16 – I Wanted Claire to Give Me One More Chance to Explain, but I Finally Understood Why She Might Not Want to Listen

I had always believed I deserved a chance to explain myself.

That belief followed me everywhere.

If someone questioned my judgment, I wanted to respond.

If someone misunderstood my intentions, I wanted to correct them.

If a conversation ended badly, I wanted another opportunity to make my position clear.

I called that fairness.

Sometimes it was.

But with Claire, I had used the idea differently.

I wanted another chance to speak even after I had wasted the chances she had already given me.

I wanted her to listen even though I had often refused to listen to her.

I wanted her to consider my feelings after I had spent three years treating hers as negotiable.

That was the truth I found hardest to accept.

I sat with my phone beside the printed email.

Neither had moved for some time.

The call history was still there if I wanted to look.

Twenty-seven attempts that morning.

Another unanswered call after Michael showed me the preservation request.

I had made those calls because I was frightened.

I could no longer pretend otherwise.

I wanted Claire's voice to reassure me.

I wanted her to explain Nathan Brooks's involvement.

I wanted her to tell me how much she knew about the matters mentioned in the email.

I wanted information that might help me protect myself.

I hadn't been ready to give her the honesty she deserved.

Recognizing that changed the way I thought about contacting her.

I still wanted to speak.

But I couldn't justify another attempt merely because I disliked being ignored.

I had ignored too much myself.

I looked at the paper.

The preservation request concerned my possible personal use of company resources, executive travel expenses, and employment or compensation decisions involving Jasmine Cole.

Those subjects hadn't changed.

Neither had the fact that the request was formal.

Nathan Brooks represented Claire.

His reputation made it clear that the matter deserved attention.

But I didn't know what he intended beyond the preservation request.

I didn't know what records might ultimately matter.

I didn't know what the board would decide.

And I didn't know whether Claire intended to speak with me at all.

For once, I allowed those unknowns to remain unknown.

I didn't invent a conversation between Claire and Nathan.

I didn't imagine secret documents.

I didn't decide that a particular outcome was inevitable.

I simply acknowledged that I didn't have the answers.

That was more difficult than it sounded.

I had built much of my confidence around the ability to explain what was happening.

I liked having an answer.

I liked being the person other people consulted.

Now I was the one who didn't know.

The feeling was uncomfortable.

But discomfort wasn't evidence of unfair treatment.

I had to keep reminding myself.

I thought about Michael.

He had been the first person to show me how serious Claire's action might be.

Not by frightening me deliberately.

By refusing to soften the facts.

He had given me the email.

He had explained its nature.

He had named Nathan Brooks.

Then he had allowed me to react.

I hadn't reacted well.

I had laughed.

I had questioned Claire's motives.

I had asked whether she was threatening me.

I had tried to call her again.

Looking back, every one of those reactions revealed something I would rather not see.

I had been less interested in understanding the situation than in finding a way to regain control.

I couldn't deny that.

I thought about the word control.

I had never described my behavior toward Claire that way.

I preferred to think of myself as decisive.

Practical.

A man who didn't enjoy unnecessary arguments.

But those descriptions concealed something important.

I often wanted conversations to end when they became uncomfortable for me.

I wanted Claire to accept whatever explanation I offered.

I wanted her to stop questioning decisions I didn't wish to defend.

That wasn't simply a preference for peace.

It was a refusal to share power in our marriage.

I had acted as though my comfort mattered more than her right to know the truth.

And for three years, I had allowed that attitude to continue.

I put my hands together.

I felt ashamed.

Not the sudden embarrassment of being caught doing something foolish.

Something quieter.

Heavier.

The recognition that I had repeatedly treated another person as less important than myself.

I had loved the idea of being a respected man.

I hadn't behaved like one where Claire was concerned.

That was difficult to reconcile.

I thought about Jasmine.

Her name was still in the request.

I couldn't separate the affair from my responsibility for it.

I couldn't describe her involvement in a way that erased my own choices.

I had been the husband.

I had owed Claire loyalty.

I had failed to give it.

Whatever questions might arise concerning company decisions, that personal responsibility was already clear.

I looked at the phone.

There was no new message.

I had stopped expecting one every minute.

That didn't mean I had stopped caring about the silence.

It meant I had begun to accept that Claire's response wasn't mine to command.

I wondered what would happen if she called.

I imagined hearing my name.

I imagined the familiar impulse to begin explaining.

Then I considered a different possibility.

What if I simply listened?

What if I allowed her to speak without correcting the way she described my behavior?

What if I resisted the urge to make my intentions more important than her experience?

The thought seemed ordinary.

It should have been ordinary.

In a healthy marriage, listening shouldn't require a personal revelation.

But I had spent years making it difficult.

I had turned basic respect into something Claire had to request.

Now I was sitting alone, imagining that I might finally offer it.

The lateness of that realization hurt.

I didn't know whether she would ever want to test it.

I had no reason to assume she would.

I picked up the phone.

For a moment, I considered writing a message.

A simple apology.

No demands.

No questions about Nathan.

No request for reassurance.

Just an acknowledgment of the harm.

I held the phone for several seconds.

Then I put it back down.

I wasn't certain I could write those words without hoping they would produce an immediate response.

I didn't want to turn an apology into another way of asking Claire to take care of my feelings.

I could wait until I was prepared to say what I meant without attaching a demand to it.

That choice didn't make me generous.

It simply meant I was beginning to recognize the difference between remorse and pressure.

I looked at the email again.

Nothing about the legal matter had been settled.

The board's obligations remained.

Nathan Brooks's request remained.

The questions about records remained.

I couldn't make those disappear by feeling guilty.

And I couldn't use them as an excuse to ignore the damage I had caused in my marriage.

Both matters required honesty.

Not panic.

Not denial.

Not another carefully worded explanation designed to protect my reputation.

I leaned back.

The office was quiet.

I had spent hours wishing Claire would interrupt that quiet with a call.

Now I considered what her silence might mean without pretending I knew the answer.

Perhaps she needed distance.

Perhaps she had decided that further conversations with me were pointless.

Perhaps she was simply concentrating on the steps she had already taken.

I couldn't know.

I wouldn't turn those possibilities into facts.

The only certainty was that she had chosen not to answer me.

I had to respect that.

I looked at the paper one final time.

I remembered the first moment Michael laid it on the desk.

I had laughed.

I had treated it as an attempt to frighten me.

Then I had learned who represented Claire.

The laughter had disappeared.

I could see now how revealing that reaction was.

I hadn't taken my wife's concerns seriously until someone else gave them professional weight.

That was perhaps the most painful admission of all.

Claire had been entitled to honesty and respect long before Nathan Brooks became involved.

She hadn't needed a famous attorney to deserve those things.

I had simply refused to give them to her.

I folded my hands.

For the first time, I stopped imagining that one conversation could repair everything.

If Claire ever chose to speak with me again, I would owe her the truth.

Not a version that made me look better.

Not an explanation designed to end the discussion quickly.

The truth.

And if she chose not to speak, I would still be responsible for what I had done.

Her forgiveness was not a condition of my accountability.

I understood that now.

I couldn't undo the affair.

I couldn't erase the humiliation.

I couldn't guarantee how the formal request would be handled.

But I could stop treating every uncomfortable consequence as something another person had to solve for me.

I left the phone alone.

I left the email visible.

I didn't pretend the situation was improving simply because I had reached a clearer understanding of myself.

Claire was still silent.

Nathan Brooks still represented her.

The questions involving company records were still unresolved.

And I was still the man who had made the choices that brought us here.

That was where I had to begin.

Not with another excuse.

Not with another demand.

With responsibility.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Thought
