12 – I Had Finally Said That We Needed to Talk, Yet the Hardest Part Was Accepting That Clara Might Need Time I Could Not Measure

The next time Clara woke, she looked more alert.

She still seemed tired, but her eyes focused more easily, and she followed what I said without needing me to repeat myself.

I was grateful for that.

I had spent so long worrying about what might happen that I hadn't allowed myself to appreciate the small signs that she was recovering.

I asked whether she wanted water.

She said yes.

I handed her the cup and waited while she drank.

When she finished, I placed it back on the table.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

She looked at the phone beside the cup.

I noticed the glance.

Then I looked at her face.

She seemed to be thinking about something.

I didn't ask what.

For a few seconds, she held my gaze.

Then she turned toward the window.

I could feel my old impatience returning.

I wanted her to tell me what was happening.

I wanted to stop wondering whether I was misunderstanding her.

But I had promised myself that I would not turn every quiet moment into a demand.

I held on to that promise.

Clara shifted slightly.

"Do you think things will feel normal again?"

The question surprised me.

I considered giving her the answer she probably wanted.

Of course they would.

Everything would settle down.

We would leave the hospital and return to our lives.

The difficult night would eventually become something we remembered without feeling its weight so sharply.

I wanted to believe all of that.

But I couldn't promise it.

"I think we'll have to take things as they come."

Clara looked at me.

"That sounds uncertain."

"It is."

She was quiet.

I continued.

"But we don't have to figure everything out today."

She looked down at the blanket.

For a moment, I wondered whether I had said the wrong thing.

Then she nodded.

"Maybe you're right."

I didn't try to turn her answer into something bigger.

I simply sat beside her.

There were things we needed to discuss.

I knew that.

There were questions I still hadn't asked.

There were moments from that night I couldn't explain.

But I was learning that the need for a conversation didn't mean the conversation had to happen at the exact moment I wanted it.

That was difficult for me.

I liked certainty.

I liked knowing where I stood.

I liked being able to identify a problem and work toward a solution.

This situation offered none of those comforts.

Clara was recovering from a medical emergency.

I was frightened.

The message remained unexplained.

And there was no way to force all those facts into a neat answer.

I had to live with that.

A nurse entered and checked Clara's condition.

I moved aside while she worked.

The nurse spoke to Clara, made a note, and reminded her to rest.

When she left, Clara looked toward the door.

Then she looked back at me.

"Did you tell anyone how bad things got?"

I told her I had spoken to Dr. Bennett.

"I mean anyone else."

"No."

She seemed relieved.

I noticed that reaction, but I didn't immediately attach a meaning to it.

Perhaps she didn't want other people worrying.

Perhaps she wanted to decide for herself what to tell them.

Perhaps she was simply exhausted by the thought of explaining the night to anyone.

I couldn't know.

I had to let those possibilities exist without choosing one just because it fit my fears.

Clara settled against the pillow.

"I don't want everyone asking questions."

"I understand."

"I just need some time."

I nodded slowly.

"Take the time you need."

She watched me.

I could tell that my answer mattered to her.

I also knew that saying those words would mean very little if I continued to watch her as though I were waiting for her to fail a test.

So I tried to behave differently.

I moved the chair away from the table.

I stopped glancing toward the phone.

I asked Clara about her comfort, not about the things she wasn't ready to explain.

When she wanted to rest, I let her rest.

When she wanted to talk, I listened.

It wasn't a perfect change.

My thoughts still wandered.

Sometimes I caught myself wondering who had sent the message and what it said.

Sometimes I imagined that the answer would explain every strange moment from the night.

Then I reminded myself that I didn't know whether the message was connected to anything at all.

I had to stop building a story out of things I couldn't verify.

That was the part I could control.

Clara eventually fell asleep.

I sat beside her and watched the light move across the wall.

The phone stayed on the table.

The cup stood beside it.

The monitor continued its steady rhythm.

I thought about how the night had begun with a doctor standing outside the room, explaining that Clara had been in danger.

At that moment, I had wanted only one thing.

I wanted her to be alive and safe.

Now she was resting in front of me, and I was struggling with questions that seemed impossible to separate from my fear.

I felt guilty about that.

Then I realized guilt would not help either of us.

I couldn't make myself a better partner by pretending I had no concerns.

I could only choose how I handled them.

I could be patient without becoming dishonest about my own feelings.

I could give Clara privacy without demanding that my questions disappear.

And I could wait for a conversation without deciding in advance what the answer would be.

Those choices didn't solve the problem.

They gave me a way to face it.

Clara woke again after a while.

She looked at me and asked whether I was still worried.

I didn't say no.

"Yes," I admitted.

She looked down.

I continued before the old habit of retreating could take over.

"But I'm trying not to let that worry decide everything for me."

She remained quiet.

Then she reached for my hand.

I took it gently.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I didn't know what the future held.

I didn't know whether the conversation we needed would bring relief or pain.

I didn't know what the message on her phone meant, or whether I had given it more importance than it deserved.

But I knew that I loved Clara.

I knew she was recovering.

And I knew that when we were ready to talk, I wanted to hear her answer rather than force her into giving me the one I hoped for.

She squeezed my hand.

I squeezed hers in return.

We stayed that way until she closed her eyes again.

I let the room grow quiet.

Not because I had stopped wanting answers.

Because I had finally accepted that I couldn't decide what those answers would be before Clara had a chance to speak.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: I Thought Giving Clara Space Would Make Things Easier, Until She Asked Me a
