8 – The Name Nathan Brooks Frightened Me More Than Any Argument Claire Had Ever Made, and I Finally Understood Why

I had spent years believing that the worst thing Claire could do was leave me.

That belief had shaped the way I treated our marriage.

If she stayed, I assumed I still had a chance to make everything seem normal.

If she became quiet, I assumed the argument was finished.

If she didn't confront me, I assumed she was willing to endure the situation.

I was wrong about all three.

Now I sat in my office with a printed email that gave me no direct statement about what Claire intended for our marriage.

And that uncertainty frightened me more than an argument would have.

An argument gave me something to answer.

A demand gave me something to negotiate.

An accusation gave me something to deny.

The email did something different.

It established that Claire had legal representation.

It asked the board to preserve records.

It named matters involving my conduct and Jasmine Cole.

And it gave me no opportunity to redirect the conversation.

I kept thinking about Nathan Brooks.

I knew his reputation.

I knew the kind of cases associated with his name.

I knew he had helped expose concealed financial information in disputes where the parties had powerful reasons to keep matters private.

Those facts didn't tell me what he intended to do for Claire.

But they told me why I should not dismiss the request.

I looked at the page again.

I had stopped counting how many times I had read it.

The words were familiar now.

That familiarity hadn't made them harmless.

I reached for my phone.

Then I pulled my hand back.

I was beginning to understand that the phone had become a way for me to avoid thinking.

Whenever a difficult question formed, I wanted to call Claire.

Not necessarily to listen.

Often, I wanted to make her answer the question for me.

Why had she hired Nathan?

Why had she chosen those records?

Why wasn't she speaking to me?

I wanted her to make my uncertainty disappear.

I had expected that of her for years.

I asked myself what I would say if she finally answered.

I imagined hearing her voice.

I imagined asking whether she had received my messages.

I imagined telling her that Michael had shown me the email.

Then my thoughts reached the part I didn't want to face.

I would have to explain myself.

Not simply ask her to explain her actions.

I would have to answer questions about my own.

That was harder.

I could no longer pretend that Jasmine was irrelevant.

I could no longer speak about the marriage as though Claire and I had contributed equally to every problem.

I couldn't honestly describe three years of infidelity as a misunderstanding.

Those facts were mine.

I had to carry them.

I looked at the wall beyond my desk.

For a while, I let myself remember the confidence I had felt before Michael entered with the document.

I had believed that if Claire remained silent long enough, I could eventually persuade her to speak.

I thought I had time.

I thought I knew how she would react.

I thought being her husband meant I understood the limits of what she might do.

Now I knew very little.

And I had no right to demand that she restore my confidence.

I heard movement outside the office.

Ordinary footsteps.

A door opening somewhere.

The company went on with its day.

I found that strangely difficult to accept.

My thoughts kept circling one problem, but the world had not stopped.

Michael still had responsibilities.

The board had its own obligations.

Claire had made a decision I could not undo.

Nathan Brooks had sent a request that existed independently of whether I liked it.

The only person sitting still was me.

I looked down at the paper.

For the first time, I tried to read it as though it concerned someone else.

An executive.

A spouse.

An affair involving a person whose employment and compensation were now subjects of inquiry.

A request to preserve company records.

If Michael had shown me that document with another man's name on it, I knew what I would have said.

I would have told him to take it seriously.

I would have told him not to assume it was harmless.

I would have wanted the facts established before anyone reached a conclusion.

I might even have wondered why the executive seemed so eager to describe the matter as private.

That realization embarrassed me.

I had wanted a different standard because the name on the paper was mine.

I sat back.

The office felt less comfortable than it had earlier.

Nothing physical had changed.

The desk was the same.

The chair was the same.

The phone lay beside the same printed email.

But I could no longer look at those things without remembering my own reactions.

The first thing I had done was laugh.

I had asked whether Claire was trying to frighten me.

Then I had learned Nathan's name.

The laughter had stopped.

That sequence bothered me.

It showed how quickly my confidence depended on the seriousness of the opposition.

I had treated Claire's concerns as manageable while I believed she was acting alone.

Once a respected attorney became involved, I began listening.

I felt ashamed of that.

Claire's pain should have mattered before anyone else put it into formal language.

Her humiliation should have mattered before the board was contacted.

My conduct should have mattered before I wondered what records might exist.

But I had waited until consequences threatened my reputation.

Only then had I begun to pay attention.

I knew that wasn't a flattering admission.

It was still true.

I looked again at Jasmine's name.

I couldn't pretend that the affair was something separate from the person I had become.

It had been a choice.

Repeated.

Protected by excuses.

Sustained partly because I assumed Claire would endure it.

I didn't know what Nathan would eventually make of the documents he wanted preserved.

I didn't know what questions might come next.

I didn't know whether Claire would agree to speak with me.

And I didn't know how the board would respond beyond the information Michael had given me.

Those were real limits.

I needed to accept them.

Inventing answers would only allow me to keep living inside my own assumptions.

I had done enough of that.

I picked up the email one more time.

My eyes moved over the language concerning company resources.

Then travel expenses.

Then employment and compensation decisions involving Jasmine.

I didn't skip anything.

I didn't make a joke.

I didn't call it a threat.

I simply read it.

When I finished, I put the paper down.

I thought about Claire.

Not about what she might do to me.

About what I had done to her.

It was uncomfortable to hold that thought without turning it back toward myself.

I tried.

Three years.

I had expected her to continue making room for my behavior.

I had treated her silence as convenience.

I had humiliated her and then behaved as though the absence of an argument made the humiliation smaller.

I had given myself the benefit of every possible excuse.

And I had given her almost none.

Now she had chosen a course of action that I hadn't expected.

I could be frightened by it.

I could wonder what it meant.

I could seek accurate information about the request.

But I could not reasonably insist that she return to the role I had assigned her.

The quiet wife.

The patient wife.

The wife who waited until I was ready to explain.

I realized how little I had understood about her.

That truth was painful.

It wasn't yet a complete understanding of Claire.

I still didn't know what she wanted.

But I had begun to see the arrogance in assuming I did.

I reached for my phone.

This time, I didn't open the call history.

I left it on the desk.

There was nothing useful in counting my unanswered calls again.

The number would not tell me what Claire was thinking.

It would only remind me how desperately I had tried to reach her once I discovered that she was acting without my permission.

I turned back to the email.

Michael had said it was a formal preservation request.

That was the fact I needed to deal with.

Not the story I preferred.

Not the motive I wanted to assign to Claire.

Not the reassurance I had hoped Michael would provide.

The request itself.

I straightened the paper.

Then I stopped touching it.

I had made a decision.

I would treat the matter seriously instead of trying to dismiss it.

I would stop confusing my fear with evidence that Claire had done something wrong.

And I would not pretend that the damage to our marriage began when Nathan Brooks contacted the board.

It had begun long before that.

With choices I made.

With things I concealed.

With the humiliation I allowed Claire to suffer.

I was still frightened.

I still wanted answers.

I still wished I could hear her voice.

But I had finally understood one thing that didn't depend on another phone call.

Claire's decision to seek legal help was not the betrayal that had brought us here.

Mine was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Finally Stopped Calling Claire, But the Questions I Had
