I asked.

He did not answer directly.

Instead, he said we needed to find a way forward.

I looked at the empty chair across from me.

I had spent years accepting that kind of answer because I wanted the conversation to continue.

This time, I needed more than a promise to discuss things later.

"I want to understand what you want from me," I said.

He sighed.

"Mom, can we please talk about this in person?"

I considered it.

I was willing to sit down with him.

I was willing to hear whatever he had to say.

But I was not willing to pretend that meeting would solve anything by itself.

"Yes," I said. "We can talk when we're both ready to be honest."

He agreed quickly.

Then he asked whether I could meet soon.

I told him I would think about it.

He seemed disappointed by that answer.

I could hear it in the brief pause before he said goodbye.

When the call ended, I remained at the table.

I had wanted an apology.

I had wanted an explanation.

Instead, I had received another request to meet, wrapped in careful words.

Still, the call had been different.

For the first time, Kenneth had asked to speak without immediately accusing me of making things difficult.

It was not much.

But I was willing to acknowledge it.

I did not want anger to make me incapable of recognizing a genuine change if one appeared.

I also did not want hope to make me accept less than honesty.

That afternoon, I thought carefully about whether I should agree to meet him.

I considered the questions I needed answered.

Why had he sent the message?

Who had been involved in the family discussion?

What did he expect me to do now?

I did not need a perfect conversation.

I needed a real one.

I wrote the questions on a small piece of paper and placed it beside the property folder.

Then I sat back and looked at them.

The paper seemed almost ridiculous.

This was my son.

I should not have needed written questions to speak with him.

But the relationship had reached a point where I no longer trusted myself to stay focused once he began talking.

I knew how easily I could be drawn into reassuring him.

I knew how quickly I could forget what I had intended to ask.

The paper was not a weapon.

It was a reminder.

I wanted to hear him without abandoning myself.

Later that evening, I checked the family chat.

There were several new messages.

Someone suggested that we should all sit down together.

Someone else said it was time to stop blaming one another.

I read the messages carefully.

Nobody had addressed the original decision.

Nobody had explained why I had been excluded.

I closed the chat.

I would not agree to a group conversation merely because everyone wanted the discomfort to end.

If Kenneth had something to say, he could begin by speaking to me.

I was not asking him to choose between me and the rest of the family.

I was asking him to acknowledge that he had spoken to his mother in a way that had hurt her.

That evening, I prepared a simple dinner.

I ate at the table and left the phone nearby.

It remained quiet for a while.

Then a new message appeared from Kenneth.

He asked whether we could meet the following day.

I read it twice.

For several seconds, I considered saying yes immediately.

Then I looked at the paper beside the property folder.

I thought about the questions I had written down.

I thought about the house.

And I thought about the fact that I still did not know why my son had suddenly decided that I should no longer be part of the family.

I typed a brief reply.

I told him I was willing to meet, provided we could speak openly about what had happened.

Then I sent it.

For the first time in several days, I had agreed to take a step toward him without promising to make everything right by myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Agreed to Hear My Son Out, but I Was No Longer Willing to Let Another Family Conversation End Without Answers

The next morning, I left my phone on the kitchen table while I made breakfast.
