6 – The Questions I Kept Swallowing Became Harder to Ignore When Clara Started Watching Me Instead of the Door

By the following stretch of the night, I had stopped pretending I wasn't tired.

My eyes burned.

My back ached.

The chair had become uncomfortable enough that I kept shifting my weight.

Clara noticed.

"You should get some sleep."

"I'm fine."

She gave me a look.

I knew that look.

It was the same one she used when I insisted I could handle something that was clearly wearing me down.

"You don't look fine."

I almost smiled.

Neither did she.

But I didn't say that.

I leaned forward and rested my elbows on my knees.

"I just want to stay until I know you're doing better."

Clara looked at her hands.

"I'm here."

"I know."

She was quiet for a moment.

Then she said, "You don't have to watch me every second."

The words were gentle.

Still, they landed harder than I expected.

"I wasn't watching you."

She raised her eyes.

I heard how defensive I sounded.

I wished I could take the sentence back and begin again.

"I mean, I'm just worried."

"I know you're worried."

She said it without anger.

That somehow made it worse.

I wanted her to be angry.

Anger would have given me something to respond to.

Instead, she sounded tired and careful, as if she were trying to keep the conversation from becoming something neither of us could manage.

I sat back.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"You don't need to apologize."

But I did.

Not because I had done something terrible.

Because I could feel myself turning into someone I didn't recognize.

Someone who noticed every movement and tried to assign it a meaning.

Someone who was afraid to ask a direct question but couldn't stop searching for an indirect answer.

I had always considered myself reasonable.

That night, reason seemed to be the first thing I lost whenever Clara looked away.

She closed her eyes.

I stayed quiet.

After a few minutes, I thought she had fallen asleep, but she spoke again.

"Did you call anyone?"

The question surprised me.

"No. Should I have?"

She shook her head.

"I was just asking."

I told her I hadn't wanted to make unnecessary calls while she was resting.

She nodded.

Then she looked toward the table.

Her phone was still beside the plastic cup.

I followed her gaze before I could stop myself.

She noticed.

I knew she noticed because her eyes returned to mine almost immediately.

I looked away.

I felt foolish.

Neither of us spoke.

A nurse came in shortly afterward and asked Clara a few questions about her pain and whether she needed anything.

Clara answered quietly.

The nurse adjusted the blanket and checked the equipment.

Before leaving, she reminded Clara to call if she felt uncomfortable.

Clara thanked her.

The door closed.

For a moment, the room felt smaller.

I stood to move my chair.

The legs scraped against the floor.

Clara flinched slightly at the sound.

I stopped.

"Sorry."

"It's okay."

I moved the chair more carefully and sat down again.

The phone vibrated once on the table.

Clara looked at it.

I kept my eyes on her face.

She didn't pick it up.

Neither did I.

The sound faded, leaving the room quiet again.

I wanted to ask who had contacted her.

I wanted to ask whether there was someone she needed to speak with.

I wanted to know why a single vibration could change the way we looked at each other.

Instead, I asked whether she needed another pillow.

She said no.

I nodded.

There it was again.

A simple question.

A simple answer.

And everything we weren't saying gathered around it.

I thought about the hours before the delivery.

I thought about how little I had understood about what Clara was experiencing.

I wondered whether there were things I should have noticed earlier.

Had she seemed worried before we came to the hospital?

Had she been distracted in ways I had dismissed?

Had I been too occupied with my own expectations to recognize that she was struggling with something I couldn't see?

I tried to remember.

The memories came back in pieces.

A conversation interrupted by an ordinary task.

A moment when she seemed far away.

A silence I had accepted because I assumed she was tired.

None of those memories proved anything.

That was the problem.

I could turn every ordinary moment into a clue if I wanted to badly enough.

And once I started doing that, I couldn't tell where observation ended and fear began.

Clara opened her eyes.

"What are you thinking about?"

I looked at her.

For once, I almost told her the truth.

I almost said that I was frightened by the distance between us.

That I had noticed her reaction to the phone.

That I didn't know whether I was imagining things or ignoring something important.

The words were there.

I could have spoken them.

Instead, I said, "Nothing important."

Clara watched me.

I knew she didn't believe me.

She didn't challenge the answer.

That silence felt different from the others.

It felt like something we had both chosen.

She turned toward the pillow.

I stared at the floor.

I had wanted her to trust me enough to speak.

Yet when she gave me the chance to speak honestly myself, I had hidden behind two words.

Nothing important.

I felt ashamed.

Not because I had solved anything.

Because I had made the very thing I feared more likely.

We were both sitting in that room, exhausted and frightened, each waiting for the other person to begin a conversation.

Neither of us knew how to start.

The clock continued moving.

The monitor continued its steady rhythm.

Clara eventually closed her eyes again.

I remained beside her.

I promised myself that if she asked me another question, I would answer honestly.

I promised myself that I would stop pretending I had nothing on my mind.

It was a small promise.

I should have been able to keep it.

But when Clara woke later and looked at me, I still couldn't bring myself to ask about the message.

I could only ask whether she felt any better.

She said she did.

I nodded and took her hand.

For a little while, we sat quietly.

I told myself that this was enough for now.

But I had begun to understand that silence did not always preserve peace.

Sometimes it only gave fear more room to grow.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: When Clara Finally
