I began.

She turned toward me.

I had no idea what to say next.

I could ask whether she was afraid.

I could ask whether there was something she wanted me to know.

I could ask about the message.

Instead, I looked at her tired face and remembered what the doctor had said about giving her time.

I stopped.

"What is it?" Clara asked.

I shook my head.

"Nothing. I just wanted to check on you."

She studied me for a second.

Then she nodded.

"All right."

She closed her eyes.

I sat there feeling as though I had failed a test I hadn't known I was taking.

I had wanted to be patient.

I had wanted to be supportive.

But I had also wanted an answer.

Those desires weren't necessarily wrong.

The way I was handling them was becoming a problem.

I couldn't expect Clara to understand what I was thinking when I refused to tell her.

I couldn't expect her to offer an explanation for a question I never asked.

And I couldn't keep telling myself that I was protecting her when I was also protecting myself from a difficult conversation.

I knew all of that.

Knowing it didn't make speaking any easier.

A nurse entered to check Clara again.

I stepped aside while she worked.

Clara answered the nurse's questions and followed her instructions.

The nurse made a note and left.

Afterward, Clara looked at me.

"You look terrible."

This time, I laughed softly.

"So do you."

She smiled.

It was the first genuine smile I had seen from her in what felt like a long time.

For a few seconds, the room became familiar again.

We were simply two tired people trying to get through a frightening night.

I wanted to stay in that moment.

I wanted to believe it meant the distance between us had disappeared.

But the phone was still on the table.

And the question remained.

Clara noticed me looking toward it.

Her smile faded slightly.

I looked back at her.

Neither of us spoke.

I could have reached across the distance between us with a simple question.

I could have asked her to tell me what was troubling her.

Instead, I took her hand.

She let me hold it.

That small gesture comforted me.

It also reminded me that affection and honesty were not the same thing.

I loved her.

I believed she cared about me.

But we had reached a point where those feelings alone were not enough to make the room feel safe.

I didn't know what she was keeping to herself.

I didn't know whether there was anything to discover.

I only knew that I couldn't keep treating uncertainty as an answer.

For the first time, I decided that when Clara was ready to talk, I would tell her what I had been afraid to say.

I would ask directly.

I would listen.

And I would stop pretending that silence was the same as understanding.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Finally Understood That I Couldn’t Demand Honesty While Hiding My Own Fear, So I Prepared to Ask Clara What We Had Avoided

The next time Clara reached for her phone, I was looking directly at her.
