I no longer checked my phone every few minutes to see whether Raymond had sent another message.

I still worried about the future.

I still felt the ache of being rejected by the people who were supposed to care about me.

But I was no longer waiting for them to decide whether I deserved to be a mother.

Kirk did not need their permission.

He needed me.

That evening, I sat with him in my arms while the hospital lights reflected off the window.

Outside, the sky had darkened.

Inside, the room smelled faintly of clean linen and the lotion a nurse had used on her hands.

I thought about the home I would return to.

I thought about the bills, the sleepless nights, and the thousand small decisions I would have to make without anyone telling me what to do.

The thought frightened me.

Then I remembered my parents standing at the foot of the bed.

They had wanted me to feel that I had no choice.

They had wanted me to believe that without their approval, I would have nothing.

But I had already lived through months of uncertainty.

I had gone to appointments alone.

I had prepared for Kirk's arrival.

I had faced my fears one day at a time.

I could not honestly say I had handled everything perfectly.

There had been nights when I cried.

There had been mornings when I wondered whether I was making a terrible mistake.

There had even been moments when I wished my parents would call and tell me they had changed their minds.

I was not ashamed of those feelings.

I was ashamed that I had once believed their love depended on my willingness to obey.

The following morning, my mother called again.

I let the phone ring twice before answering.

“Florence, we need to settle this.”

I looked at Kirk, who was lying in his bassinet beside the bed.

“Good morning to you, too.”

She ignored the remark.

“Your father has made arrangements. station.

I did not recognize the words.

Then the conversation ended, and footsteps moved along the corridor.

I barely paid attention.

I was busy checking that Kirk's blanket had not slipped over his face.

A few minutes later, my phone lit up with another message from my father.

The words were brief.

He wanted the transfer completed before I left.

I read it once.

Then I turned the phone off.

I was finished allowing his deadlines to determine how I felt about myself.

I did not know whether refusing him would cost me money, family relationships, or both.

I did not know what Raymond would do when he realized I would not fall into line.

I did not know how my parents would explain their behavior to their friends.

But those questions could wait.

Kirk needed to be fed.

I settled him in my arms and looked at his face.

For the first time since my parents had entered the room, I felt something close to peace.

It was not because the problem had disappeared.

It was because I had stopped pretending that obeying them was the only way to solve it.

I kissed my son's forehead.

Then I heard footsteps approaching again.

These were slower than the earlier ones.

They stopped outside my door.

I looked up.

The handle had not moved yet.

My heart began to beat faster, and I could not explain why.

I thought it might be another nurse.

Perhaps someone had come to deliver more paperwork.

Perhaps my father had decided to return and repeat his demand.

I tightened my hold on Kirk.

Whatever happened next, I would not sign the papers simply to make the room quiet again.

I had made that decision.

And I intended to keep it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Footsteps Outside My Door Belonged to Someone My Parents Had Never Managed to Control, and I Finally Understood Why They Were Afraid

By the time the afternoon light faded, I had stopped expecting an apology.
