4 – The Screen Lit Up Beside Clara’s Bed, and One Small Moment Forced Me to Question Everything I Thought I Knew

By the time the room grew quiet again, I had almost convinced myself that I was being foolish.

Clara needed rest.

The doctors needed time to watch her condition.

The baby had arrived under frightening circumstances, and we were both trying to understand what came next.

There were enough reasons for worry without inventing more.

I repeated those thoughts until they began to sound like facts.

Then the phone lit up again.

I was looking toward the table when it happened.

The screen brightened beside the plastic cup.

A notification appeared.

I didn't move.

Clara was awake, but her eyes were closed.

I couldn't tell whether she had heard the small sound.

For a second, I thought about reaching over and placing the phone closer to her.

Then I stopped myself.

It wasn't my phone.

It wasn't my message.

I had no reason to read it.

I turned back toward Clara.

She opened her eyes.

Her gaze moved to the table.

Then it moved to me.

I recognized the expression on her face, although I couldn't have explained it at the time.

She looked caught between wanting to say something and hoping she wouldn't have to.

I felt a familiar tightness in my stomach.

"Do you need your phone?"

"No."

Again, the answer came quickly.

She swallowed and looked toward the window.

"I can get it for you."

"Please don't."

The words were quiet.

They were also clear.

I pulled my hand back, although I hadn't actually reached for anything.

"Okay."

I sat still.

Clara turned her face toward the pillow.

I looked at the door.

I looked at the monitor.

I looked at anything except the phone.

I wanted to respect her wishes.

I also wanted to understand why such a small offer had frightened her.

Those two feelings sat beside each other, neither one strong enough to silence the other.

A nurse entered to check Clara's condition.

I moved my chair back.

The nurse spoke to Clara, checked the equipment, and made a few notes.

Clara answered her questions in a low voice.

Everything appeared ordinary.

When the nurse finished, she reminded Clara to call if she needed help.

Then she left.

The door closed softly.

I returned to my chair.

Clara had turned her head toward the table again.

Her phone was still there.

I could see the edge of the screen from where I sat, but not the details of the notification.

I made no effort to read them.

I want to be clear about that.

I wasn't searching her belongings.

I wasn't trying to catch her in a lie.

At least, that wasn't what I thought I was doing.

I was sitting beside someone I loved, trying to understand why we seemed unable to speak honestly to each other.

I wanted her to tell me what was wrong.

I wanted her to trust me enough to say it without being asked.

And I was frightened that asking the question myself would change the answer.

Clara shifted beneath the blanket.

"Are you going to stay?"

The question startled me.

"Yes."

"For a while?"

"As long as you need."

She watched me for a moment.

Then she nodded and closed her eyes.

I felt ashamed of how much that brief exchange affected me.

She had asked me to stay.

I had promised that I would.

That should have been enough.

I moved my chair closer to the bed and took her hand again.

Her fingers rested loosely against mine.

I could feel her pulse when she shifted her wrist.

I concentrated on that small, real thing.

She was here.

I was here.

The doctors were watching her.

For now, I tried to let those facts be enough.

A little later, Clara fell asleep.

I remained beside her.

The room dimmed as the light outside changed.

I didn't know how much time passed.

I only knew that I had become tired enough to stop checking the clock.

Then I heard the phone vibrate against the table.

It was a small sound.

Nothing more than a brief buzz.

But Clara moved in her sleep.

Her hand tightened around mine.

I looked at her.

She didn't wake.

The phone's screen remained illuminated for a few seconds before fading.

I could have ignored it.

I should have ignored it.

Instead, I glanced toward the table.

I still couldn't make out the message.

I wasn't close enough to read it, and I didn't lean forward.

I turned away.

The decision should have settled the matter.

But the thought stayed with me.

Why had Clara reacted so strongly when I offered to hand her the phone?

Why had she asked whether Dr. Bennett had said anything about her?

Why did she keep watching the door as if she were waiting for someone to enter?

I had no answers.

I also had no proof that those moments meant anything beyond fear and exhaustion.

I knew that.

I reminded myself of it.

Then Clara stirred and opened her eyes.

She looked at me, then at the table.

This time, she reached for the phone herself.

Her movements were slow.

She picked it up and held it close to her chest.

The screen cast a faint light across her face.

I looked away to give her privacy.

I heard no sound from her.

No message being played.

No call being answered.

Only the soft movement of the blanket as she adjusted her position.

When I looked back, she had placed the phone face down beside the cup.

Her expression had changed.

Not dramatically.

She didn't cry or raise her voice.

She simply looked more awake than she had a moment earlier.

I wanted to ask what she had seen.

I didn't.

Clara looked at me.

For a second, I thought she was going to speak.

Her lips parted slightly.

Then she closed them again.

I waited.

She looked down at our hands.

"I'm tired."

"I know."

"Can we talk later?"

I felt something sink inside me.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Just the realization that I had been waiting for a conversation she wasn't ready to have.

I nodded.

"Of course."

She closed her eyes again.

I remained beside her, but I no longer felt as though I understood what was happening in the room.

The monitor continued its steady rhythm.

The phone lay face down on the table.

The plastic cup stood beside it.

Nothing had changed in any way another person could have noticed.

But I could no longer make myself believe that the silence between us was only about the difficult delivery.

I had no idea what the message said.

I had no idea who had sent it.

I didn't know whether it was important or whether I had allowed fear to turn an ordinary notification into something suspicious.

All I knew was that Clara had asked me not to touch her phone, and I had respected that request.

I also knew that she had looked at me as though she were afraid of what I might discover.

Those were two different things.

I tried to hold on to the first.

I couldn't forget the second.

For the rest of that visit, I stayed close to her and kept my questions to myself.

I told myself that she would speak when she was ready.

I told myself that I could wait until she felt stronger.

I told myself that love required patience, especially after a night like this one.

Perhaps it did.

But as I watched Clara sleep, I understood something I had been avoiding since Dr. Bennett first stopped me outside the room.

The delivery had brought us into the hospital.

It had not necessarily brought us to the truth.

And the message on that phone had become a question I could no longer pretend I hadn't seen.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: I Told Myself to Give Clara Time, but Every Quiet Moment Made Me Wonder What She
