she told Clara.

Clara nodded.

After the nurse left, I returned to my chair.

I thought about asking whether Clara remembered everything that had happened during the delivery.

I wanted to know what she had been thinking when the doctors decided to act quickly.

But I stopped myself.

She had already answered enough questions that night.

She deserved a little peace.

I leaned back and rubbed my eyes.

For a moment, I could almost imagine that we were home.

I could imagine the ordinary things waiting for us there.

The familiar furniture.

The small daily decisions.

The conversations that began without either person having to prepare for them.

I wanted that ordinary life back.

I wanted it so badly that I was willing to ignore anything that threatened it.

Looking back, that was one of the first things I did wrong.

I mistook avoiding a difficult question for protecting someone I loved.

The distinction seemed small at the time.

It wasn't.

Clara woke again after a while.

She looked around the room as though she needed a moment to remember where she was.

Then she saw me.

"You're still here."

"I said I would be."

She gave a faint smile.

I felt better immediately.

That was how easily she could still affect me.

One small expression from her, and I wanted to believe that everything between us was exactly as it had been before.

She asked for water.

I handed her the cup and waited while she drank.

When she returned it, I placed it carefully on the table.

The phone sat beside it.

Clara watched my hand move away.

I noticed.

This time, I couldn't pretend I hadn't.

"Do you want me to move your phone closer?"

She shook her head.

"No, it's fine."

I withdrew my hand.

Neither of us said anything else.

The silence lasted long enough for me to become aware of how carefully I was sitting.

My shoulders were tense.

My jaw hurt from clenching it.

I released the tension and tried to breathe normally.

Clara turned toward the window.

I looked down at the floor.

There were small marks near the leg of my chair, dark streaks left by shoes and wheels.

I followed one of them with my eyes.

It was easier than looking at her.

A little later, she asked me what time it was.

I checked the clock.

I told her.

She nodded and closed her eyes.

I wondered whether she was counting the hours until she could leave the hospital.

I wondered whether she was thinking about the baby.

I wondered whether the message had anything to do with the questions I couldn't bring myself to ask.

Then I caught myself again.

I had no evidence.

A phone notification was not a confession.

A tired expression was not proof of anything.

And a person who had just experienced a frightening delivery was allowed to be quiet without explaining every thought that crossed her mind.

I knew all of that.

I still felt uneasy.

Eventually, Clara fell asleep more deeply.

I stood and walked outside to stretch my legs.

The corridor had grown quieter.

A few people remained in the waiting area, speaking softly among themselves.

I passed the water dispenser and stopped beside a window.

The glass reflected my face.

I looked tired.

Older, somehow.

I wondered how Clara saw me.

Did she see someone who had stayed beside her when she needed him?

Or did she see someone she was afraid to speak honestly to?

That question stayed with me.

I couldn't decide which possibility frightened me more.

When I returned to the room, Clara was awake again.

She had turned slightly toward the table.

Her phone was in her hand.

I stopped near the door.

She looked up.

For one brief moment, neither of us moved.

Then she lowered the phone onto the blanket.

"Is everything okay?" I asked.

She nodded.

"Yes."

I waited for more.

Nothing came.

I walked to the chair and sat down.

I wanted to believe her answer.

I wanted to accept it without needing another sentence.

So I did.

At least, I said I did.

But as the night continued, I began to understand that trust wasn't simply the absence of questions.

Sometimes it was the willingness to ask one and accept the answer.

I hadn't reached that point yet.

I was still trying to protect the version of our life that existed before I noticed the phone.

I didn't know what the message meant.

I only knew that I was afraid to find out.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Questions I Kept Swallowing Became Harder to Ignore When Clara Started Watching Me Instead of the Door

I stayed until Clara fell asleep again.
