8 – When the Calls Continued, I Realized the Family Was Waiting for Me to Fix Something They Had Never Explained

By the following morning, the calls had become difficult to ignore.

I had missed several while I was asleep.

More appeared as I made breakfast.

The screen filled with names I knew by heart.

Kenneth.

Other relatives.

People who had shared Christmas dinners with me for years.

I counted the missed calls once, then stopped.

The number did not tell me what anyone wanted.

It only told me that they were trying very hard to reach me.

I made toast and sat at the table.

For a moment, I considered turning the phone off.

I did not.

I wanted to remain reachable if someone had something important to say.

But I was no longer going to treat every ring as an emergency.

I ate breakfast slowly.

Then I opened the family chat.

There were more messages about talking things through.

Someone said the situation had gone too far.

Another asked why I was making everyone worry.

I stared at that sentence.

Making everyone worry.

I had not told anyone to worry.

I had not threatened to disappear.

I had not made a public accusation.

I had simply stopped trying to force a conversation with people who had shown no interest in hearing my side.

I began typing a reply.

I wrote that I had received Kenneth's message and was waiting for someone to explain it.

I read the sentence.

Then I deleted it.

I had already asked for an explanation.

Repeating the question in the group chat would not make anyone more willing to answer.

I put the phone down and finished my tea.

After breakfast, I went to the cabinet and checked the property folder again.

I wanted to be certain that I had not overlooked anything.

I reviewed the documents carefully.

The arrangement concerning Kenneth's home was real.

My ownership was real.

And whatever happened next needed to be handled with care.

I was not going to use a house as a weapon.

I was not going to make a decision merely because I wanted my son to feel the pain I had felt.

But I was also not going to ignore the arrangement simply because thinking about it made me uncomfortable.

The family had changed the terms of our relationship without speaking to me.

That had forced me to reconsider what I was willing to continue doing.

I put the documents away.

Then I called the person I had spoken with about the property earlier.

I wanted to clarify a few points.

I asked questions and listened to the answers.

I made notes beside the folder's label, keeping them separate from the official papers.

I did not rush.

When the call ended, I felt calmer.

I still did not know what I would ultimately decide.

I knew only that I had taken the first step toward understanding the situation instead of allowing fear to keep me from looking at it.

My phone rang again.

Kenneth.

I let it ring twice before answering.

"Hello."

"Mom, where have you been?"

"At home."

"You haven't been answering anyone."

"I have answered some calls."

"Not mine."

I waited.

He seemed to expect me to apologize.

I did not.

"Is there something you need to tell me?" I asked.

He said we needed to meet.

I asked what we needed to discuss.

He repeated that the family was worried.

I told him I understood that.

Then I asked why.

He went quiet.

I could hear him breathing into the phone.

Finally, he said there were things that needed to be settled between us.

"Which things?"

He said I knew what he meant.

I told him I did not.

It was the truth.

I knew about the message.

I knew about the house.

I knew that he had been calling repeatedly.

But I did not know what he wanted to ask of me, and I would not pretend otherwise.

"Mom, this is getting ridiculous."

I felt the old instinct rise in me.

I wanted to soothe him.

I wanted to say that I was sorry the conversation had become difficult.

I wanted to promise that we could work everything out.

For years, those words had come easily.

This time, I stopped myself.

"Then let's make it simple," I said. "Tell me what you need."

He did not answer.

I waited a little longer.

Then I said that I had to go and ended the call.

I sat very still after that.

There was a sadness in refusing to rescue a conversation.

Even when the conversation was unfair, it was still a conversation with my son.

I could not make myself stop caring about him.

I could not erase the years when he had been a child and I had been the person he came to when he was frightened.

Those memories remained part of me.

But they could not be the only thing I considered when deciding how to respond to the man he had become.

I put the phone on the table.

Another message appeared.

This one was from a relative who asked me to please call Kenneth because he was under a lot of pressure.

I read it slowly.

I wondered whether Kenneth had told them what he wanted from me.

I wondered whether they knew something I did not.

I considered asking.

Then I decided against it.

If there was something important to discuss, Kenneth could tell me himself.

I was done collecting fragments of a conversation that everyone else seemed to be having without me.

The afternoon passed quietly.

I watered the plants and cleaned the kitchen.

When I opened the refrigerator, I saw the container I had used for my neighbor's soup.

I took it out, washed it, and placed it on the shelf to dry.

The small task reminded me of the Thursday afternoon when everything had begun.

I had been making soup for someone who was ill.

I had been thinking about an ordinary kindness.

Then my son had sent a message that changed the way I understood my family.

I had spent the days afterward wondering what I had done wrong.

Now I was beginning to ask a different question.

Why had I assumed that I must have done something wrong simply because someone had treated me badly?

The answer was not comfortable.

I had grown accustomed to being the person who repaired things.

When a relationship became strained, I searched for my mistake.

When someone became distant, I wondered what I should have done differently.

I had made self-blame into a habit because it gave me the illusion that I could prevent rejection if I behaved correctly enough.

But Kenneth's message had shown me that I could follow every rule I had made for myself and still be excluded.

I could not control what he decided.

I could not control what the other relatives accepted.

I could only control whether I kept sacrificing my own judgment to make their decisions easier for them.

That evening, I sat at the kitchen table with my phone beside me.

The calls had slowed, but they had not stopped.

I did not count them again.

I had begun to understand that the number mattered less than the reason behind them.

If my family wanted a real conversation, I would listen.

If Kenneth wanted to explain himself, I would give him the opportunity.

But I would not agree to something merely because he sounded impatient.

I would not abandon my questions because someone else was uncomfortable answering them.

And I would not pretend that the house had nothing to do with the situation simply because discussing it might lead to difficult decisions.

The property had been part of my life long before this disagreement.

My ownership was not something that had appeared in anger.

It was a fact that had existed all along.

Kenneth had lived with that fact, whether he thought about it or not.

Now I needed to decide what the arrangement meant in the circumstances we actually faced, rather than the circumstances I had hoped we would always have.

I closed the cabinet and returned to the table.

My phone vibrated once more.

I looked at the screen.

Another missed call.

Another message waiting.

I did not feel the same urge to reach for it immediately.

I had finally stopped believing that the loudest person in a family was automatically the person whose needs mattered most.

I still wanted to hear from Kenneth.

I still wanted an explanation.

I still hoped that someday we could sit together without either of us feeling the need to win.

But I could not create that future by pretending the present was acceptable.

I turned off the kitchen light and left the phone on the table.

Tomorrow, I would decide how to handle the next conversation.

Tonight, I was going to let myself rest.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9:
