7 – I Had Always Known How to Protect My Reputation, But I Couldn’t Explain Why Jasmine’s Name Was in Claire’s Legal Request

I knew what people expected from me at work.

They expected decisions.

They expected clear answers.

They expected me to understand the responsibilities attached to my position.

For a long time, I had taken pride in meeting those expectations.

That pride was part of how I saw myself.

A capable man.

A respected executive.

Someone who could handle difficult situations.

I liked that description.

It allowed me to overlook how differently I behaved in my marriage.

I could be patient during a complicated business conversation.

Then I could go home and treat Claire's questions as an annoyance.

I could insist on accuracy when discussing company matters.

Then I could avoid telling my wife the truth about Jasmine.

I had built two versions of myself.

One I respected.

One I rarely examined.

Now Nathan Brooks's request was forcing those versions closer together.

I didn't want them to meet.

The email remained on my desk.

I had read it enough times to remember its main points.

But one line continued to trouble me.

Jasmine Cole.

Not because I was surprised Claire knew her name.

I wasn't.

The name itself belonged to the betrayal I had carried through our marriage.

What disturbed me was how it appeared in the request.

It was tied to employment and compensation decisions.

Those were business matters.

They were the sort of decisions a company could examine through records rather than personal recollections.

I knew that as well as anyone.

I looked at the paper again.

The request didn't explain which decisions Claire questioned.

It didn't present findings.

It didn't say that a particular act had occurred.

It simply asked that the relevant records be kept.

I wanted to dismiss that as excessive.

I wanted to say Claire was bringing my personal life into the company to hurt me.

But I knew that my opinion about her motives wouldn't answer any questions about the records.

That was the difficulty.

For years, I had relied on explaining why Claire was upset.

I had not spent nearly enough time examining why she had reason to be.

I remembered the way Michael had said Nathan's name.

Quietly.

Without trying to make it dramatic.

He hadn't needed to.

The name carried its own meaning.

Nathan Brooks was known in Boston for handling difficult cases involving money, business relationships, and disputes between people who had once trusted one another.

He had represented executives.

He had uncovered concealed assets.

He had helped bring a powerful investment firm to a settlement after it insisted it would never agree to one.

I knew those things.

I had heard enough about his work to understand that he was not someone hired merely to deliver an angry message.

That knowledge made me uneasy.

I hadn't expected Claire to turn to an attorney with that kind of experience.

I had expected something smaller.

A demand that I explain myself.

A threat to leave.

Perhaps an argument about what our marriage had become.

Those expectations revealed how little respect I had given her judgment.

I had imagined her reactions according to what would be easiest for me to manage.

I had not considered that she might decide to stop asking me for permission to be taken seriously.

I leaned back in my chair.

The thought left me uncomfortable.

I didn't suddenly understand every choice Claire had made.

But I understood that I had underestimated her.

And I had done it repeatedly.

I reached toward the phone.

I had no reason to expect a message.

Still, I looked.

Nothing.

That absence was becoming familiar.

I almost called again.

Almost.

Then I remembered how many times I had already tried.

I put the phone down.

The silence didn't grow easier.

I simply stopped pretending that repeated calls would make it end.

I wondered whether Nathan had advised Claire not to answer me.

That seemed possible.

It also seemed possible that she had made the decision herself.

I had no way of knowing.

I recognized how quickly I was turning a possibility into a story that comforted me.

If Nathan had instructed her to remain silent, I could tell myself someone else was keeping us apart.

That would make my position easier.

I could blame a lawyer.

I could blame formal procedures.

I could blame the way everything had become complicated.

I wouldn't have to acknowledge that Claire might simply not want to speak to me.

I sat with that thought.

It was an unpleasant one.

I had always assumed that my wife would remain available when I wanted her.

Even after I had made her feel unimportant.

Even after I had allowed her to be humiliated.

Even after I had continued seeing Jasmine.

I had somehow believed that my need for a conversation should settle the matter.

Now I was facing the simplest possible refusal.

No answer.

No argument.

No chance to talk over her.

Just silence.

I picked up the email.

The paper had begun to show small bends where I had handled it.

I smoothed it with my palm.

The gesture reminded me of the way I had tried to smooth over my marriage.

Pressing down whatever looked untidy.

Making things appear normal.

Ignoring the damage underneath.

I had been more concerned with appearances than with the truth.

I could see that now.

But seeing it didn't remove the consequences.

I looked again at the three categories in the request.

Personal use of company resources.

Executive travel.

Jasmine's employment and compensation.

I could not fairly conclude from the request alone that any specific policy had been violated.

That would require facts beyond what the paper provided.

But I couldn't fairly conclude the questions were meaningless either.

I had been hoping to do exactly that.

To dismiss them before anyone examined the information.

I realized how badly I wanted the benefit of assumptions I would never have accepted from someone else.

At work, I expected people to support their statements.

I wanted records.

I wanted explanations.

I wanted evidence before making serious decisions.

Now someone was asking for records concerning me.

And I resented the question.

The hypocrisy was obvious.

I folded my hands.

For a while, I stared at them.

I wondered what Michael would say if I asked him whether I was handling this badly.

Then I laughed quietly.

I already knew the answer.

I had spent the afternoon seeking reassurance instead of understanding.

I had called Claire again despite twenty-seven failed attempts.

I had looked at a preservation request and immediately wondered how to make it stop.

I hadn't begun by asking what responsibility I might bear.

I had begun by asking whether someone was threatening me.

That was the man I had become.

Not a man who never recognized right from wrong.

A man who recognized it clearly when it concerned other people.

And found exceptions when it concerned himself.

I picked up the paper again.

I had no way to change the fact that Claire's lawyer had contacted the board.

I also had no honest reason to call that contact meaningless.

I placed the page flat on the desk.

The next time I spoke with Michael, I wouldn't ask him to tell me that Claire was overreacting.

I would ask him what the request actually required.

It was a modest decision.

It didn't repair my marriage.

It didn't undo three years of betrayal.

It didn't settle any question about Jasmine.

But it was the first time I had chosen not to begin with an excuse.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Name Nathan Brooks Frightened Me
