15 – I Had Always Treated My Reputation as Something Separate From My Marriage, Until Jasmine’s Name Appeared Beside Mine

For years, I had divided my life into separate pieces.

Work belonged in one place.

My marriage belonged in another.

Jasmine belonged to a part of my life I didn't want examined too closely.

I had convinced myself those divisions were natural.

They weren't.

They were convenient.

They allowed me to behave differently depending on who was watching.

At work, I expected respect.

I wanted people to trust my judgment.

I wanted to be seen as responsible.

At home, I had allowed myself to ignore the responsibilities I owed Claire.

I could be thoughtful in one setting and selfish in another.

Then I would tell myself both versions were equally real.

They were.

That was the problem.

I couldn't choose only the better one when explaining who I was.

I looked at the preservation request.

Jasmine Cole's name was printed clearly.

I had read it so often that I could almost see the words when I closed my eyes.

Employment.

Compensation.

Decisions.

Those were not words about romance.

They were words about responsibility.

I knew they could matter to a company.

I knew they could be supported or questioned by records.

And I knew the attorney had specifically asked that relevant information be preserved.

I wanted to resent Claire for bringing those questions into view.

But I couldn't honestly say the underlying situation had nothing to do with me.

I had made the affair part of my life.

I had allowed it to continue.

I had humiliated my wife.

The request didn't establish whether any employment or compensation decision had been improper.

That question remained open.

But the marriage betrayal was not open in the same way.

I knew what I had done.

I didn't need a board to determine that.

I sat forward.

For a while, I thought about how easily I used to describe my behavior.

A mistake.

A difficult period.

A situation that had gone too far.

Those phrases made the affair sound like something that happened around me.

As though I had simply found myself inside it.

That wasn't true.

I had participated.

I had continued making choices.

I had allowed Claire to carry the consequences.

The plain language was harder to hear.

It was also harder to escape.

I looked toward the phone.

Still no message.

I didn't expect one.

But I wanted one.

I wanted Claire to tell me what she thought.

I wanted her to confirm whether she had reached a final decision about our marriage.

I wanted to know if any part of her still believed we could speak honestly.

Those wishes were real.

So was the fact that she owed me no immediate answer.

I had ignored her needs long enough.

I couldn't now demand that she attend to mine on command.

I turned the screen away.

The gesture had become familiar.

For a moment, I felt angry.

Not at Claire exactly.

At the helplessness.

At being unable to do anything that would immediately change the situation.

I had always preferred action.

If there was a problem at work, I wanted a meeting.

A report.

A decision.

Something measurable.

But the damage to my marriage couldn't be handled like an ordinary business task.

There was no document I could sign that would restore Claire's trust.

No phone call I could make that would undo three years.

No explanation clever enough to turn betrayal into loyalty.

I had spent too long pretending otherwise.

I thought about how often I had been proud of my reputation.

People in business circles knew my name.

I liked believing that my professional standing said something important about my character.

It did say something.

But not everything.

A person could be competent at work and still fail badly at home.

A person could understand responsibility in one context and refuse it in another.

I was living proof.

I didn't enjoy admitting that.

I had always wanted to be judged by my best decisions.

Claire had lived with some of my worst.

Now the difference between those versions of me was becoming impossible to ignore.

I looked at Jasmine's name again.

It wasn't fair to pretend the affair existed without my participation.

I had made choices involving her.

I had been unfaithful to Claire.

No matter what questions arose about business records, I could not describe myself as an innocent bystander in the personal betrayal.

I had tried to make my responsibility smaller by treating everything as complicated.

But complexity didn't erase basic facts.

I was married.

I cheated.

I continued for three years.

Claire was humiliated.

I had no honest defense for that sequence.

I pressed my palms against the desk.

I wondered whether Nathan Brooks had heard the story in those terms.

I didn't know.

Perhaps Claire had explained the marriage differently.

Perhaps she had described things I had never allowed myself to notice.

Perhaps the legal discussion had focused entirely on documents.

I couldn't know.

And I needed to stop filling the gaps with imagined conversations.

I had done too much guessing already.

What mattered was what I could establish.

The request existed.

The attorney represented Claire.

The board had been asked to preserve specific categories of records.

Those were the facts available to me.

I looked around the office.

Everything in the room reflected the professional life I valued.

The desk.

The papers.

The quiet expectation that I could make decisions and be taken seriously.

I had spent years protecting that image.

I had been much less careful with my marriage.

The contrast hurt.

I couldn't claim I hadn't known Claire was suffering.

I knew I had humiliated her.

I knew my behavior was disloyal.

I had simply allowed myself to believe that the damage would remain private.

That was not a moral argument.

It was a calculation.

I had calculated that Claire would endure it.

I had calculated that I could keep different parts of my life separate.

I had calculated that my reputation would remain untouched.

Now those calculations looked painfully foolish.

I had underestimated Claire.

I had also overestimated my ability to control consequences.

I reached for the printed email.

The paper felt almost soft along the bent edge.

I had handled it enough to wear it down.

I wondered whether that was what I had done to Claire's trust.

Not destroyed it in a single moment.

Worn it down through repetition.

One excuse.

One humiliation.

One more refusal to change.

I couldn't know exactly how she experienced those years.

But I knew enough to understand that the harm had accumulated.

I set the paper down.

I wasn't going to call her.

Not because I didn't care.

Because I was beginning to understand that caring couldn't mean demanding immediate access to her.

If Claire wanted a conversation, she would decide when she was ready.

Until then, I had responsibilities that didn't depend on her forgiveness.

I needed to take the preservation request seriously.

I needed to stop treating company questions as personal insults.

I needed to face my role in the affair without looking for someone else to blame.

Those were obligations.

Not achievements.

I couldn't expect praise for recognizing them.

I thought again about Jasmine's name.

There was a reason it disturbed me.

It showed how little protection my carefully separated versions of life actually provided.

The same man who wanted professional respect had made decisions that humiliated his wife.

The same man who demanded accountability from others had spent years avoiding it himself.

I had wanted to believe those things could remain disconnected.

Now I knew better.

I left the email on the desk.

I didn't hide it.

I didn't turn it over.

I didn't call Michael to ask whether he could make the matter disappear.

For once, I let the uncomfortable truth remain visible.

My reputation was not a substitute for my character.

And the way I had treated Claire was part of that character, whether I wanted anyone else to know it or not.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Wanted Claire to Give Me One More Chance to Explain, but I Finally Understood
