18 – The More I Tried to Separate My Marriage From My Position at Work, the More Clearly I Saw My Own Double Standard

I had always expected people at work to answer for their decisions.

That was part of being responsible.

I understood it.

I believed in it.

I had insisted on it more times than I could count.

But when a question involved me, I suddenly wanted a different standard.

I wanted privacy.

I wanted understanding.

I wanted everyone to accept that the matter was complicated.

I had never noticed how convenient those words were until Claire's attorney used a very different kind of language.

Preserve the records.

That was what the request amounted to.

Keep the relevant information.

Do not allow it to disappear.

Make sure the material remains available.

It was plain.

It was practical.

It was also more difficult to argue against than I had expected.

I could defend my intentions.

I could explain my feelings.

I could talk about the problems in my marriage.

But none of those things answered whether relevant company records should remain intact.

I looked at the printed email.

I didn't know whether Nathan Brooks had obtained any information beyond what Michael had shown me.

I didn't know which documents would eventually matter.

I didn't know what Claire had told him.

I needed to keep those uncertainties separate from what I knew.

That was becoming an uncomfortable lesson.

My mind kept searching for an outcome.

If I imagined the request was harmless, I felt temporary relief.

If I imagined it was devastating, I panicked.

Neither reaction changed the facts.

The email still existed.

It still named the same three subjects.

And Claire still hadn't answered my calls.

I sat back.

The name Jasmine Cole seemed to draw my eyes every time I read the page.

I wished it didn't.

I wished I could look at it without remembering what I had done to Claire.

But that was impossible.

Jasmine was connected to the affair.

I couldn't pretend otherwise.

I had been unfaithful to my wife.

Not once in some moment I could describe as an isolated failure.

For three years.

The length mattered.

It showed that the betrayal had become part of my ordinary behavior.

I had continued while knowing I was hurting Claire.

I had allowed her to be humiliated.

I had made excuses.

And I had expected the marriage to remain available to me.

Now Jasmine's name appeared in a request concerning employment and compensation decisions.

I couldn't know the significance of those particular records from the wording alone.

But I understood why the request demanded attention.

Employment decisions were not simply private conversations.

Compensation decisions could be documented.

Those were subjects a company had reason to handle carefully.

I knew that.

I had always known it.

What I hadn't wanted was to apply that understanding to a situation involving me.

I rested my hand on the email.

I thought about how quickly I had asked Michael whether Claire was threatening me.

I had wanted the request described as hostile.

If it was hostile, I could feel attacked.

If I felt attacked, I could defend myself.

If I defended myself, perhaps I wouldn't have to think about why Claire had reached the point of retaining counsel.

That was the path my mind had taken.

It was familiar.

I had followed it during our marriage.

Whenever Claire raised something painful, I searched for something wrong with the way she raised it.

I could tell her she was being unfair.

I could say she had chosen the wrong moment.

I could complain that she was making matters worse.

Then the conversation would become about her reaction rather than my behavior.

I had relied on that change of subject.

I knew it now.

I was trying to do the same thing with the preservation request.

I wanted to debate whether Claire should have contacted the board.

I wanted to question Nathan's motives.

I wanted to describe the situation as excessive.

But those arguments didn't answer the questions about records.

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I imagined Michael standing in front of another executive.

A different man.

Someone whose wife had retained an attorney.

Someone whose affair had become connected to questions involving company resources.

If Michael brought me that information, what would I say?

I knew.

I would want the request handled seriously.

I would want relevant records preserved.

I would not assume that a formal inquiry was meaningless merely because the person involved was embarrassed.

I wouldn't want someone else making decisions based on loyalty to that executive.

I would want accuracy.

That thought made me open my eyes.

I had been asking for special treatment without admitting it.

I wanted Michael to protect me from discomfort.

I wanted the board to view the matter through my personal wishes.

I wanted Claire to keep everything between us.

And I wanted all those things because they would benefit me.

It wasn't a principled position.

It was self-interest.

I looked toward the door.

I considered how little Michael had actually said.

He had not accused me of wrongdoing.

He had not announced an investigation result.

He had not predicted my professional future.

He had simply delivered the preservation request and identified its source.

I had supplied most of the drama myself.

I had imagined threats.

I had feared exposure.

I had worried about how much Claire knew.

Those thoughts came from me.

They weren't written in the email.

I needed to remember that.

I reached for the phone.

Then I stopped.

There was no reason to check again.

Claire had already made her position clear through her lack of response.

At least for now, she did not want to speak with me.

I had to respect that.

I thought about the way I'd treated her silence during our marriage.

Sometimes I had been relieved when she stopped asking questions.

Sometimes I had interpreted it as acceptance.

Sometimes I had taken it as permission to return to whatever I preferred doing.

Now silence meant something different to me.

It meant I couldn't assume anything.

I couldn't assume forgiveness.

I couldn't assume anger had faded.

I couldn't assume she would remain where I expected her.

I didn't know what Claire intended.

That uncertainty was real.

But it didn't give me permission to create an answer that suited me.

I picked up the paper.

The corner had remained bent.

I ran my thumb along it, then stopped.

I had been handling that page like a man searching for a hidden message.

There wasn't one I could reliably identify.

The words were there.

The request was there.

The unanswered questions were there.

I could read them again a hundred times and still not know what Claire had told Nathan.

I set the paper down.

I thought about my professional reputation.

For years, I had considered it proof that I was a respectable man.

I knew how people expected me to behave at work.

I knew how to speak in a difficult meeting.

I knew how to appear calm.

But I had been willing to behave very differently toward my wife.

That contradiction was no longer easy to ignore.

I could not claim to value accountability while demanding an exception for myself.

I couldn't claim to respect honesty while excusing my own deception.

I couldn't claim to care about fairness while treating Claire's independence as an insult.

Those contradictions had been present long before the email.

The document had merely made them harder to hide from myself.

I looked at the phone.

No call.

No message.

I didn't reach for it.

Instead, I returned my attention to the company matter.

I needed to treat the request as something that deserved proper consideration.

Not because I wanted to satisfy Claire.

Not because I hoped Nathan would become less interested.

Because questions concerning company records should be handled according to the facts.

That was the standard I would have demanded from anyone else.

It had to apply to me too.

I could acknowledge the affair without pretending every professional question had already been resolved.

I could acknowledge the formal request without treating it as proof of a particular violation.

I could accept uncertainty without turning it into an accusation against Claire.

Those distinctions mattered.

I had spent years blurring distinctions whenever doing so benefited me.

Now I needed to stop.

I thought about the word husband.

I had worn that role comfortably.

I had accepted the loyalty that came with it.

I had not given the same loyalty in return.

Then I thought about the word executive.

I had accepted the respect attached to that role too.

I had been proud of the responsibility.

But I had wanted that respect to shield me from uncomfortable questions.

Neither role gave me that right.

Being a husband didn't entitle me to Claire's forgiveness.

Being an executive didn't entitle me to avoid scrutiny.

I placed the email flat.

The paper hadn't changed.

The facts hadn't changed.

But I was no longer willing to describe accountability as unfair simply because it had reached my own desk.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: I Had
