What is going on?"

He paused.

I could hear movement on his end, as though he were walking from one room to another.

"There's been a lot of confusion."

"About what?"

"Everything."

I looked at the clock.

I had other things to do that morning, and I did not want another conversation in which I had to guess what he meant.

"Then let's talk about one thing at a time."

He sighed.

"Mom, you know this family has been under pressure."

I did not know that.

At least, nobody had told me.

I waited for him to continue.

He began talking about how difficult family relationships could become.

He said people sometimes needed distance.

He said everyone had their own concerns.

He said the holiday season was already stressful.

None of those statements explained why he had announced that the family was cutting ties with me.

I let him finish.

Then I asked the question I had been carrying since Thursday afternoon.

"Why did you tell me I wasn't welcome at Christmas?"

The line went quiet.

For several seconds, I heard nothing but faint background noise.

Then Kenneth said that the family had discussed it.

I already knew that.

I wanted to know why.

He told me there were things I needed to understand.

I asked him to explain them.

He did not.

Instead, he returned to the subject of my silence.

He said my refusal to respond had made the situation more difficult.

I looked down at my hands.

I was beginning to recognize the pattern.

He had made a decision without consulting me.

When I did not react the way he expected, he wanted me to explain myself.

When I asked him to explain his decision, he changed the subject.

I had spent years trying to make conversations like that work.

I would ask a question, receive an incomplete answer, and then offer a compromise before the other person had even explained the problem.

That morning, I decided not to do it.

"Kenneth, I am willing to listen to you," I said. "But I need you to speak to me honestly."

"I am being honest."

"Then tell me why you sent that message."

Another pause.

Finally, he said he did not want to argue about it over the phone.

I told him we did not have to argue.

We could simply talk.

He said the family had made its decision.

I asked whether that decision had changed.

He did not answer directly.

Instead, he said we needed to deal with the situation at hand.

Again, the situation at hand.

I felt the same uneasiness I had felt during the previous call.

Something was being left unsaid.

I could hear it in the way he avoided specific questions.

I did not know what the missing information was.

I was not going to invent an answer.

But I knew that if I agreed to meet him without knowing what he wanted, I might find myself in another conversation where everyone else understood the purpose except me.

"I won't make any decisions while I am confused about what you're asking," I said.

His voice hardened.

"You're making this personal."

I looked at the property folder on the table.

It was personal.

He was my son.

The message had been sent to a family group that included people I loved.

But the house was also a real matter that needed to be handled responsibly.

I was not going to pretend that the arrangement could be separated from every other part of our lives.

"I think it became personal when you told me I was no longer welcome in the family," I replied.

He said nothing.

I waited.

For a moment, I thought he might apologize.

Instead, he told me we would speak later.

Then he ended the call.

I sat there holding the phone.

I had wanted an explanation.

I had received another postponement.

I put the phone down and looked at the folder.

I did not feel triumphant.

I felt tired.

There was no satisfaction in realizing that my son was unwilling to answer a simple question.

I wanted him to be able to speak to me without turning every disagreement into a contest.

I wanted us to remember that we were family.

But wanting those things did not mean I could make them happen alone.

I returned the folder to the cabinet.

The rest of the day passed without another meaningful conversation.

A relative sent a message saying everyone was upset.

I read it but did not respond.

Another asked whether I was planning to attend any family gathering soon.

I did not answer that either.

I was not going to pretend that the Christmas invitation was the only issue.

Kenneth had used the language of a collective decision.

The family had allowed it to stand.

If they wanted to change the situation, someone would need to speak plainly about what had happened.

That evening, I sat beside the kitchen window with a cup of tea.

The phone remained silent for nearly an hour.

I was grateful for the quiet.

Then it began vibrating again.

A new message appeared from Kenneth.

He wanted to know when we could meet.

I looked at it for a long time.

This time, I did not feel compelled to answer immediately.

I would meet him when I was ready to have a real conversation.

Not because he had demanded one.

Not because the family had suddenly become impatient.

And certainly not because I was afraid that silence would cost me whatever place I had left in their lives.

I put the phone down.

For the first time, I could admit to myself that I had been trying to save a relationship without knowing whether the other person was willing to help save it.

I still hoped Kenneth would come around.

But hope was no longer going to make my decisions for me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The More My Relatives Asked Me to Talk, the More I Wondered Why None of Them Had Asked Kenneth to Explain Himself First

The following morning, my phone was already ringing before I had finished breakfast.
