My bedroom isn't."

I let the words settle.

I wasn't going to add another explanation.

Not another apology.

Not another attempt to make my answer sound more pleasant.

I had spent enough of the morning explaining the obvious.

David sat quietly.

Sarah looked toward the clock again.

I could see that she still didn't like what I was saying.

But I didn't need her to like it.

I needed her to understand it.

There was a difference.

I walked toward the kitchen doorway.

Then I stopped.

"David."

He looked at me.

"I love you. That hasn't changed."

His expression softened slightly.

I continued.

"But the house is still mine, and I need you to remember that."

He didn't answer.

I hadn't expected an immediate apology.

I hadn't expected everything to be repaired in one conversation.

I simply needed to say what was true.

Then I left them at the kitchen table.

I walked down the hallway toward my bedroom.

For the first time that morning, I wasn't going there to consider packing my things.

I was going there because it was my room.

And I intended to keep it that way.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: As Eleven O’Clock Drew Closer, I Realized the Real Choice Was Never About Bedrooms but About What I Would Allow in My Home

The house grew quiet after I finished speaking.
