I've been reading them.”

“Good. It doesn't tell me why.”

“Why are you doing this to him?”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“I am not doing anything to him. I'm asking what I'm being asked to give up.”

“You're acting as if the family is trying to cheat you.”

“I haven't said that.”

“You don't have to say it. It's obvious.”

“Then tell me what the documents mean.”

He did not.

Instead, he said the adviser would make things more complicated than necessary.

I told him that I had hired someone precisely because I did not understand every part of the agreement.

“Dad has been doing this for years,” Raymond said.

“That doesn't answer my question.”

“He knows what he's doing.”

“I hope he does.”

Raymond sounded offended by the answer.

I did not intend it as an insult.

I meant that a person could be experienced and still be expected to explain a decision that affected someone else.

“I don't know what you want me to say,” he said.

“I want you to tell me why my shares are needed.”

“I've told you.”

“No. You've told me the company needs a clear structure. You haven't told me why that requires me to transfer my ownership.”

He breathed out slowly.

“You are making yourself an outsider.”

The words hurt more than I wanted them to.

For a moment, I was back in my parents' house, sitting at the edge of a conversation that everyone else seemed to understand.

Then I looked at Kirk, who was lying on his blanket and moving his fingers.

“I am still your sister,” I said. “I am also the person being asked to sign the agreement.”

Raymond did not respond.

“I need an answer, not another warning about how I look.”

“I have to go.”

“All right.”

The call ended.

I set the phone down without throwing it or calling him back.

The old instinct was still there.

I wanted to explain myself until he stopped being angry.

I wanted to tell him that I was not trying to hurt our father.

I wanted to remind him that I had never demanded anything from the company.

But none of those explanations would answer the question.

I returned to the papers.

I marked another page for my adviser.

Then I wrote a short list of what I knew and what I did not know.

I knew the proposed transfer would remove my ownership interest.

I knew my father wanted it completed quickly.

I knew Raymond supported him.

I did not know why my twelve percent was necessary.

I did not know what the company intended to do next.

I did not know whether there were documents I had not been shown.

I left the final line blank rather than inventing an answer.

That evening, Kirk's father found me sitting at the table with the papers arranged in front of me.

He placed a cup of tea beside my notebook.

“Still working through it?”

“Yes.”

“Any clearer?”

“Clearer about what I don't know.”

He pulled out the chair opposite me.

“That sounds like progress.”

I smiled faintly.

I told him about Raymond's call.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he did not tell me Raymond was a bad brother or that my father had some secret plan.

He simply asked, “What do you need before you can make a decision?”

I looked at the list.

“An explanation of why the transfer is necessary. Because I'm a mother now. Because this shouldn't be so difficult.”

He glanced toward Kirk.

“Being responsible doesn't mean knowing every answer before you ask the question.”

I looked down at my notes.

I had spent so much time trying to appear reasonable that I had almost forgotten the purpose of being reasonable.

It was not to make every person around me comfortable.

It was to make decisions with care.

I closed the folder and put the notebook on top.

I was not ready to sign.

I was not ready to accuse anyone.

I was ready to continue asking.

That was enough for one day.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: My Father Invited Me Back to the House Where I Had Learned Not to Question Him

The next morning, I took the folder out of the drawer before I made breakfast.
