11 – The More I Thought About Jasmine and the Company Records, the Harder It Became to Hide Behind the Word Private

I had used the word private for years.

Private conversations.

Private mistakes.

Private problems between a husband and wife.

It was a useful word.

It made other people's questions seem intrusive.

It made my own conduct appear to belong to a place nobody else had the right to examine.

I liked that.

I liked it far too much.

Now Nathan Brooks's preservation request was forcing me to think about what the word actually meant.

My marriage was private in many ways.

Claire and I had shared a relationship that didn't belong to the board.

Our personal feelings weren't company records.

Our arguments weren't business decisions.

But the request didn't ask the board to examine the emotional history of our marriage.

It concerned company resources.

Executive travel.

Employment and compensation decisions involving Jasmine Cole.

Those were different subjects.

I knew that.

I had known it when Michael explained the request.

I had simply resisted admitting it.

I looked down at the printed email.

My thumb rested against the bent corner.

I flattened it again.

Then I stopped.

I had been doing that repeatedly.

Straightening the paper.

Aligning it with the desk.

Moving my phone beside it.

I couldn't control Claire's decisions, so I kept arranging the objects in front of me.

It was a small, ridiculous habit.

I noticed it and let the corner remain bent.

The paper didn't need fixing.

My thinking did.

I read the part about personal use of company resources.

I couldn't tell from that phrase which records Nathan considered relevant.

The request didn't explain.

It simply identified the subject.

I had no basis for deciding that the category was meaningless.

I also had no basis for concluding that every record would prove improper conduct.

I needed to stop swinging between those extremes.

Either the request was nothing.

Or it meant disaster.

I kept moving between those positions because both allowed me to avoid careful thought.

The first gave me comfort.

The second gave me an excuse to panic.

Neither helped me understand the facts.

I turned to the language about travel expenses.

Executive travel was an ordinary part of corporate life.

It could be legitimate.

It could be documented.

It could be reviewed.

Nothing about that general reality surprised me.

What surprised me was how personally I reacted to the possibility that my own expenses might be examined.

I wanted to ask why Claire had any interest in them.

Then I remembered that the request came from her attorney.

The question wasn't whether I liked the inquiry.

It was whether the relevant records should be preserved.

I understood that distinction.

I had been resisting it because it removed my ability to end the matter with a personal explanation.

I looked at Jasmine's name.

That was still the hardest part of the page to read.

I knew she was connected to the affair.

I knew her name carried meaning in my marriage.

I had chosen not to think deeply about how those choices affected Claire.

Now I was being asked to confront a different aspect of the situation.

Employment and compensation.

The request didn't tell me which decisions Nathan wished to examine.

I didn't want to invent details.

I couldn't fairly conclude something had happened simply because the category was included.

But I also couldn't pretend that decisions involving Jasmine were beyond scrutiny merely because I found the subject embarrassing.

I sat still.

For a long time, I had believed I could control how different people understood me.

At work, I wanted to be seen as competent.

With Claire, I wanted to be seen as a husband who had made regrettable but manageable mistakes.

With Jasmine, I had allowed myself to behave in ways that contradicted the loyalty I owed my wife.

I kept those images apart.

That separation made it easier to avoid responsibility.

I told myself each part of my life operated by its own rules.

But I was the same person in every one of them.

The decisions were mine.

The consequences didn't have to remain separate simply because I preferred them that way.

I looked toward the empty chair again.

I remembered telling Michael that the matter was between Claire and me.

I had sounded offended.

As though the company had no possible reason to preserve records concerning company matters.

I recognized the arrogance now.

I had been asking for an exemption.

Not from an accusation.

From scrutiny itself.

I thought about how I would have responded if another executive demanded the same thing.

If someone insisted that records shouldn't be examined because the questions had arisen from a marriage problem.

I would have wanted a better explanation.

I would have asked which records were relevant.

I would have wanted the company's responsibilities respected.

That was how I thought when my own conduct wasn't involved.

I needed to apply the same standard to myself.

The thought made me uncomfortable.

I wasn't accustomed to feeling uncertain about my professional judgment.

I had made a habit of trusting it.

But judgment isn't reliable when a person refuses to acknowledge his own interests.

Mine were obvious.

I wanted to protect my reputation.

I wanted to avoid embarrassment.

I wanted to keep Claire's attorney from examining anything that might raise difficult questions.

Recognizing those desires didn't make the inquiry improper.

It simply made my position less impartial than I had pretended.

I placed the email flat.

Then I leaned back and closed my eyes briefly.

I thought about three years of humiliating Claire.

I didn't need to invent a new scene to know the broad truth of what I had done.

I had been unfaithful.

I had continued.

I had allowed her to suffer the disrespect.

Those facts were already enough to explain why our marriage had become damaged.

Whatever happened with the company records was another matter.

I needed to stop using uncertainty about that matter to soften the certainty of the first.

I had betrayed my wife.

Whether any company-related concern was substantiated would have to be established separately.

One did not automatically prove the other.

I understood that.

And for the first time, I found some relief in being precise.

Not relief from responsibility.

Relief from the frantic guessing I had been doing.

I could acknowledge the harm I knew I had caused.

I could take the formal request seriously.

I could accept that I didn't know the outcome.

Those things could all be true.

I didn't have to invent a defense before anyone asked me a question.

I didn't have to accuse Claire of bad motives.

I didn't have to decide that Nathan was trying to destroy me.

I could simply stop pretending that my discomfort settled the issue.

I opened my eyes.

The phone remained silent.

I wasn't surprised anymore.

Claire had made her choice about communication, at least for the time being.

I had no right to override it.

I thought again about how many times I'd called.

Twenty-seven attempts that morning.

Then another while Michael watched.

I had behaved as if persistence alone entitled me to a conversation.

I no longer believed that.

I still wanted to hear Claire's voice.

I wanted it badly.

But I had finally begun to separate wanting something from deserving it.

I looked at the page one more time.

I didn't turn it over.

I didn't put it away.

I left it visible.

There was nothing dramatic about that.

No sudden revelation.

No answer from Claire.

No decision from the board.

But I had stopped using the word private as though it could erase questions about company records.

And I had stopped using the existence of those questions as a reason to ignore the betrayal that came before them.

For the first time, I could hold both truths in my mind without trying to make one cancel the other.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Had Spent Three Years Assuming Claire
