There were good moments, too. That is what made it confusing.”

I remembered family holidays when my mother laughed with me in the kitchen.

I remembered my father teaching me to drive, his hand resting near the emergency brake while he gave instructions.

I remembered Raymond and me sitting on the floor of our childhood bedroom, sharing snacks and making fun of television programs.

Those memories were real.

They were also incomplete.

The same people who could be kind on one day could make me feel worthless the next.

For years, I had used the good moments to excuse the bad ones.

Looking back, that is one of the things I regret most.

I had thought love meant giving people endless chances to hurt me.

He squeezed my hand.

“You do not have to decide what kind of people they are forever,” he said. “You only have to decide what you will allow today.”

I looked at him.

It was a simple way of putting it.

It made the problem feel smaller without pretending it was unimportant.

I could not change my parents.

I could decide whether I would sign their papers.

I could decide whether I would answer their calls.

I could decide whether I would allow them to meet Kirk under conditions that made me uncomfortable.

Those were decisions I could make.

The rest would have to wait.

My phone remained switched off in the drawer.

I knew my parents would be furious about that.

I also knew I could not spend every hour anticipating their reaction.

When the man beside me finally checked his phone, he frowned at the screen.

“Everything all right?” I asked.

“I have a few things to deal with.”

“Work?”

“Yes.”

I had known he had responsibilities outside our relationship.

He had never hidden that from me.

But we had always kept our personal lives separate from the world that surrounded his work.

I had never wanted our relationship to become a discussion among people who knew neither of us.

He looked at me.

“I can stay longer if you need me.”

I shook my head.

“Go take care of what you need to take care of.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

He leaned down and kissed me.

Then he touched Kirk's hand.

“I will be back.”

I watched him leave.

The room seemed quieter afterward.

But it did not feel empty.

That was new.

I was used to measuring my security by whether someone else was physically present to defend me.

Now I understood that support could remain even after a person left the room.

He had not asked me to surrender control.

He had not made decisions on my behalf.

He had given me the space to make my own.

I picked up the folded paper on which he had written the baby's care instructions.

His handwriting was neat, with one word crossed out and rewritten beside it.

I smiled.

It was such an ordinary thing to keep.

I folded the paper again and placed it beside the hospital forms.

For the rest of the afternoon, I concentrated on Kirk.

When he cried, I checked his blanket.

When he settled, I rested.

When a nurse came to discuss my recovery, I listened instead of pretending I was fine.

I was still frightened.

I was still hurt.

But I was no longer trying to prove to anyone that I could endure everything without help.

That evening, I switched my phone back on.

The screen filled with missed calls and messages.

My mother had called several times.

My father had left a short message asking me to contact him immediately.

Raymond had sent two more texts.

The first said that our father was losing patience.

The second said I needed to think carefully about what I was doing to the family.

I read them all.

Then I placed the phone on the table.

I did not reply.

A few minutes later, another message arrived.

This one was from my father.

He wanted to know whether I had reconsidered the transfer.

I stared at the words.

I thought about the folder.

I thought about the blank signature line.

I thought about the way he had stood beside my bed, certain that he could make me surrender something important simply by setting a deadline.

Then I typed a response.

I will not sign the transfer documents without independent advice.

I read it twice.

It was neither angry nor dramatic.

It was a boundary.

I sent it.

My father called almost immediately.

I watched the phone vibrate.

For a moment, I considered answering.

Then I remembered the conversation we had already had.

He had not listened when I asked him to explain the documents.

He had not listened when I asked why the transfer was necessary.

He had not listened when I told him I needed time.

There was no reason to believe another call would be different.

I let it ring.

When it stopped, I turned the phone over.

The next morning, I expected another argument.

Instead, my mother sent a message asking whether I had spoken to Kirk's father.

I read it several times.

There was no greeting.

No question about the baby.

No apology for refusing to acknowledge him.

She had simply jumped to the subject she considered most important.

I did not respond.

My father called again later that morning.

This time, I answered because I wanted to be clear.

“Florence, what is this about independent advice?”

“It means I want someone who does not work for the company to review the papers.”

“You are creating unnecessary complications.”

“I am protecting myself.”

He made a sharp sound.

“You are part of this family.”

“I know.”

“Then you should trust us.”

I looked at Kirk.

He was sleeping in his bassinet, his mouth slightly open.

“I trusted you to care about me,” I said. “That did not mean I agreed to everything you wanted.”

My father was silent.

I could hear a faint rustle on his end of the call.

Then he spoke in a lower voice.

“You have changed.”

I almost told him that I had been changing for years.

He simply had not noticed because the changes had not threatened him before.

Instead, I said, “I have become a mother.”

“That does not give you the right to disregard your obligations.”

“What obligation requires me to sign away my ownership?”

He did not answer the question.

He repeated that the company needed stability.

I told him I would review the documents when I was ready.

Then I ended the call.

My hand was shaking afterward.

I was not proud of that.

I wanted to be the kind of person who could speak calmly to my father without feeling like a child waiting for punishment.

But confidence did not arrive all at once.

Sometimes it meant doing the difficult thing while your body still reacted as though you were in danger.

I placed the phone beside the hospital forms.

Then I reached for Kirk.

He opened his eyes and looked at me.

I touched his cheek.

“I am trying,” I whispered.

That was the truth.

I was trying to become a mother who could protect her child without teaching him to live in fear.

And I was beginning to understand that those two things were connected.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: My Father Believed the Family Name Could Silence Every
