I want to speak to you properly.”

I looked at Kirk, who was resting against my shoulder.

“Then speak.”

Raymond took a breath.

“I know you are upset.”

“I am not sure you understand why.”

“I understand that you feel Dad is putting pressure on you.”

“He is putting pressure on me.”

“That is not what I meant.”

I waited.

He had always been able to turn a simple conversation into a maze of explanations.

I was no longer interested in following him through it.

“What do you want, Raymond?”

He hesitated.

“I want you to understand that the company is in a difficult position.”

I looked at the folder on the table.

“Then tell me what the position is.”

“It is complicated.”

“I know. That is why I want independent advice.”

He sighed.

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“Take a disagreement and turn it into a question of trust.”

I shifted Kirk into a more comfortable position.

“Raymond, you are asking me to transfer twelve percent of a company. If you want my trust, explain why.”

He was silent for several seconds.

Then he said, “Your shares are important.”

I sat still.

That was the first time either of my parents or Raymond had admitted it so directly.

“Important how?”

“They affect the ownership structure.”

“Of course they do. That is the problem.”

I could hear him moving around.

Perhaps he was in his office.

Perhaps he was standing beside a window, looking at the same view he had seen during countless family business conversations.

I did not know.

I only knew that he had finally said something that deserved a follow-up question.

“Why does the ownership structure need to change now?”

“Dad believes it is the right time.”

“That is still his opinion. What is the reason?”

Raymond did not answer.

I felt the familiar urge to soften my tone.

I wanted to reassure him that I was not trying to attack him.

I wanted to explain that I loved him, that I did not want our relationship to fall apart, and that I was not trying to make life difficult for the company.

Then I stopped myself.

I had spent years adding apologies to perfectly reasonable questions.

I did not need to do that anymore.

“Raymond, I am willing to listen. But you have to tell me something I can actually evaluate.”

He spoke more quietly.

“Dad thinks the company needs to be in a position where decisions can be made without complications.”

“What complications?”

“You.”

The word landed harder than I expected.

I looked down at Kirk.

For a moment, I could not speak.

Then I asked, “What have I done to complicate the company?”

“That is not what I meant.”

“It is what you said.”

“You are not involved in the business. You have not been involved for years.”

“Because Dad never wanted me involved.”

“That is not fair.”

I felt my face grow warm.

“Do you remember asking to attend the meetings when we were younger? You were allowed to sit with him. I was told I would not understand.”

“That was a long time ago.”

“It was the beginning of the same arrangement.”

Raymond said nothing.

I continued.

“You have spent years telling me that I do not understand the business. Now you are using that as a reason to take away my ownership.”

“I am trying to explain what Dad thinks.”

“Then explain what you think.”

The silence that followed was different.

I could hear him breathing.

Finally, he said, “I think it would be easier if the transfer happened.”

“For whom?”

“For everyone.”

I closed my eyes.

That answer had become a family tradition.

Everyone meant my father.

Everyone meant Raymond.

Everyone meant the people who wanted the problem to disappear.

It rarely meant me.

I took a slow breath.

“Would you give up twelve percent of the company without asking questions?”

“That is different.”

“Why?”

“Because I run the business.”

“And I own a share of it.”

“You do not understand the responsibilities involved.”

“Then explain them.”

He became impatient.

“Florence, you have a baby now. You have other things to think about.”

I looked at Kirk.

There it was again.

My son had become a convenient reason to reduce my choices.

I had a child, so I could not understand business.

I was tired, so I could not make decisions.

I was vulnerable, so other people needed to decide for me.

“I can have other responsibilities and still understand a document,” I said.

Raymond exhaled sharply.

“I do not know what you want from me.”

“The truth.”

He was quiet.

I waited for him to say more.

Instead, he told me that our father would not appreciate the conversation and that he did not want to be caught between us.

I almost asked him when he had ever been caught between us.

He had always stood on the side that gave him the most security.

But I did not want to turn the conversation into an argument about our childhood.

I wanted to understand the transfer.

“If you cannot explain the documents, I will have someone else review them.”

“You are making a mistake.”

“Maybe. But it will be my mistake to make.”

He hung up.

I lowered the phone.

For several minutes, I sat without moving.

I was angry.

Not because Raymond had failed to give me every answer.

Because he had admitted that my shares mattered, yet still expected me to give them away without a clear explanation.

I placed Kirk in his bassinet and returned to the table.

The folder waited where I had left it.

I opened it again.

The pages seemed different now.

Not because the words had changed.

Because I had finally stopped treating my brother's confidence as proof that I was wrong.

I did not know what was happening inside the company.

I did not know whether my father was protecting a legitimate business interest or trying to consolidate control for his own reasons.

I would not pretend to know.

But I knew the documents affected me.

That was enough to justify asking questions.

Later that evening, Kirk's father arrived.

He could tell from my expression that something had happened.

“Raymond?”

I nodded.

I told him about the call, including the moment Raymond admitted that my shares were important.

He listened carefully.

When I finished, he looked at the folder.

“Did he explain why?”

“No.”

“Did he tell you what would happen if you kept them?”

“No.”

He leaned back in his chair.

“Then you still need the independent review.”

I nodded.

I was beginning to understand that there was no shortcut.

I could not force my family to explain themselves.

I could not make Raymond tell me what he knew.

I could not make my father admit that he was afraid of losing control.

I could only keep asking the questions that mattered and refuse to sign before I understood the answers.

That was less satisfying than imagining a dramatic confrontation.

It was also more useful.

I told Kirk's father that I wanted to arrange the consultation as soon as possible.

He offered to help me organize the documents.

I accepted.

We placed the pages in order and made a list of the questions I wanted answered.

What exactly would I be giving up?

What rights would I lose?

Was the transfer permanent?

Why was it being requested now?

What would happen if I refused?

I wrote each question down.

The list was short.

But it was the first time I had prepared for a conversation about the company as someone entitled to understand what was happening.

When we finished, I looked at the paper.

My handwriting was uneven because I was tired.

I did not cross anything out.

I folded the list and placed it inside the folder.

Then I put the folder away.

For years, Raymond had told me that I did not understand the business.

Perhaps he was right about my lack of experience.

But that did not mean I had to remain uninformed.

And it certainly did not mean I had to give up my ownership without asking why.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: My Mother Tried to Turn Her Grandson Into Another Bargaining Chip, and I Finally Saw the Price She Expected Me to Pay

The call came the following afternoon.
