9 – I Finally Stopped Calling Claire, But the Questions I Had Avoided for Three Years Were Still Waiting on My Desk

I used to think admitting I was wrong would make me feel better.

It didn't.

Not that afternoon.

Not with Claire's lawyer's request sitting in front of me.

Not with Jasmine Cole's name printed among the matters the board had been asked to preserve.

I had finally admitted something I should have understood years earlier.

Claire hadn't betrayed me by seeking legal help.

I had betrayed her.

It was a simple truth.

I could say it without struggling.

But knowing it didn't tell me what to do next.

I sat in my office and looked at the phone.

I had stopped calling.

That was the one decision I had managed to keep.

The screen remained dark.

No message.

No missed call.

No explanation from Claire.

I wanted to reach for it again.

I didn't.

Instead, I looked at the printed email.

The paper was beginning to bend at one corner.

I had handled it so often that the edge no longer lay flat.

I pressed it down with my thumb.

Then I caught myself doing it.

I was trying to fix a small crease while avoiding a problem that had taken three years to create.

That realization made me put my hands in my lap.

I had always been good at dealing with the visible part of a problem.

A difficult conversation could be postponed.

An awkward question could be redirected.

A tense silence could be interrupted with something practical.

I knew how to make a situation look calmer.

That wasn't the same as making it better.

Claire had known the difference.

I suspected she'd known it for a long time.

I didn't know when she had stopped believing my explanations.

I didn't know when she had decided that another conversation with me would accomplish nothing.

I couldn't identify the moment when she had chosen to contact Nathan Brooks.

Those were things I wanted to know.

But I couldn't pretend that the answers would change what I had done.

Three years.

That number continued to trouble me.

Three years was long enough to recognize a pattern.

Long enough to understand the harm.

Long enough to make a different choice.

I hadn't.

I kept returning to that fact because every explanation I considered eventually led back to it.

I could describe my marriage as unhappy.

I could say I had become careless.

I could talk about confusion or distance.

None of those words explained why I had allowed Claire to be humiliated.

They only made the story easier for me to tell.

I looked toward the door Michael had used earlier.

He had left me with the document.

He hadn't told me what Claire was planning.

He hadn't offered his opinion about whether my marriage could survive.

He had answered the questions he could answer.

At the time, I had resented that.

Now I appreciated it.

His restraint had forced me to separate facts from assumptions.

The distinction mattered more than I wanted it to.

The facts were limited.

Claire had retained Nathan Brooks.

Her attorney had asked the board to preserve records.

Those records concerned possible personal use of company resources, executive travel spending, and employment or compensation decisions involving Jasmine.

The request didn't explain what Claire knew.

It didn't establish wrongdoing.

It didn't tell me what would happen next.

I understood all of that.

Yet I kept trying to read an outcome into the paper.

Sometimes I imagined the matter ending quietly.

Sometimes I imagined difficult questions being asked.

Sometimes I pictured Claire deciding she never wanted to speak to me again.

Those were fears.

They weren't facts.

I had to keep reminding myself.

I picked up a pen.

For a moment, I considered writing down the questions I wanted to ask Michael.

I placed the point against a blank sheet.

Nothing came.

I knew the questions already.

What did the request require?

What records were involved?

What would the board do?

Those were legitimate concerns.

But beneath them was another question.

How much of my life could be examined without my being able to control the explanation?

I didn't write that one down.

I was embarrassed by it.

I had spent so long protecting my reputation that I scarcely knew how to think about accountability without treating it as an attack.

I expected other people to answer questions about decisions they made at work.

I expected them to be accurate.

I expected them to understand the difference between an explanation and an excuse.

Now similar questions might be asked about me.

And I felt offended.

I rubbed my eyes.

It wasn't a flattering discovery.

I thought about Jasmine.

I had spent years keeping her and Claire in separate parts of my mind.

I told myself that separation made things manageable.

It actually allowed me to avoid considering how one relationship was affecting the other.

Now Jasmine's name appeared in the same document as my executive responsibilities.

I could no longer pretend that everything existed in neat compartments.

I read that portion again.

Employment.

Compensation.

The request did not explain what specific decisions were at issue.

I wasn't entitled to invent an explanation simply because I wanted one.

But the inclusion of those matters was enough to make me consider how seriously Claire's lawyer was approaching the situation.

I placed the pen beside the email.

For a while, I listened to the ordinary sounds beyond my office.

Someone speaking in the distance.

Footsteps passing.

A door closing.

Nothing dramatic.

The company continued operating while I sat there wondering what would become of my reputation.

That should have reminded me that the world was larger than my personal crisis.

Instead, I felt strangely alone.

I had created much of that loneliness myself.

I knew it.

For years, I had assumed Claire would always be available when I wanted to speak.

I had not offered her the same consideration.

When she needed honesty, I gave her excuses.

When she needed respect, I gave her humiliation.

When she needed me to take her pain seriously, I treated it as another difficult conversation I hoped would end.

Now I wanted the reassurance I had so often denied her.

The unfairness was impossible to miss.

I turned my phone facedown.

I didn't want to watch the screen.

I didn't want another hour to become a contest between my impatience and her silence.

If Claire wanted to speak, she knew how to reach me.

That thought was simple.

It was also difficult to accept.

I had always preferred decisions that left me with something to do.

Call someone.

Arrange something.

Demand an answer.

Take charge.

Leaving another person free to decide whether to respond felt unfamiliar.

But Claire was entitled to that freedom.

I had taken far too long to recognize it.

I returned my attention to the email.

There was no way to undo its arrival.

There was also no honest reason to pretend I hadn't read it.

I couldn't erase the concerns it raised by describing them as private.

I couldn't dismiss Nathan Brooks merely because he represented my wife.

And I couldn't keep assuming that Michael would protect me from facts I found uncomfortable.

I folded the blank sheet beneath the document.

The page remained empty.

I hadn't written any questions.

Perhaps I would later.

For now, I understood that I needed to stop asking questions whose only purpose was to make me feel safer.

I needed to face what was actually in front of me.

Not everything I feared.

Not everything I wished.

Just the facts.

I looked at Claire's name on my phone one last time.

Then I turned away.

I didn't know whether she would ever explain her silence.

But I knew I had no right to demand an explanation before I was willing to confront my own behavior.

The unanswered calls were no longer the problem I needed to solve first.

<a
