I don't think you do."

I let her finish.

"I need room for my clothes, and I need somewhere comfortable to work."

I understood both concerns.

I wasn't pretending that her needs didn't exist.

But there was a difference between needing more space and being entitled to take someone else's.

I had learned that long before I became a mother.

I wondered why I now had to teach it to two adults.

"Sarah, I understand you would prefer a bigger room."

She interrupted.

"It's not about preference."

"Then why wasn't this discussed before you moved in?"

She looked at David.

He looked at me.

I waited.

Neither answered.

That silence was different from the earlier ones.

It felt less like shock and more like inconvenience.

I had asked a question they couldn't easily dismiss.

When David called me about the rent increase, he hadn't said the guest room would be a problem.

He hadn't asked whether Sarah could have the largest bedroom.

He hadn't mentioned needing to rearrange my living situation.

They had needed somewhere to stay.

I had offered somewhere.

They had accepted.

Now they wanted to change everything after settling in.

I couldn't know whether they had planned it beforehand.

I wasn't going to accuse them of that without evidence.

But the timing bothered me.

Three days.

It kept coming back to me.

I had barely adjusted to having them in the house.

And already they were telling me my bedroom should be theirs.

"Mom, you're acting like we're strangers."

David sounded hurt.

I looked at him.

"No. I'm acting like this is my home."

"We're family."

"I know."

"Then why are you being so difficult?"

There it was again.

The idea that family meant I should agree.

I felt tired.

Not physically.

It was the kind of tiredness that comes when someone keeps asking you to justify an obvious truth.

I didn't want to fight with my son.

I didn't want to spend the morning arguing with his wife.

I had invited them into my home because I cared about their future.

I wanted them to save money.

I wanted them to find a place where they could live comfortably.

But I couldn't make those things happen by surrendering my own comfort indefinitely.

There had to be a limit.

And the limit had arrived sooner than I expected.

"David, I gave you a place to stay without charging rent."

"I know that."

"Then please stop talking to me as though I'm refusing to help you."

He looked uncomfortable.

For a moment, I thought he understood.

Then Sarah spoke.

"We're not asking you to leave the house."

I looked at her.

"No. You're asking me to leave my bedroom."

She pressed her lips together.

"It's one room."

One room.

I repeated those words silently.

To Sarah, it was a larger space and a better closet.

To me, it was the bedroom my husband and I had shared.

It was where I had slept for twenty years.

It was where my belongings belonged.

And even if it had meant nothing sentimental to me, I still had the right to keep it.

I didn't need to prove its importance.

The room was mine.

That should have been sufficient.

I walked toward the kitchen table.

I pulled out a chair and sat down.

My legs weren't weak.

I simply didn't want to remain standing while two people tried to wear me down.

Sarah watched me.

David stayed near the doorway.

I looked at the clock again.

The hands had moved.

I realized that every minute we spent arguing was a minute I could have spent enjoying an ordinary morning in my home.

That bothered me more than I expected.

I had lost enough ordinary mornings after my husband's death.

I knew how valuable peaceful routines could be.

I didn't want to spend the rest of my life defending them from people I was trying to help.

"Sit down, David."

He frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I want to speak to you as your mother, not argue with you across the kitchen."

He hesitated.

Then sat opposite me.

Sarah remained standing.

I looked at my son.

"When you called me, you told me you needed time to save."

He nodded.

"And I said you could stay here."

"Yes."

"Did I charge you rent?"

"No."

"Did I ask you to pay me for the room?"

"No."

"Then why do you think you can tell me where I'm allowed to sleep?"

He rubbed his hands together.

"I don't think that."

I leaned forward slightly.

"Then tell me what you do think."

He looked toward Sarah.

She crossed her arms.

I waited.

I wasn't going to speak for him.

I had done enough of that over the years.

When David was younger, I could often tell what he needed before he found the words.

I had considered it part of knowing my child.

But sometimes I had made it too easy for him not to say difficult things.

Now he needed to speak for himself.

"Sarah isn't happy with the space."

I nodded.

"I understand."

"And I want her to be comfortable."

"I understand that too."

He looked relieved.

Then I continued.

"But you haven't told me why her comfort requires taking something away from me."

His expression changed.

That was the question he had been avoiding.

He could explain the closet.

He could explain the work arrangements.

He could explain why Sarah preferred my room.

But he couldn't explain why I was obligated to surrender it.

At least, not without admitting what he expected.

He expected me to be the one who gave way.

Because I was his mother.

Because I had always tried to help.

Because I usually placed his comfort ahead of my own.

I sat back.

I felt sad for both of us.

I had wanted him to become a considerate adult.

Yet here we were, discussing a basic courtesy as though it were unreasonable.

Sarah finally pulled out a chair.

She sat beside David.

"I think this is getting personal."

I looked at her.

"It became personal when you told me to empty my bedroom."

She looked away.

I didn't raise my voice.

I didn't need to.

The facts were simple.

The house belonged to me.

The guest room had been offered.

The master bedroom had not.

And neither David nor Sarah had the authority to change that arrangement without my agreement.

That was the one thing they had overlooked.

They could decide what they wanted.

They couldn't decide what I had consented to give.

I looked at David.

"I am willing to help you both. But I won't be ordered out of my own room."

He stared at the table.

Sarah looked toward the clock once more.

The deadline she had chosen was still approaching.

But I had stopped treating it as something I needed to satisfy.

The decision was no longer about how quickly I could pack my belongings.

It was about whether David and Sarah could accept the help I had actually offered.

And I knew I couldn't answer that question for them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Asked David One Simple Question About the Guest Room, and His Answer Made Me See Our Arrangement in a Different Light

After I told them I wouldn't surrender my bedroom, I expected the conversation to end.
