I am trying to understand what you are asking me to give up.”

My father ended the call.

I stared at the phone.

It was becoming a pattern.

Whenever I asked a question that required an actual explanation, he found a reason to stop talking.

I placed Kirk carefully in his bassinet.

Then I took the documents from the drawer.

The papers were still arranged in the order Raymond had left them.

I read the first page again.

The wording was formal, but the result was clear.

My ownership interest would no longer belong to me.

I turned to the next page.

There were spaces for signatures and dates.

A few paragraphs referred to my voluntary agreement.

That phrase bothered me more each time I saw it.

Voluntary.

I had not requested the transfer.

I had not negotiated its terms.

I had not been given an independent explanation.

My father had simply decided that I should sign.

I placed the documents back in the folder.

Then I called the hospital's patient services desk and asked how I could arrange for a private conversation with a lawyer after discharge.

The person who answered gave me general information about finding independent legal assistance and reminded me that I did not need to sign an outside document as part of my hospital discharge.

I thanked her.

It was not a solution to the larger problem.

But it confirmed something important.

My parents' deadline was not the same thing as a legal obligation.

I could take the time I needed to understand my own affairs.

That afternoon, Raymond arrived again.

He did not bring the bakery bag this time.

He entered the room carrying only his briefcase.

He glanced at Kirk and then at me.

“Have you signed?”

“No.”

He closed the door behind him.

“Florence, this has gone far enough.”

I was too tired to argue about his choice of words.

“What exactly has gone far enough?”

“The refusal. The messages. The constant questioning.”

I stared at him.

“I have asked for an explanation of a document that would transfer my ownership to someone else.”

“You are acting as though Dad is trying to steal from you.”

“I am acting as though I have the right to understand what I sign.”

Raymond put his briefcase on the chair.

“You know how much he has done for this family.”

“I do.”

“Then why are you treating him like an enemy?”

I looked at my brother for a long moment.

There had been a time when I thought Raymond and I would become closer as adults.

I imagined that once we were no longer children competing for our parents' attention, we might finally understand each other.

Instead, our roles had hardened.

He was the son who protected the family.

I was the daughter who needed to be corrected.

I wondered whether he had ever noticed how convenient that arrangement was for him.

“Do you think I should give up my shares because Dad asked me to?”

Raymond sighed.

“I think you should stop turning everything into a confrontation.”

“That is not what I asked.”

He looked away.

I waited.

Finally, he said, “I think you should trust the people who know the business.”

“Do you know what the transfer does?”

“Yes.”

“Then explain it.”

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Then he picked up the briefcase again.

“You are not going to listen.”

“I am listening now.”

“No. You have already decided that we are wrong.”

I almost told him that I had decided nothing about the company.

I had only decided not to sign papers under pressure.

But Raymond was already walking toward the door.

Before he left, he turned back.

“You are risking more than you understand.”

I looked at him.

“Then help me understand.”

He did not respond.

The door closed.

I sat quietly for a while.

I was beginning to see that the problem was not simply that my parents wanted my shares.

It was that they expected me to surrender them without being allowed to ask why.

They treated questions as disloyalty.

They treated hesitation as disrespect.

They treated independent judgment as a personal attack.

And every time I accepted that logic, I made it easier for them to repeat the same behavior.

I picked up the folder and put it inside my hospital bag.

Not because I intended to sign it.

Because I intended to keep a record of what they had asked me to do.

I would not let anyone later pretend that I had misunderstood the situation.

That evening, Kirk's father returned.

He came in quietly and looked at the packed bag.

“Everything ready?”

“Almost.”

He sat beside me.

I told him about Raymond's visit.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he asked whether I wanted him to take the documents and review them.

I hesitated.

Part of me wanted to hand everything over and let someone else deal with it.

I was tired of being afraid.

But I also knew that I needed to remain part of the decision.

“I want independent advice,” I said. “Not someone who will simply tell me what to do.”

He nodded.

“That makes sense.”

“I want to understand what the papers mean before I decide anything.”

“Then that is what you should do.”

I looked at him.

“You are not going to tell me to let it go?”

“No.”

“Even if it causes problems?”

He took my hand.

“Florence, you are allowed to protect what belongs to you.”

The words were simple.

They did not erase the uncertainty.

But they helped me stand more firmly inside it.

I told him I was afraid my father would punish me for refusing.

He did not tell me that nothing bad could happen.

He did not make promises he could not guarantee.

Instead, he said, “We will deal with what actually happens, not every terrible thing you can imagine happening.”

I let out a tired laugh.

“That sounds easier when you say it.”

“It may still be difficult.”

He smiled faintly.

“But you will not have to think through every part of it alone.”

I looked at Kirk.

The baby had fallen asleep with one hand resting beside his face.

I thought about the life ahead of us.

There would be decisions about money, housing, work, and family.

There would be days when I felt capable and days when I questioned myself.

I could not avoid every difficult conversation.

But I could stop letting fear make my decisions before I had even heard the facts.

The next morning, I prepared to leave the hospital.

The nurse reviewed the instructions with me one last time.

I checked Kirk's things.

I made sure I had the papers.

Then I looked around the room where my parents had tried to force me into a decision.

The chair they had used was pushed against the wall.

The bedside table had been cleared.

The glass of water was gone.

Nothing in the room showed what had happened there.

But I would remember it.

Not because my parents had rejected my son.

Because I had refused to let their rejection determine what I did next.

I gathered Kirk into my arms.

His blanket was soft against my cheek.

I kissed his forehead.

Then I turned toward the door.

I was ready to leave.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Left
