10 – I Wanted Michael to Tell Me How to Protect Myself, but I Was Beginning to Hear How Little Concern I Had Shown Claire

I had spent most of my adult life believing that a difficult situation could be handled if I asked the right questions.

That belief had served me well at work.

It had served my marriage badly.

With Claire, I had rarely asked questions because I genuinely wanted to understand her.

I asked them to discover how much trouble I was in.

Or how soon an argument might end.

Or whether she had decided to forgive something I hadn't properly apologized for.

Now I was sitting with another set of questions.

And the old habit was returning.

I wanted to know how to protect myself.

That was the truth.

I could make the concern sound professional.

I could talk about the board.

Company procedures.

Records.

Legal responsibilities.

Those subjects mattered.

But I also knew that my strongest feeling was fear.

Fear that the image I had built of myself might not survive careful examination.

I looked at the email.

Nathan Brooks had asked for records relating to several defined subjects.

He hadn't asked the board to decide whether I had been a good husband.

He hadn't sent me a personal accusation.

He had taken a formal step that might allow relevant information to remain available.

That was what Michael had explained.

I thought about how impatiently I had responded.

I had wanted him to say that Claire was threatening me.

I had wanted the matter described in a way that made me the injured party.

That bothered me now.

I had caused harm.

Then, when Claire acted independently, I wanted to treat her action as the offense.

I recognized the pattern.

It was the same one I had relied on during our marriage.

When Claire became upset, I focused on her reaction.

I didn't want to discuss what had caused it.

If she spoke firmly, I complained about her manner.

If she stopped speaking, I complained about the silence.

Either way, I found a reason to be dissatisfied with her.

And either way, I avoided looking too closely at myself.

I had once considered that clever.

I wasn't proud of it now.

I picked up the page.

The paper felt thin between my fingers.

It carried no emotional language.

There was no description of Claire crying.

No account of our arguments.

No explanation of what she had endured.

Yet I couldn't read it without remembering the marriage behind it.

That was something I hadn't expected.

I had thought a lawyer's involvement would make the situation colder.

More distant.

More concerned with documents than with people.

Instead, the document reminded me that Claire had reached a point where she was no longer asking me directly for what she needed.

I didn't know why she'd chosen Nathan.

I couldn't claim to understand their conversations.

But I could see the result.

She had sought professional representation.

She had taken action outside the private arguments that had gone nowhere.

And I had been surprised.

That surprise revealed how little I had considered her options.

I had behaved as though the only choices available to Claire were to remain silent or confront me.

I hadn't considered that she might choose a path I didn't control.

The thought left me uneasy.

I looked toward the empty chair where Michael had sat.

I remembered his expression.

He had looked uncertain in a way I had rarely seen.

I had assumed his discomfort meant the situation was dangerous for me.

Perhaps it did.

But I couldn't know exactly what he had been thinking.

I had a habit of turning other people's expressions into evidence for whatever I already feared.

Michael's caution didn't prove that I was guilty of a company violation.

It didn't prove that Nathan had uncovered anything.

It proved only that Michael was taking the formal request seriously.

I needed to learn how to stop there.

That was harder than it sounded.

I was accustomed to drawing conclusions quickly.

At work, decisiveness had often been useful.

In my marriage, it had allowed me to decide what Claire meant without asking her.

I had decided that her silence meant acceptance.

I had decided that her patience meant weakness.

I had decided that she would never do anything I couldn't manage.

Every one of those assumptions had made it easier to continue hurting her.

I put the email down.

I felt tired.

Not physically.

I was tired of hearing my own excuses.

For three years, I had made them sound reasonable.

Sometimes I spoke them aloud.

Sometimes I kept them to myself.

But I had repeated them so often that they became familiar.

I told myself I was under pressure.

I told myself the marriage was complicated.

I told myself I would eventually sort everything out.

I didn't.

I continued.

And Claire lived with what I refused to face.

I reached for my phone.

Then I remembered the call history.

Twenty-seven attempts that morning.

Another call after Michael showed me the request.

Each one had been an effort to get Claire to respond.

None had been accompanied by evidence that I understood why she might not want to.

I looked at the screen without opening it.

What would I say now?

"Claire, I understand."

But I didn't understand everything.

"Claire, I'm sorry."

That might be true.

It would also be terribly late.

"Claire, please call me."

That would place another request on someone I had already asked to endure too much.

I set the phone down.

I wasn't ready to have a conversation that wasn't primarily about my fear.

Admitting that felt ugly.

It was also necessary.

I had spent years speaking before I understood what I wanted to say.

Sometimes I spoke simply to stop Claire from speaking.

Sometimes I apologized to end an argument.

Sometimes I promised change because the promise was easier than the change itself.

I didn't want to repeat that pattern now.

I looked again at Nathan's name.

His reputation had frightened me.

I remembered the business dispute involving the investment firm that had resisted settlement.

I remembered how people had spoken about his ability to handle difficult financial cases.

Those memories had made me take the request seriously.

And that realization brought another wave of shame.

It had taken a respected attorney to make me pay attention to concerns my wife had every reason to raise.

Claire had spent three years living with my choices.

Nathan Brooks had been involved for an amount of time I didn't know.

Yet I had shown more immediate respect for the attorney's name than for my wife's pain.

I couldn't excuse that.

I folded my hands on the desk.

The email lay between them.

I wondered whether Michael had noticed that change in me.

Then I dismissed the question.

His opinion was not the point.

I didn't need another person to tell me I was ashamed.

I knew it.

And I didn't need that shame to become another performance.

I had no reason to expect Claire to forgive me because I finally understood something basic.

Understanding didn't undo what happened.

It didn't restore three years.

It didn't remove Jasmine from the story.

It didn't settle whatever questions Nathan's request might lead to.

I looked toward the office door.

There were still decisions to make about my response to the formal matter.

I couldn't ignore it.

But I could stop treating it as an excuse to avoid responsibility for my marriage.

Those were separate things.

The board would have to deal with the request according to its obligations.

I would have to deal with my own conduct honestly.

I couldn't replace one with the other.

I sat back.

For the first time, the thought of speaking to Claire made me consider what she might need from the conversation.

Not what I needed.

Not what answer would make me feel safe.

What she might need.

I didn't know.

That ignorance hurt.

It should have.

I had been married to her while paying so little attention to the things I didn't want to hear.

Now I had to accept that I couldn't repair that failure by guessing.

If Claire ever chose to speak with me, I would need to listen without deciding in advance what she meant.

I would need to answer honestly.

I would need to stop treating her feelings as obstacles.

Those were simple obligations.

They weren't extraordinary.

They were things I should have done long before Nathan Brooks's name appeared on my desk.

I looked at my phone.

I didn't call.

The silence remained.

But I had finally stopped trying to make Claire responsible for ending it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The More I Thought About Jasmine and the Company Records, the Harder It Became to
