3 – I Tried to Believe the Worst Was Behind Us, but the Silence Between Clara and Me Kept Growing

The first thing I learned about waiting beside a hospital bed was that time behaved differently there.

A minute could feel endless.

An hour could disappear while I watched Clara sleep.

I stayed in the chair beside her and tried to make myself useful.

When a nurse came in, I moved aside.

When Clara opened her eyes, I asked whether she needed anything.

When she said no, I accepted the answer.

I didn't want her to feel responsible for my fear.

She had enough to deal with already.

At least, that was what I told myself.

The truth was that I didn't know how to talk about what had happened.

Every time I tried to form a question, I imagined how tired she must be.

Every time I thought about telling her how frightened I had been, I worried that I would make her feel worse.

So I kept my words small.

I told her I was there.

I told her she could rest.

I told her we could talk later.

Later became the word I used whenever I didn't know what else to say.

Clara seemed grateful for the quiet.

Or perhaps she was simply too exhausted to ask for anything more.

I couldn't be certain.

A nurse brought her some water.

Clara took a few sips and returned the cup to the table.

Her eyes moved toward the phone again.

I noticed.

I tried not to show that I had noticed.

The phone remained where it was, close enough for her to reach but far enough that she would have to turn slightly to pick it up.

She didn't touch it.

Instead, she asked whether Dr. Bennett had said anything else.

I told her the doctor had explained the danger caused by her blood pressure and the need to deliver the baby quickly.

Clara listened without speaking.

Then she looked toward the window.

"Did she say anything about me?"

I wasn't sure what she meant.

"She said you needed rest."

Clara nodded.

That seemed to be the end of the conversation.

I wanted to ask why she had phrased the question that way.

I wanted to know whether there was something she had been waiting to hear from the doctor.

But she looked so tired that I let the moment pass.

I had no idea how many moments like that I would remember later.

At the time, each one seemed too small to matter.

A question without an explanation.

A glance toward the door.

A phone left untouched.

I treated them as separate things.

I didn't understand that sometimes a person reveals what is troubling them through the things they cannot bring themselves to say.

Clara eventually fell asleep again.

I sat beside her until my back began to ache.

Then I stood, stretched, and walked to the door.

I wanted to check whether there was anyone I could speak to about the baby.

I also wanted a few minutes outside the room to clear my head.

Before leaving, I looked at Clara.

Her hand rested near the edge of the blanket.

Her face had relaxed in sleep.

For the first time that night, she looked peaceful.

I didn't want to disturb her.

I stepped into the corridor and pulled the door almost closed behind me.

A nurse was standing at the nearby station.

I asked whether there had been any changes.

She told me the team was continuing to monitor Clara and that someone would update me if anything important happened.

I thanked her.

Then I stood there, unsure what to do next.

I could have called a family member.

I could have found a quieter place to sit.

Instead, I returned to the chair outside Clara's room.

I checked my own phone.

There were ordinary notifications and messages that could wait.

I read none of them carefully.

I was thinking about Clara.

I was thinking about the baby.

And I was thinking about the way she had looked at her phone.

I hated myself for that last thought.

A woman had just survived a frightening medical emergency.

She deserved comfort, not suspicion.

I knew how unfair it would be to turn her exhaustion into evidence of something else.

So I made myself stop.

I put my phone away and stared at the floor.

When I returned to the room, Clara was awake.

She looked at me as I came in.

"Where did you go?"

"Just outside."

She nodded.

I sat down again.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then Clara asked whether I had eaten anything.

The question surprised me.

I told her I was fine.

She gave me a tired look that reminded me of the way she used to react when I pretended a problem didn't exist.

"You should eat something."

"I will."

She didn't argue.

I wondered whether she had asked because she cared about me or because she needed something ordinary to talk about.

There was no way to know.

I wished I could make the room feel normal.

I wished we could talk about the future without having to think about what had happened only hours earlier.

But every ordinary sentence seemed to lead us back to the same silence.

I wanted to ask her whether she was afraid.

I wanted to tell her that I was.

Instead, I adjusted the chair and rested my arms on my knees.

Clara watched me.

"Are you all right?"

I almost laughed.

She was the one lying in a hospital bed.

She was the one whose blood pressure had become dangerous.

She was the one who had endured a delivery that required the doctors to act immediately.

And she was asking whether I was all right.

"I'm worried about you."

She looked down.

"I know."

There was something in the way she said it that made me stop.

Not because the words were strange.

Because she sounded as though she had been expecting them.

I searched her face.

She closed her eyes.

I let the conversation end.

For a long time, I listened to the monitor and the quiet movement of people outside the room.

The phone remained on the table.

Its screen lit briefly when a notification arrived.

Clara opened her eyes.

She turned toward it.

Then she looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

The screen went dark again.

I could have asked who had sent the message.

I could have asked whether she wanted to read it.

I could have reached for the phone and handed it to her.

Instead, I stayed where I was.

I told myself that she had a right to privacy.

She did.

I told myself that trust meant not questioning every little thing.

It did.

But trust also meant believing that the person beside you would tell you when something important was wrong.

I had never considered how difficult that belief could become when the person you loved seemed to be holding something back.

I looked away first.

Clara turned toward the pillow.

The silence returned.

And for the first time that night, I began to wonder whether the thing I was most afraid of wasn't losing her.

It was discovering that I had misunderstood something about her long before I ever entered that hospital.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Screen Lit Up Beside Clara’s Bed, and One Small Moment
