19 – I Had Been Waiting for Claire to Explain Herself, Until I Realized I Was the One Who Had Never Given Her an Honest Explanation

I wanted to apologize.

I had wanted to apologize before.

That was not new.

What was new was my uncertainty about whether I could do it without asking Claire for something in return.

I sat with my phone in my hand.

Her name was on the screen.

I hadn't called again.

But I kept thinking about what I might say if she finally answered.

At first, the words came easily.

"I'm sorry."

"I know I hurt you."

"I want to explain."

Then I stopped.

That last sentence troubled me.

I want to explain.

I had said versions of it throughout our marriage.

It sounded reasonable.

It sounded like someone accepting responsibility.

But too often, what I really meant was that I wanted another opportunity to make my behavior seem understandable.

I wanted Claire to hear my reasons.

I wanted her to consider my pressures.

I wanted her to recognize that I hadn't intended every consequence.

And when she listened, I wanted her to become less angry.

I had used explanation as a substitute for change.

I knew that now.

I stared at the phone.

What could I honestly tell her?

I had been unfaithful.

I had allowed the affair to continue for three years.

I had humiliated her.

I had expected her to remain patient.

I had underestimated her ability to act independently.

Those were facts.

They didn't require a speech.

They didn't require a carefully prepared defense.

They required acknowledgment.

Yet even now, I could feel my mind searching for softer language.

Mistakes.

Confusion.

A difficult period.

A marriage under strain.

Each phrase offered a little distance from what I had done.

I didn't want that distance anymore.

I put the phone down.

The email remained beside it.

I had begun to associate those two objects with different kinds of truth.

The phone reminded me of my relationship with Claire.

The calls I had made.

The silence I couldn't control.

The conversations I had avoided when she wanted honesty.

The paper reminded me of responsibilities that existed beyond our private feelings.

Records.

Expenses.

Business decisions.

Matters that couldn't be dismissed merely because I felt uncomfortable.

I had once believed those two areas of my life were unrelated.

Now they sat side by side.

I looked at Jasmine's name.

It still made me uncomfortable.

I knew why.

I wanted to believe I could describe the affair in a way that made my betrayal seem less deliberate.

But three years was too long to hide behind that idea.

I had made choices.

Again and again.

Claire had lived with the consequences.

I didn't need to invent a particular argument or painful evening to make the truth larger.

The broad facts were already serious enough.

I had humiliated the person I had promised to treat with loyalty.

That was what I had done.

I thought about how often Claire had become quiet.

In the past, I had welcomed it.

Her silence allowed me to tell myself the argument had ended.

I didn't have to face more questions.

I didn't have to hear how deeply I had hurt her.

I could return to the version of our marriage that suited me.

Looking back, that silence should have worried me.

Not because quietness always means someone is leaving.

It doesn't.

But because I had been using it as permission to avoid responsibility.

I had never asked whether the issue was actually resolved.

I simply wanted it to disappear.

Now Claire's silence meant I couldn't get the reassurance I wanted.

I found myself wondering how many times she had experienced that same helplessness with me.

I couldn't know.

I didn't have her account.

But I knew I had refused her honesty.

That was enough to understand that the imbalance had been real.

I thought about writing an apology.

I considered the words.

I wanted to say that I understood my responsibility.

I wanted to say that I wouldn't pressure her.

I wanted to tell her that I didn't expect Nathan Brooks's involvement to disappear simply because I regretted my behavior.

Those might have been honest statements.

But I hesitated.

I knew how easily an apology could become another demand.

I could send it and immediately begin watching the phone.

I could wonder why she hadn't responded.

I could tell myself I deserved acknowledgment because I had finally said the right thing.

Then I would be doing the same thing again.

Making my feelings the center.

Making Claire responsible for soothing them.

I put the idea aside.

I wasn't refusing to apologize.

I was refusing to treat an apology as a tool for getting a response.

I needed to learn that difference.

I looked toward the door.

I remembered Michael placing the email on the desk.

I remembered the moment I learned Nathan Brooks represented Claire.

I had been shocked.

That reaction still embarrassed me.

Why had I assumed Claire wouldn't seek serious legal help?

Why had I assumed she would continue dealing with everything privately?

Why had I believed she would accept my behavior indefinitely?

The answers weren't complicated.

I had underestimated her.

I had valued my own comfort above her judgment.

I had treated her patience as weakness.

Now I was facing the consequences of those assumptions.

I couldn't decide whether she would forgive me.

I couldn't decide what Nathan might do next.

I couldn't decide what the board might conclude if relevant records were examined.

I had to accept that those outcomes belonged to processes and people beyond my control.

I leaned back.

For a while, I simply listened to the office.

Someone was moving in the hallway.

I heard a distant voice.

Then the ordinary sounds faded.

I had spent years making myself important in every conversation.

Even when Claire was hurt, I wanted my intentions discussed.

Even when she was humiliated, I wanted her to understand my feelings.

Even when I was clearly wrong, I wanted her to acknowledge that the situation was complicated.

Now I could see what that had cost her.

Her experience had always been pushed aside.

Not because I didn't know she was suffering.

Because I didn't want to give her suffering the attention it deserved.

I felt ashamed.

I had felt ashamed earlier.

This was different only in that I no longer wanted to turn the feeling into proof that I was changing.

Shame wasn't restitution.

Regret wasn't honesty.

And understanding my conduct didn't mean Claire had to welcome me back.

I looked at the phone.

Still silent.

I thought about the possibility that she might never answer another call from me.

I didn't want that.

I wanted our marriage to be something other than the history of what I had done.

But I couldn't make that wish into a prediction.

I had no evidence that Claire wanted reconciliation.

I had no evidence that she had made a final decision about our future either.

I simply didn't know.

For once, I tried to respect the difference between my hopes and her intentions.

I returned my attention to the email.

There was nothing new.

The same preservation request.

The same categories.

The same attorney.

The same uncertainty.

But I wasn't searching the paper for a way to discredit Claire anymore.

I was trying to understand what responsibilities I could acknowledge without demanding an immediate reward.

I knew I had betrayed her.

I knew I had to respect her choice not to speak.

I knew the request involving company records deserved serious consideration.

Those conclusions weren't enough to repair the damage.

They weren't meant to be.

They were simply true.

I held the phone once more.

Then I placed it beside the paper.

I didn't call.

I didn't write a message that asked Claire to make me feel forgiven.

I let the silence remain.

For three years, I had expected her to understand me.

Now I had to accept that she might not want another explanation.

And if she ever did listen, the truth would have to come without the excuses I had relied on for so long.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: My Wife Had Already
