12 – The Appointment Was Meant to Help Me Understand Twelve Percent, but It Also Forced Me to Admit How Little My Family Had Ever Let Me Know

I almost canceled the consultation.

The thought came to me the night before, while I was sitting beside Kirk's bassinet with the folder on my lap.

I was tired.

I had been sleeping in short stretches, and even simple tasks sometimes felt larger than they should.

The idea of discussing legal documents with someone I had never met seemed exhausting.

I could postpone it.

I could tell myself that I needed more time.

I could wait until my father calmed down.

That was what I had done for years.

Whenever a conversation became uncomfortable, I waited for someone else to decide that the problem had passed.

Sometimes it did.

Usually, the problem returned in a different form.

I looked at the folder.

The unsigned pages were still inside.

I thought about my father's deadline and my mother's warning.

I thought about Raymond telling me that the transfer would make things easier for everyone.

Then I remembered the question I had written on the folded sheet of paper.

What happens if I refuse?

None of them had answered it.

I was not going to cancel.

The next morning, I prepared the documents and checked that I had included the list of questions.

I did not know exactly what to expect from the consultation.

I only knew that I needed someone to explain the terms without treating my father's wishes as the final answer.

Kirk's father offered to accompany me.

I appreciated the offer.

But I wanted to be able to explain the situation in my own words first.

“I may ask you to come with me another time,” I told him. “For now, I want to understand what I am dealing with.”

He nodded.

“Then take your time.”

I left the folder in my bag until the appointment began.

When the consultation started, I explained the basic situation.

I told the adviser that I owned a twelve percent interest in Pembroke Development Group and that my father wanted me to transfer it.

I explained that the documents had been prepared through the company and that I had been pressured to sign them before leaving the hospital.

I described the deadline.

I described the messages.

I made a point of distinguishing what I knew from what I suspected.

I did not claim that my father was trying to steal anything.

I did not claim that the company was in trouble.

I said that I did not understand why the transfer was necessary, and I wanted to know what it would mean for me.

The adviser reviewed the documents.

I waited while the pages were examined.

The room was quiet.

I could hear the faint sound of traffic outside.

My hands rested on the edge of the table.

I had brought a pen, but I kept it capped.

I was not there to sign.

I was there to understand.

The first questions concerned the nature of my ownership interest and the effect of the proposed transfer.

The adviser explained that the documents needed to be considered carefully and that I should not sign until I understood the terms and their consequences.

I nodded.

That was what I had wanted from the beginning.

Not a promise that everything would be fine.

Not a declaration that my father was wrong about every business matter.

Just a clear explanation of what I was being asked to do.

We went through the pages one by one.

Whenever I did not understand a phrase, I asked.

Sometimes the answer was simple.

Sometimes it required looking at another section of the documents.

I wrote notes in the margins of my own question sheet.

The process took longer than I expected.

But I felt better with every question I asked.

I was no longer trying to prove that I belonged in the conversation.

I was participating in it.

Eventually, we returned to the section describing the transfer as voluntary.

I pointed to the wording.

“What does that mean in this context?”

The adviser explained the significance of the statement and why it was important that I understand what I was agreeing to before signing.

I looked at the page.

The word had bothered me from the moment I first read it.

Now I understood why I had been right to pause.

I had not requested the transfer.

I had not been given enough information to make an informed decision.

And I had been told that my refusal would damage my relationship with my family.

I did not need to decide whether those actions were part of a larger plan.

I only needed to recognize that I had every reason to proceed carefully.

I turned to the next question on my list.

“What happens if I refuse to transfer my shares?”

The adviser explained that the answer depended on the company's governing documents, the nature of my ownership interest, and any applicable agreements.

There was no single answer that could be given without reviewing the relevant material.

That was not as satisfying as I had hoped.

But it was honest.

I wrote down what additional information I needed.

Then I asked why my father might be insisting on a transfer at this particular time.

The adviser could not know my father's motives from the documents alone.

That answer disappointed me.

I had hoped the papers would reveal everything.

They did not.

The documents could tell me what I was being asked to sign.

They could help identify the rights affected by the proposed transfer.

They could not tell me exactly what my father feared or why he had chosen that moment to pressure me.

I had to separate the questions.

What did the documents do?

What rights did I have?

What was my father trying to accomplish?

The first two could be examined through the paperwork and relevant agreements.

The third required information I did not yet possess.

I was learning to accept that uncertainty without filling it with guesses.

When the consultation ended, I gathered my notes.

The folder felt heavier than when I had arrived.

Not because the papers had changed.

Because I understood more clearly what they represented.

I had been asked to make a significant decision without the information I needed.

I had been pressured to act quickly.

And the people urging me to sign had treated my questions as a personal betrayal.

I left with a clearer understanding of the next steps, but I did not have every answer.

I would need to review the relevant company documents.

I would need to understand the terms of my ownership.

And I would need to make sure that any decision I made was informed and voluntary.

I was not going to pretend that one appointment had solved everything.

But it had given me something I had been missing.

A way to proceed that did not depend on my father's approval.

When I returned home, Kirk's father asked how it had gone.

I set the folder on the table and took a seat.

“Better than I expected.”

“Did you get answers?”

“Some.”

I explained what I had learned.

I told him which questions remained unresolved and what information I needed next.

He listened without trying to complete my sentences.

When I finished, he asked, “What do you want to do now?”

I looked at the papers.

“I want to review the remaining information before I decide anything.”

He nodded.

“Then that is the next step.”

I felt a small smile appear.

For years, I had expected someone to tell me what the next step should be.

Now I could identify it myself.

That evening, I called Raymond.

I had not planned to.

But after the consultation, I wanted to give him another opportunity to explain the company's position.

He answered after several rings.

“What is it?”

“I have had the transfer documents reviewed.”

He became quiet.

“By whom?”

“An independent adviser.”

I could hear his breathing change.

“Dad is not going to like that.”

“That is not what I called to discuss.”

“What do you want?”

“I want the relevant information about my ownership interest and the reason the transfer is being requested.”

He sighed.

“We have already discussed this.”

“No, Raymond. We have discussed whether I should obey. We have not discussed why.”

He did not respond.

I continued.

“I am willing to review the information. I am willing to listen to a proper explanation. But I am not signing those papers simply because Dad expects me to.”

Raymond's voice hardened.

“You are making yourself an outsider.”

I looked toward Kirk.

“I am asking to understand something that belongs to me.”

“That is not how family businesses work.”

“Then perhaps someone should explain how they work.”

He ended the call.

I sat quietly with the phone in my hand.

His response hurt.

I had hoped the consultation would make the conversation easier.

Instead, it had made the difference between us more obvious.

I was asking for information.

He was asking for compliance.

Those were not the same request.

I placed the phone on the table.

Then I opened the folder and wrote down the additional information I needed.

I did not know what the company documents would show.

I did not know whether my father would eventually provide a clear explanation.

I did not know how much damage the dispute would do to my relationship with Raymond.

But I had stopped treating those uncertainties as reasons to surrender.

I looked at the final question on my list.

What happens if I refuse?

I still did not have the complete answer.

But I knew what I would do until I found it.

I would keep asking.

I would keep learning.

And I would not sign away my twelve percent merely to make the people around me comfortable.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: My Father Finally Sent the Documents I Had Asked For, but the Answers I Needed Were Still Missing

I almost canceled the consultation.
