14 – Michael Had Given Me the Facts, but I Kept Wanting Him to Explain What Claire Would Never Tell Me

I had always trusted Michael's calmness.

When business became complicated, he usually stayed steady.

He didn't rush to conclusions.

He didn't fill a silence just because someone found it uncomfortable.

For years, I had considered those qualities useful.

That afternoon, they had made me furious.

I understood why now.

Michael had refused to become part of my excuses.

He had brought a document.

He had explained its purpose.

He had answered what he could.

And when I wanted him to predict Claire's intentions, he had declined.

I had interpreted that restraint as a lack of support.

It wasn't.

It was honesty.

The distinction embarrassed me.

I sat alone, remembering the conversation.

I had asked whether Claire was threatening me.

Michael had explained that her lawyer was formally seeking preservation of records.

I had asked who represented her.

He had named Nathan Brooks.

After that, I had barely heard anything except the sound of my own fear.

I remembered staring at the paper.

I remembered the sudden silence after Nathan's name.

I remembered reaching for my phone.

I remembered calling Claire even though she had already ignored twenty-seven attempts.

Those details were clear.

My motives were becoming clearer too.

I hadn't called because I suddenly understood how much I loved her.

I hadn't called because I had worked out how to repair the marriage.

I called because I had become frightened.

I wanted her to end that fear.

Looking back, I could hardly believe how confidently I had expected her to do it.

I had spent three years making Claire feel humiliated.

Then I had been shocked when she didn't make herself available to comfort me.

I rested my hands on the desk.

The email lay between them.

I thought about how I had treated Michael during the conversation.

He wasn't responsible for my affair.

He wasn't responsible for Claire's decision.

He hadn't written the preservation request.

Yet I had spoken to him as if he had somehow failed me by delivering it.

I had wanted a different answer.

And because he didn't provide one, I became irritated.

It was a familiar habit.

When I disliked information, I became dissatisfied with the person giving it to me.

I had done that with Claire many times.

If she raised a concern, I questioned how she raised it.

If she asked something difficult, I accused her of making the situation worse.

The underlying issue remained untouched.

I could see the pattern now.

That didn't make me proud.

I looked toward the door.

I considered asking Michael to return.

Not to demand reassurance.

To acknowledge that I had been unfair.

The thought made me uncomfortable.

I was used to apologizing when doing so would settle a disagreement.

I wasn't used to apologizing without expecting anything in return.

That was another distinction I needed to learn.

I picked up my phone.

For a moment, I thought about contacting him.

Then I stopped.

I hadn't yet decided what I wanted to say.

I didn't want to turn another conversation into an effort to make myself feel better.

I placed the phone down.

The silence returned.

I looked at Nathan's name.

The reputation attached to it still troubled me.

I knew enough about Boston's business community to understand why people paid attention when Nathan Brooks became involved in a dispute.

He wasn't known for meaningless gestures.

His work involved difficult questions.

Money.

Records.

Assets.

Corporate decisions.

But knowing his reputation didn't tell me what he had found in my case.

It didn't mean he had already reached a conclusion.

I had to remember that.

Fear was making me careless with facts.

I kept imagining an outcome and then reacting as though it had already happened.

That was dangerous.

It was also unfair.

Not only to myself.

To Claire.

I had been treating her legal decision as proof that she intended to destroy me.

Nothing in the request established that.

It established that she wanted certain records preserved.

The rest was speculation.

I looked at the page again.

I knew how much I wanted to make her action seem cruel.

If I could convince myself she was trying to hurt me, perhaps I could avoid feeling responsible for hurting her.

That was an old trick.

I had used versions of it throughout our marriage.

When Claire became upset, I acted as though her anger was the original offense.

I rarely let the conversation remain focused on the behavior that caused it.

Now I was tempted to do the same with her attorney.

Instead of facing the reasons Claire might seek help, I wanted to complain that she had sought it.

I couldn't keep doing that.

I leaned back and closed my eyes.

I thought about Jasmine.

I knew her name was connected to the affair.

I knew the request also concerned decisions about her employment and compensation.

Those were separate matters that might intersect.

I couldn't determine the extent of that intersection from the document alone.

But I could accept that someone might reasonably want the records preserved.

That acceptance was difficult.

I wanted the subject closed.

I wanted the questions limited.

I wanted company matters kept separate from my marriage.

Yet I had no authority to decide that separation simply because it suited me.

I opened my eyes.

The office looked the same.

The paper was still there.

The phone was still silent.

Nothing had shifted except my willingness to examine my own reaction.

I considered how Michael must have experienced the conversation.

I didn't know his thoughts.

I couldn't pretend to.

But I knew what he had seen.

An executive receiving a formal request involving company records.

A man who initially laughed.

A man who became silent after hearing a lawyer's name.

A man who immediately tried to call his wife.

Those actions were mine.

I couldn't blame anyone for noticing them.

I had always wanted to appear composed.

Professional.

Capable of handling unpleasant information.

That afternoon, I hadn't been particularly composed.

I had been frightened and defensive.

There was no benefit in pretending otherwise.

I picked up the email.

I read the first category.

Personal use of company resources.

Then the second.

Executive travel expenses.

Then the third.

Employment and compensation decisions involving Jasmine Cole.

I paused at her name.

It remained difficult to see it there.

The paper didn't accuse me of a specific violation.

I reminded myself of that.

But it did identify subjects the attorney considered relevant enough to preserve.

That deserved attention.

Not laughter.

Not dismissal.

Attention.

I thought about how casually I had once treated Claire's questions.

If she had asked me something I didn't want to answer, I could make the conversation exhausting.

Eventually, she might become quiet.

Then I could tell myself the matter was finished.

Now the request would remain whether I became angry or not.

I found something almost painfully simple in that.

Facts didn't disappear when I refused to discuss them.

Questions didn't become unreasonable because they made me uncomfortable.

And the people asking them didn't become enemies merely because I disliked being questioned.

I set the email down.

I wished I had understood that before.

I wished Claire hadn't needed to experience three years of my arrogance.

But wishing was becoming another comfortable place to hide.

It allowed me to feel sorry without doing anything.

I couldn't change the past by regretting it.

I could only stop repeating the same behavior.

I looked toward the door again.

Michael had performed his responsibility by informing me.

I needed to accept that.

I didn't need him to tell me how Claire felt.

I didn't need him to invent a reassuring prediction.

I needed to respect the information he had given me.

I folded my hands.

For the first time, I considered the possibility that someone could be helpful without making me feel better.

Michael had been.

He had delivered an unpleasant truth without exaggerating it.

He had refused to guess.

He had left me to face what I knew.

I had wanted comfort.

Instead, I had received accuracy.

It was less pleasant.

It was also more valuable.

I left the phone untouched.

I no longer needed to ask Michael to repeat what he had already explained.

I understood the request.

What remained uncertain would remain uncertain until there were facts to answer it.

That wasn't a failure on his part.

It wasn't a reason to pressure Claire.

It was simply the position my choices had helped create.

And I was finally learning not to punish other people for telling me where I stood.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: I Had Always Treated
