

And beneath all of that, I loved Maggie so much that watching her suffer seemed unbearable.

I looked at the wedding ring on her finger.

There was something painful about realizing how little control marriage gave me over this moment.

We had shared a life.

We had learned each other's habits.

We knew each other's voices and expressions.

But none of that meant I could stop her from becoming ill.

None of it meant I could tell a doctor exactly what was happening inside her body.

Love had taught me many things about Maggie.

It hadn't taught me how to treat her when she was dangerously weak.

I had to accept that.

The paramedic leaned toward her.

"Maggie, can you open your eyes?"

She did.

He spoke to her gently.

I watched without interrupting.

When he finished, I leaned closer.

"Good, sweetheart."

She looked at me.

I stopped myself before I said more.

I didn't need to praise every small movement.

I didn't need to fill every second.

She was trying hard enough.

I let her rest.

The siren continued sounding outside.

I wondered whether we were close to the hospital.

I didn't ask.

The paramedic had enough to do.

And I knew the answer wouldn't change how quickly the ambulance was moving.

I watched the familiar ring on Maggie's hand.

I thought again about those missing days.

I wanted to know what she had felt.

I wanted to know whether she had been frightened.

I wanted to know whether there had been a moment when someone could have understood how serious her condition was.

Those questions mattered.

But they didn't have to be answered in the ambulance.

Maggie needed care now.

I needed to remember that.

The past was troubling me because I couldn't change it.

The present frightened me because I couldn't control it.

I sat quietly for a while.

Then I leaned forward.

"Maggie."

Her eyes didn't open.

I squeezed her fingers gently.

"I love you."

I didn't wait for an answer.

I didn't ask her to prove she heard me.

I simply let the words rest between us.

I had said them thousands of times before.

Sometimes quickly.

Sometimes without much thought.

Sometimes while one of us was leaving a room.

Now every word felt deliberate.

I meant them as much as I ever had.

Perhaps more.

I looked toward the paramedic.

He continued monitoring her.

I realized that when the doctors asked about those missing days, I would have to tell them the truth.

Not a polished version.

Not an answer designed to make me look more attentive.

The truth.

She had been unwell for three or four days.

I didn't know exactly when it began.

I didn't know why she had become so weak.

And I needed their help.

I rubbed my thumb over Maggie's knuckles.

The ambulance continued toward the hospital.

I still wanted the missing days explained.

But I stopped trying to make my wife explain them while she was struggling to keep her eyes open.

<a
