9 – The First Time I Asked for Advice Without My Father’s Permission, I Discovered How Much of My Life Had Been Built Around Keeping Him Comfortable

The folder stayed in the drawer for two days.

I knew exactly where it was.

I could have taken it out whenever I wanted, but I chose to spend those first days learning how to care for Kirk without turning every quiet moment into another argument with my parents.

Some mornings were easier than others.

I learned how quickly a baby could turn a peaceful room into a place full of urgent little noises.

I learned that I could be exhausted and happy at the same time.

I also learned that fear did not disappear simply because I had made a decision.

My father's messages continued.

He did not call as often, but the messages became more formal.

He wanted confirmation that I understood his position.

He wanted to know when I intended to complete the transfer.

He wanted me to stop treating the matter as though I had the right to delay it indefinitely.

I read each message.

I answered none of them.

My mother tried a different approach.

She sent a short message saying that she hoped Kirk was doing well.

For a moment, I felt hopeful.

Then I read the next sentence.

She wanted me to remember that a child's future depended on the choices his mother made now.

I put the phone down.

Even when my mother appeared to ask about my son, she found a way to make the conversation about my obedience.

I did not respond.

Instead, I took the folder out of the drawer and placed it on the kitchen table.

It looked ordinary.

A thin stack of paper.

A few signature lines.

Several pages of formal language that seemed designed to make a serious decision feel routine.

I sat down and opened it.

For the first time, I read the documents without imagining my father standing over me.

I read slowly.

Whenever I found a phrase I did not understand, I marked the page with a small slip of paper.

I did not pretend to know more than I did.

That had been one of my mistakes with my family.

I had often nodded when my father explained something because asking him to repeat himself made me feel ignorant.

Now I was willing to admit that I did not understand.

The transfer was important enough to deserve questions.

I set the papers aside when Kirk needed me.

Later, I returned to them.

By the end of the afternoon, I had marked several sections.

I still could not say exactly what every clause meant.

But I understood enough to know that signing would be a significant decision.

I needed independent advice.

I had no intention of asking the family lawyer to explain why my father wanted me to give away my ownership interest.

That lawyer worked for the company.

I needed someone whose responsibility was to advise me.

The next morning, I made a few inquiries about finding independent legal assistance.

It felt strange to do it without telling my parents.

I had spent years believing that any serious decision involving the family company had to pass through my father first.

I had treated his approval as the beginning of every process.

Now I was taking a step without it.

My hands felt cold while I made the call.

The person who answered asked what kind of matter I needed help with.

I explained that my family wanted me to transfer my twelve percent ownership interest in a company, and that I needed someone independent to review the documents before I made a decision.

I did not tell the whole story.

I did not need to.

I explained the facts that mattered.

The person gave me information about arranging a consultation and reviewing the papers.

I wrote down the details.

Then I ended the call.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No one burst into the room.

My father did not appear at the door.

The company did not collapse.

I was simply a woman asking for advice about something that belonged to her.

Still, I sat quietly for a few minutes afterward.

I had expected to feel guilty.

Instead, I felt relieved.

Not because the problem was solved.

Because I had finally done something without asking whether my father would approve.

When Kirk's father came by later that day, I told him what I had done.

He listened while I explained the call and showed him the notes I had written.

He did not praise me as if I had accomplished something extraordinary.

He simply said that getting independent advice was sensible.

That mattered.

I did not need someone to tell me I was brave every time I did something my parents disliked.

I needed someone to treat my decisions as normal.

We sat together while Kirk slept.

The folder rested on the table between us.

“I keep wondering what Dad is so afraid of,” I admitted.

He looked at the documents.

“Have you asked him?”

“Several times.”

“And what does he say?”

“That the company needs stability.”

He nodded slowly.

“That tells you what he wants. It does not explain why your shares have to be transferred.”

I looked at him.

That was exactly the problem.

My father kept repeating the reason he preferred, not the explanation I needed.

I had begun to suspect that the transfer mattered for reasons he did not want to discuss.

But suspicion was not proof.

I reminded myself of that.

I did not want to invent motives simply because I was angry.

I wanted the facts.

The following day, Raymond called.

I watched his name appear on my phone and considered ignoring it.

Then I answered.

“Florence.”

He sounded tired.

“What is it, Raymond?”

“Dad says you are looking for independent advice.”

I looked at the folder.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I almost laughed.

“Because you want me to sign away my shares.”

“You know that is not how we see it.”

“Then tell me how you see it.”

He sighed.

“We have already explained the reasons.”

“No. Dad has repeated that the company needs stability. You have told me that he knows best. Neither of you has explained why I should transfer my ownership.”

Raymond was quiet.

I waited.

Finally, he said, “You are making this harder than it needs to be.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

The same accusation.

The same refusal to answer the question.

“Raymond, if the transfer is as straightforward as you say, an independent review should not frighten anyone.”

“It is not about being frightened.”

“Then what is it about?”

He did not answer.

I heard a faint sound on his end, as though he had moved the phone away from his mouth.

When he spoke again, his voice had become more distant.

“You are putting yourself in the middle of a business matter you do not understand.”

“I am already in the middle of it. You are asking me to sign.”

He ended the call without saying goodbye.

I sat with the phone in my hand.

For years, I had assumed Raymond's confidence came from understanding the company better than I did.

Perhaps some of it did.

But I was beginning to recognize another possibility.

He had never needed me to understand the business.

He had needed me to accept his explanations.

Those were not the same thing.

I put the phone down and returned to the papers.

There were still sections I could not interpret.

There were still questions I needed to ask.

But I no longer felt embarrassed about asking them.

That evening, my mother sent another message.

She said my father was disappointed in the way I was handling the situation.

I read it twice.

Then I typed a reply.

I am reviewing the documents before making a decision. I will contact you when I have something to discuss.

I hesitated before sending it.

The sentence seemed too formal for a message to my mother.

Then I realized that formality was not the problem.

I was trying to speak clearly without allowing the conversation to become another argument about my character.

I sent it.

She did not reply.

I put the phone away.

Kirk began to cry from the next room.

I went to him.

By the time I picked him up, the rest of the world had become less important again.

His small hand closed around my finger.

I looked at him and thought about the future I wanted to give him.

I did not want him to grow up believing that the loudest person in a room was always right.

I did not want him to confuse authority with kindness.

And I did not want him to learn that keeping the peace was more important than telling the truth.

I could not control what my parents taught him if they eventually became part of his life.

But I could control what I taught him myself.

That night, I put the folder back in the drawer.

The next step was clear.

I would have the documents reviewed.

I would ask my questions.

And I would make the decision when I understood what I was deciding.

My father might call that disobedience.

For the first time, I was comfortable letting him be wrong about me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Raymond Finally Admitted That My Shares Mattered More Than He Had Said, but He Still Expected Me to Trust Him Without an Explanation

The folder stayed in the drawer for two days.
