8 – I Finally Understood That I Couldn’t Demand Honesty While Hiding My Own Fear, So I Prepared to Ask Clara What We Had Avoided

I didn't make the decision dramatically.

There was no argument.

No sudden revelation.

No moment when the room seemed to change around us.

I simply sat beside Clara and realized I was tired of being afraid of my own questions.

She was resting.

Her phone lay on the table, its screen dark.

The plastic cup stood beside it.

I had begun to associate those ordinary objects with everything I didn't understand.

I wished I could stop.

I wished the room contained nothing more complicated than a bed, a chair, and the equipment the doctors needed to monitor her.

But I couldn't wish my way out of what I was feeling.

I had to decide what to do with it.

I looked at Clara.

Her face seemed calmer now.

The tension around her eyes had eased, although she still looked exhausted.

I remembered how frightened I had been when Dr. Bennett told me that the doctors had needed to deliver the baby immediately.

For several moments, I had believed I might lose Clara.

That fear had been real.

It still was.

I also remembered the relief I felt when the doctor told me Clara was stable.

I had held on to that relief as though it could explain everything else.

Perhaps I had expected the danger to end all the uncertainty.

It hadn't.

The medical emergency and the silence between Clara and me were two different things.

I was beginning to understand that I couldn't solve one by pretending the other didn't exist.

Clara opened her eyes.

She found me watching her.

"What is it?"

I took a breath.

"I've been thinking."

She waited.

I nearly smiled at the irony.

I had spent hours thinking and almost no time speaking.

"I don't want you to feel pressured to talk before you're ready."

Clara looked at me carefully.

I continued before I could lose my nerve.

"But I also don't want us to keep pretending everything is fine if it isn't."

She lowered her eyes.

I felt my stomach tighten.

I had finally said something close to the truth.

Now I had to wait for her response.

She didn't answer immediately.

I resisted the urge to fill the silence.

For once, I wanted to let her have the time I had promised her.

After a while, she spoke.

"I'm tired."

"I know."

"I don't know if I can talk about anything right now."

I nodded.

"Then we don't have to do it now."

She looked at me.

I tried to make sure she understood what I meant.

"I just want us to be able to talk when you're ready."

Her expression softened slightly.

She looked down at the blanket and moved one hand across it.

I watched her fingers.

I wanted to ask whether she understood the question I hadn't fully asked.

But that would have defeated the purpose of what I had just said.

So I waited.

Clara finally nodded.

"Okay."

It wasn't an explanation.

It wasn't a promise that everything would become clear.

It was simply an acknowledgment.

For that moment, I accepted it.

A nurse came in shortly afterward.

She checked Clara's condition, asked how she was feeling, and made a note on her chart.

I stepped aside.

The nurse reminded Clara to rest and told her to ask for help if she needed anything.

Clara thanked her.

When the nurse left, I returned to the chair.

Neither of us mentioned our conversation.

I didn't know whether Clara wanted to think about it or forget it for a while.

I decided not to force the issue.

Instead, I asked whether she wanted the curtain adjusted.

She said yes.

I stood and moved it slightly.

The light changed across the wall.

It was such a small task that I almost felt foolish for being grateful to have something simple to do.

I returned to my seat.

Clara closed her eyes.

For a while, we were quiet.

I thought about what I would say when we finally talked.

I would tell her that I had been frightened.

I would tell her that I had noticed how she reacted to the phone.

I would tell her that I didn't want to invade her privacy, but I couldn't ignore the feeling that something important was being left unsaid.

Then I would ask her to explain.

Not accuse.

Not demand.

Ask.

I repeated those intentions in my head.

I knew that a conversation rarely followed the order a person planned for it.

I also knew that I had a habit of retreating whenever a difficult moment arrived.

I didn't want to do that again.

Clara stirred.

I looked up.

She reached for my hand without opening her eyes.

I took it.

Her fingers rested against mine.

For a moment, I felt the same relief I had felt when Dr. Bennett told me Clara was stable.

I wanted to believe that holding her hand meant we were still connected in the way we had always been.

Maybe we were.

Maybe the distance I felt was partly the result of fear, exhaustion, and the strange pressure of being in a hospital room after a dangerous delivery.

I had to allow for that possibility.

I couldn't decide what Clara's behavior meant without hearing her speak.

And I couldn't make her speak by watching her more closely.

That was something I should have understood much earlier.

The phone vibrated again.

Clara's fingers tightened around mine for a second.

Then they relaxed.

She opened her eyes and glanced toward the table.

I saw the movement.

She knew I saw it.

Neither of us said anything.

I felt the old urge return.

Ask her.

Find out.

Stop waiting.

But I didn't want to turn a moment of fear into an accusation.

I wanted to give her the chance to speak in her own time.

I also knew I couldn't wait forever without becoming resentful.

Both things were true.

I sat with that uncomfortable truth while the room remained quiet.

Clara looked back at me.

"Can you stay a little longer?"

"Yes."

She nodded.

Then she rested her head against the pillow.

I moved my chair closer and settled beside her.

The phone stayed on the table.

I didn't touch it.

I didn't try to read the screen.

I kept my attention on Clara, on the rise and fall of her breathing, and on the fact that she had asked me to remain.

I wanted to be worthy of that trust.

I wanted to trust her, too.

But trust wasn't going to return simply because I decided I wanted it back.

We would have to speak.

We would have to listen.

And whatever the message meant, I would have to face the answer without allowing fear to make the decision for me.

For the first time since entering the hospital room, I stopped trying to solve everything before the conversation began.

I stayed beside Clara.

I waited for her to rest.

And I prepared myself to hear something I might not like, because I was finally beginning to understand that not knowing could hurt us just as much as the truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Had Promised to Wait Until Clara Was Ready, but the Longer We Sat Together,
