My body was recovering, my thoughts kept circling the same arguments, and every time Kirk made a small sound, I woke to check that he was comfortable.

I did not mind waking for him.

That surprised me.

Before his birth, I had worried about whether I would be patient enough to care for a baby. I had wondered whether fear would make me overprotective or whether exhaustion would turn me into someone I did not recognize.

Instead, whenever I looked at him, the rest of the world seemed to move farther away.

He did not care about my family's reputation.

He did not know what a company was.

He had no idea that his grandfather considered his existence an embarrassment.

He needed warmth, food, and someone who would come when he cried.

I could do those things.

For the first time in a long while, I knew exactly what mattered.

A nurse brought breakfast and asked whether I wanted Kirk placed in his bassinet while I ate.

I thanked her and carefully moved him beside me.

The food had gone lukewarm by the time I took the first bite.

I was still eating when my phone vibrated on the table.

A message from my brother appeared on the screen.

Raymond.

I stared at his name for a moment before opening it.

He had written only one sentence.

Dad says you are refusing to cooperate. Please do not make this worse.

I read it twice.

Then I set the phone down.

Raymond had not asked how I was doing.

He had not asked whether Kirk was healthy.

He had not even acknowledged that I had become a mother.

He had simply repeated my father's complaint.

That was Raymond's way.

He rarely needed to threaten anyone himself. He had learned that repeating our father's wishes in a calm voice often produced the same result.

When we were children, I used to think Raymond was simply more confident than I was.

He spoke easily around adults. He understood how to make my father laugh, and he could turn an ordinary question into a discussion that made him sound older than he was.

My parents rewarded those qualities.

By the time we were adults, Raymond had become the person everyone expected to inherit the family business.

I had become the person everyone expected to agree.

I picked up the phone again.

I typed a response asking whether he knew why our father wanted my shares transferred.

I stared at the message.

Then I deleted it.

I knew how the conversation would go.

Raymond would tell me that I was overreacting.

He would explain that the transfer was sensible.

He would remind me that I had a baby to think about and that I should not turn a business matter into a personal fight.

He might even sound kind.

That was what made it difficult.

He could make surrender sound like maturity.

I put the phone facedown.

A few minutes later, it vibrated again.

This time, the message was from my mother.

She wanted to know whether I had reconsidered.

I did not answer.

I had spent too many years responding immediately whenever my parents contacted me. A message from my father could ruin an entire afternoon, even if it contained nothing more than a request to call him.

I had treated their attention as something urgent because they had taught me that being available was part of being a good daughter.

Now I had a newborn beside me.

If I was going to learn how to protect my time, I needed to begin somewhere.

I turned the phone off.

The silence felt uncomfortable.

Then it felt good.

I spent the next hour watching Kirk sleep.

His hands were impossibly small. When I touched his palm, his fingers closed around mine without any understanding of what he was doing.

I wondered what kind of man he would become.

I wondered whether he would ever ask why his grandparents had refused to hold him.

I wondered how I would explain that some people cared more about the appearance of a family than the people who made one.

I did not have answers.

I only knew that I would never tell him he was a mistake.

That afternoon, my father called the hospital room.

I considered letting the call go unanswered.

But I wanted to hear whether anything had changed.

I picked up.

“Florence.”

He sounded as if he were calling from his office.

No greeting.

No question about my recovery.

“What is it, Dad?”

“Your mother tells me you have not responded to her.”

“I have been resting.”

“You have time to rest and still answer a message.”

I looked at Kirk.

He was awake, staring at the ceiling with an expression of complete concentration.

“I will respond when I am ready.”

My father went quiet.

I could almost picture him sitting behind his large desk, one hand resting on a stack of papers while someone waited outside his office.

He disliked being reminded that other people had their own schedules.

“The documents need to be signed before you leave.”

“I have not changed my mind.”

“You are making a serious mistake.”

“You keep saying that, but you still have not told me why I should give up my shares.”

“Because the family needs stability.”

“What does that have to do with me having a baby?”

He exhaled sharply.

“This is precisely the problem. You are not required to sign anything you do not understand.”

I thanked her.

After she left, I looked at the blank signature line.

My father had wanted my signature so badly that he had brought the documents to my hospital bed.

He had spoken as though the transfer were already decided.

But the papers were still unsigned.

That fact mattered more than I had realized.

My ownership share had not vanished simply because my father had decided it should belong to someone else.

I placed the hospital paperwork in a drawer and returned my attention to Kirk.

The next morning, Raymond arrived.

He came alone.

He wore a pale blue shirt beneath a dark jacket and carried a small paper bag from a bakery near the hospital.

For a moment, I thought he had come to meet his nephew.

He set the bag on the table and glanced toward the bassinet.

Then he looked at me.

“You look tired.”

“I gave birth.”

He nodded as though I had reminded him of a minor inconvenience.

“Dad is very upset.”

I did not answer.

Raymond pulled the chair closer to the bed.

“I thought we could talk without everyone getting emotional.”

“Who is emotional?”

He gave me a familiar look.

The same one he had used when we were teenagers and I challenged him at family dinners.

“You know what I mean.”

I did.

He meant that I should stop asking questions.

He meant that I should stop making our father angry.

He meant that I should make the problem disappear before it reached anyone outside the family.

Raymond glanced at Kirk.

For one brief moment, his expression softened.

“He is small.”

“He was born yesterday.”

“I know.”

He looked away.

I waited for him to say something about the baby.

Instead, he opened his briefcase.

The sight made my stomach tighten.

He took out a document packet and placed it on the table beside the bakery bag.

“I brought the revised transfer papers.”

I stared at them.

“Revised how?”

“Some technical details have been adjusted.”

“Which details?”

Raymond rubbed the bridge of his nose.

“Florence, this is not a complicated matter.”

“Then explaining it should be easy.”

He leaned back in the chair.

For a moment, I saw the boy he had been, sitting across from me at our parents'
