10 – I Agreed to Hear My Son Out, but I Was No Longer Willing to Let Another Family Conversation End Without Answers

Kenneth replied later that evening.

He said we could talk the following day.

He did not suggest a particular place.

He did not explain what he wanted to discuss.

I asked him where he wanted to meet.

He said we could speak by phone first and decide from there.

I agreed.

It was not the meeting I had imagined, but I was willing to begin somewhere.

After I put the phone down, I returned to the kitchen.

The paper with my questions was still beside the property folder.

I read the questions again.

Why had he sent the message?

Who had agreed with him?

What did he want from me now?

The questions looked simple on paper.

In my head, they were tied to years of memories.

I remembered Kenneth as a child, bringing me little problems he believed only I could solve.

I remembered the way he used to stand in the kitchen while I prepared dinner.

Sometimes he would tell me everything that had happened at school before I had finished chopping vegetables.

Other times, he would sit quietly until I asked what was wrong.

I had learned to recognize his silences.

Or I had thought I had.

The man calling me now was still my son, but he had become someone whose reasons I could no longer predict.

That realization hurt more than I expected.

I went to bed early.

The next morning, I made coffee and waited until a reasonable hour before calling him.

He answered on the second ring.

"Morning, Mom."

"Good morning."

He asked whether I had slept well.

I told him I had.

We spoke briefly about ordinary things.

The weather.

The day ahead.

Nothing important.

For a few seconds, I felt relieved.

It sounded like one of our old conversations, before every sentence became something that needed to be examined for hidden meaning.

Then Kenneth changed the subject.

He said the family wanted things to return to normal.

I looked down at my cup.

"Normal for whom?" I asked.

He did not answer immediately.

He said he did not want another argument.

I told him neither did I.

"But I don't know how we're supposed to move forward when nobody will explain what happened."

He said he understood.

I waited for him to say more.

Instead, he asked whether I had considered what the rest of the family was going through.

I felt my shoulders tighten.

I had considered it.

I had considered it so often that I had barely allowed myself to think about what I was going through.

"I have," I said. "Have you considered what that message did to me?"

He became quiet.

Then he said he had not intended to hurt me.

I wanted to believe him.

But intention could not erase the words he had chosen.

"You told me not to come to Christmas," I said. "You said the family had decided to cut ties with me."

He said things had become complicated.

I closed my eyes briefly.

There it was again.

I took a breath.

"I need you to tell me what was so important that you decided to say that."

He did not answer.

The silence stretched between us.

I could hear faint background noise on his end.

Then he said he was trying to find the right way to explain it.

I told him I would listen when he was ready.

He asked whether I was still willing to meet.

I said I was.

We agreed to speak again later that day.

When the call ended, I remained seated.

I felt disappointed, but not surprised.

I had hoped that agreeing to talk would make it easier for him to speak plainly.

Instead, we had reached the same point again.

I could not drag an explanation out of him.

I could only decide how long I was willing to wait before making my own choices.

I spent the next few hours doing household chores.

I washed the coffee cup.

I wiped the counter.

I folded the small piece of paper with my questions and put it in the folder.

Then I checked the property documents once more.

I wanted to be certain that I understood what I owned and what responsibilities came with it.

I had always tried to be fair.

I wanted to remain fair now.

Kenneth's behavior had hurt me, but that did not give me permission to act carelessly.

The house was not merely an idea in an argument.

It was a real property, and the arrangement surrounding it affected real people.

I needed to consider it with a clear head.

That afternoon, I reviewed my notes from the earlier conversation about the property.

I made sure I had not confused what I knew with what I merely suspected.

I knew that I owned the house.

I knew that Kenneth lived there.

I knew there was an existing arrangement.

I knew I had options worth understanding before making a decision.

I did not know what Kenneth expected me to do.

I did not know why he had been so reluctant to explain himself.

And I did not know whether the rest of the family understood the full situation.

I refused to fill those gaps with guesses.

When Kenneth called again, I answered.

He asked whether I was available to speak.

I told him I was.

He began by saying that he hoped we could put the disagreement behind us.

I asked whether he was ready to explain what had happened.

He said he was trying.

I listened as he spoke about family tension and the difficulty of keeping everyone satisfied.

He said people had been upset with one another.

He said the holidays had made everything more stressful.

He said he wanted the family to stop arguing.

I let him finish.

Then I asked him one question.

"Why was cutting me off the solution?"

He fell silent.

I could feel my own heartbeat.

I had not raised my voice.

I had not accused him of being a bad son.

I had asked him to explain his own decision.

Finally, he said he did not know how to answer that.

It was the most honest thing he had said during either call.

I felt the anger inside me soften slightly.

Not disappear.

Soften.

I told him that I was willing to hear the rest whenever he could explain it.

He said he appreciated that.

We ended the call without resolving anything.

But I did not feel as though I had failed.

I had asked a direct question.

I had received an incomplete answer.

I had not rushed to fill the silence with excuses for him.

That was progress, even if it was not the progress I had hoped for.

I placed the phone beside the folder.

The two objects sat next to each other on the table.

One represented the relationship I wanted to repair.

The other represented a responsibility I could no longer ignore.

I knew I would have to think about both.

That evening, I prepared dinner and ate quietly.

I did not open the family chat.

I did not call another relative to ask what they knew.

I wanted Kenneth to have the chance to speak for himself.

But I also wanted to protect myself from the habit of waiting forever for someone else to decide when I deserved an answer.

Before bed, I checked my phone one last time.

There was a message from Kenneth.

He said he wanted to talk again soon.

I read it, then set the phone down.

I was willing to give him that chance.

I was not willing to surrender my judgment in exchange for it.

Click here to continue reading: PART
