13 – I Had Spent Three Years Demanding Claire’s Patience, but Now I Was Learning What It Felt Like to Wait Without Answers

I used to think waiting was something other people had to do.

Claire waited for explanations.

She waited for apologies.

She waited for me to take our marriage seriously.

I had never considered what those days might have felt like for her.

Now I was sitting in my office, waiting for a phone call that might never come.

I didn't enjoy the feeling.

Not even a little.

The printed email remained on my desk.

Nathan Brooks's name was still there.

So was Jasmine Cole's.

And so were the questions about company resources, executive travel, and employment decisions.

Nothing had changed.

That was what made the silence difficult.

I had wanted some new information to arrive.

Something I could act upon.

Something that would tell me whether the matter was becoming more serious or beginning to settle.

Instead, I had the same document and the same unanswered questions.

I looked at my phone.

The screen was dark.

I didn't touch it.

That was becoming a discipline rather than a decision.

Every few minutes, I felt the urge to check.

Then I remembered what checking would accomplish.

Nothing.

Claire hadn't answered the twenty-seven calls I made that morning.

She hadn't answered the additional call I placed after Michael showed me the email.

I had no reason to believe another attempt would change her mind.

Yet I wanted to make one.

That bothered me.

I had spent so many years confusing persistence with concern.

I told myself that if I kept trying to reach someone, it proved how much they mattered.

But I knew that wasn't always true.

Sometimes persistence was simply another way of refusing to accept a boundary.

I had ignored too many of Claire's boundaries already.

I didn't want to turn her silence into another one.

I leaned back in my chair.

The office felt unusually still.

There were ordinary sounds beyond the door, but none of them required my attention.

I had work in front of me.

I couldn't concentrate on it.

My thoughts kept returning to the same question.

What did Claire know?

It was a selfish question.

I recognized that now.

I didn't begin by wondering whether she was frightened.

I didn't begin by considering whether she felt relieved to have professional help.

I wanted to know what information she had gathered and what she intended to do with it.

I wanted to know how exposed I was.

There was no honest way to make that concern sound noble.

I looked at the email.

The request was formal.

It was specific.

It had been directed toward the board rather than toward me personally.

I had already understood those things.

But I still found myself searching for something hidden between the lines.

A threat.

A warning.

An invitation to negotiate.

Something that would tell me how to respond.

I found none.

The document said what it said.

It asked that certain records be preserved.

I had no basis for making it into something else.

I thought about Michael.

He had been careful when explaining the request.

At first, that had annoyed me.

Now I understood why he had refused to speculate.

He wasn't there to tell me what Claire felt.

He wasn't there to predict what Nathan Brooks would do.

He was there to bring me information that affected the company.

I had wanted him to serve a different purpose.

I had wanted reassurance.

Looking back, that was another example of how I treated people when I was frightened.

I expected them to make my discomfort smaller.

Even when the discomfort came from my own choices.

I picked up the email.

The corner was still bent.

I had stopped trying to straighten it.

That small change reminded me how much time I had spent adjusting the paper rather than accepting what was written on it.

I read the section concerning executive travel.

I couldn't determine from the request which expenses might become relevant.

The document didn't identify them.

I knew better than to invent details.

But the subject remained uncomfortable.

Travel records belonged to the kind of information a company could review.

They weren't private feelings.

They weren't memories that changed depending on who described them.

They were records.

That distinction mattered.

I thought about the way I had handled difficult conversations with Claire.

I could argue about intentions.

I could insist something had been misunderstood.

I could suggest that she remembered an event differently.

Those habits had protected me from uncomfortable admissions.

They wouldn't settle questions about existing documents.

I placed the email down.

I could see why Nathan Brooks's involvement frightened me.

His reputation concerned difficult cases where facts and financial information mattered.

He had worked with executives.

He had uncovered concealed assets.

He had helped bring a prominent investment firm to a settlement it had once refused to consider.

I remembered those things because they were exactly the sort of stories people in Boston business circles repeated.

They were warnings disguised as professional gossip.

I had listened to them with interest when the problems belonged to other people.

Now the name was connected to Claire.

I didn't know what Nathan intended to do.

But I knew I could no longer dismiss her decision as a temporary emotional reaction.

I put my hands on the desk.

For a moment, I wanted to call Michael back.

I wanted to ask whether he had heard anything further.

Then I stopped.

He had already told me what he knew.

If there was new information, that would be different.

But I wasn't seeking new information.

I was seeking someone to sit with my uncertainty.

That wasn't Michael's responsibility.

I looked at the phone again.

I wondered how often Claire had waited for me to call when I knew she was upset.

I couldn't count those moments.

That was part of the shame.

I had not considered them important enough to remember.

I remembered my own frustration clearly.

I remembered feeling inconvenienced when she wanted answers.

I remembered wanting uncomfortable discussions to end.

But her waiting had seemed ordinary to me.

Something she could manage on her own.

Now a single afternoon of uncertainty had left me restless.

The imbalance was ugly.

I couldn't avoid seeing it.

I leaned forward.

I whispered something I had been reluctant to say even to myself.

"I was unfair to her."

The office remained silent.

Of course it did.

Admitting something aloud didn't create an audience.

It didn't repair anything.

It simply made it harder to pretend I hadn't understood.

I thought about the word unfair.

It sounded too small.

Three years of infidelity and humiliation deserved stronger language.

But I wasn't interested in making a dramatic speech to an empty room.

I wanted to stop hiding behind softer explanations.

I had betrayed Claire.

Repeatedly.

I had acted as though her loyalty required no loyalty in return.

That was the truth.

I looked at my phone.

The screen remained dark.

I imagined her answering.

I imagined hearing her say my name.

For a moment, I felt the old impulse rise.

Explain.

Persuade.

Make her understand my side.

Then I realized how strange that was.

I had spent years expecting Claire to understand my side while barely trying to understand hers.

Now I wanted another opportunity to speak.

I still didn't know whether I was ready to listen.

That admission made me leave the phone alone.

I turned back to the email.

The request had not changed.

My marriage had not been repaired.

The company-related questions had not been settled.

But I was beginning to understand something that had escaped me for years.

Waiting wasn't always a problem someone else was obligated to solve.

Sometimes it was simply the consequence of having lost another person's trust.

I had spent three years giving Claire reasons not to trust me.

Now I had to accept that she might take whatever time she needed.

I couldn't hurry her.

I couldn't demand reassurance.

I couldn't make her attorney disappear because his involvement embarrassed me.

All I could do was stop pretending that my discomfort created an obligation for her.

I picked up the document one last time.

I read the request without searching for hidden meanings.

Then I placed it back on the desk.

I didn't call Claire.

I didn't call Michael.

I sat with the facts I had.

It wasn't forgiveness.

It wasn't resolution.

It wasn't even progress that anyone else could see.

But I had finally stopped expecting Claire to carry my uncertainty for me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Michael Had Given Me the Facts, but I Kept Wanting Him to Explain What Claire
