6 – I Kept Searching the Request for an Accusation I Could Fight, But Claire’s Lawyer Had Asked for Something Else Entirely

The next time I read Nathan Brooks's request, I noticed what bothered me most.

It wasn't an accusation.

At least, not in the direct way I had expected.

It was a request to keep information available.

That difference made it harder to dismiss.

I was prepared to argue about whether Claire had exaggerated my behavior.

I was prepared to insist that our marriage was a private matter.

I was even prepared to say she had misunderstood something.

But the document didn't ask me to debate her feelings.

It asked the board to preserve records.

I sat with that for a while.

The word preserve kept catching my attention.

It was simple.

Almost harmless.

A word that belonged in ordinary conversations about keeping things safe.

Here, it carried a different meaning.

It meant certain information might matter later.

It meant someone wanted that information kept intact.

It meant Claire and her attorney were not depending on my willingness to describe events accurately.

That realization was uncomfortable.

I had spent years deciding which parts of my behavior I would acknowledge.

I admitted enough to quiet an argument.

I avoided whatever seemed likely to make the argument worse.

I told myself I wasn't lying if I simply chose not to discuss something.

Looking back, that reasoning was embarrassing.

I had confused withholding information with protecting my marriage.

Mostly, I had been protecting myself.

Now a lawyer was asking for records that would exist independently of my explanations.

I couldn't tell a travel record that it was overreacting.

I couldn't persuade a document that the timing was inconvenient.

I couldn't accuse an expense entry of being emotional.

I laughed at that thought.

Not because it was funny.

Because I finally understood how much of my behavior depended on dismissing the person asking questions.

With Claire, I had been able to make an argument feel personal.

If she pressed me, I treated her persistence as the problem.

If she became upset, I focused on how upset she sounded.

If she stopped asking, I declared the matter finished.

A record wouldn't respond to any of those tactics.

I leaned forward.

The email lay beside my phone.

I had left both in nearly the same positions.

The page was straight.

The phone was turned over.

I kept them that way without consciously deciding to.

I suppose I wanted something in the room to remain orderly.

Nothing else felt orderly.

I thought about Jasmine.

Her name was the only other person's name in the request that immediately pulled my attention away from Claire.

Jasmine Cole.

I knew why Claire would connect her to our marriage.

I had given Claire every reason to make that connection.

What troubled me was the additional language.

Employment.

Compensation.

I had read those words repeatedly.

I knew what they meant.

But I couldn't tell from the request exactly which decisions Claire wanted examined.

That uncertainty made me restless.

I wanted to know what documents existed.

Which ones were relevant.

What questions might be asked.

I wanted to understand the limits of the problem before anyone else understood them.

Then I recognized the impulse.

I was still trying to control the situation.

Not to repair the harm.

Not to listen to Claire.

To control what happened next.

I set the paper down.

I remembered the way Michael had refused to speculate.

He hadn't suggested that the request would disappear.

He hadn't promised that the board would ignore it.

He had simply explained what it asked.

At the time, his restraint had irritated me.

Now I understood why it mattered.

If I began treating guesses as facts, I would only make the situation harder to face.

I knew that.

I had spent too long doing exactly that.

I picked up my phone.

No missed call from Claire.

No message.

I checked anyway.

Then I checked the call history.

Twenty-seven attempts from earlier that morning.

And the additional call I had made while Michael was there.

I stared at the record.

The number of attempts no longer felt like evidence of concern.

It felt like evidence of panic.

I had wanted an answer so badly that I kept repeating the same action despite knowing the result.

I thought about what I would have said if Claire had answered.

That was a harder question than I expected.

Would I have apologized?

Perhaps.

Would I have asked whether she was all right?

I wanted to believe so.

But the questions that came most naturally were different.

Why did you hire Nathan Brooks?

Why did you involve the board?

What have you told him about Jasmine?

Those were the things I wanted to know.

They were all about me.

My exposure.

My reputation.

My fear.

I put the phone away from the edge of the desk.

I felt ashamed.

Not deeply enough to forget my anxiety.

Not enough to become a different person.

Just ashamed enough to recognize something unpleasant.

I wanted Claire to comfort me after I had given her years of reasons not to trust me.

There was a cruel imbalance in that.

I had been willing to leave her uncertain about our marriage.

But now I expected her to end my uncertainty immediately.

I sat back.

For a long while, I didn't touch either object.

The office remained quiet.

I could hear the ordinary sounds of people working elsewhere.

Nothing about the company had suddenly stopped.

That surprised me.

My private panic felt enormous.

Outside my office, business continued.

People still had obligations that had nothing to do with my marriage.

I had always liked being important.

I liked knowing that decisions passed across my desk.

I liked being listened to.

There was nothing inherently wrong with enjoying responsibility.

But I had allowed the feeling to grow into entitlement.

I had begun expecting that my needs should take priority simply because they were mine.

Claire had suffered most from that habit.

Now the habit had become visible to me in a different setting.

I wanted Michael to solve my uncertainty.

I wanted Claire to answer my calls.

I wanted Nathan Brooks's request to disappear.

And I wanted all those things without first accepting that other people were entitled to act independently.

I took another look at the paper.

The language remained unchanged.

Of course it did.

I wondered how Claire had felt when she saw whatever information had led her to seek legal help.

I didn't know.

I had no account of that conversation.

I couldn't invent one just because it would help me understand the situation.

What I could say was that she had taken the step.

She had retained Nathan Brooks.

Her attorney had made a formal request.

Those facts mattered more than whatever motive I preferred to assign to her.

I started to imagine her anger.

Then I stopped.

I had spent too many years assuming I knew what her silence meant.

I couldn't keep doing that.

She might be furious.

She might be exhausted.

She might have reached a decision long before I noticed.

I didn't know.

The only responsible thing was to admit that I didn't know.

I read the request one more time.

It still frightened me.

But I no longer expected the page to reveal Claire's feelings.

It wasn't written for that purpose.

It was written to preserve information.

I placed it in front of me.

The next time Michael spoke to me about it, I wanted to ask questions that had answers.

Not because that would solve everything.

Because I had finally begun to recognize the difference between wanting certainty and having facts.

I looked at my phone again.

Then I turned my attention back to the page.

For the first time, I let it remain unanswered.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Had Always Known How to Protect My Reputation, But I Couldn’t
