4 – I Kept Reading Claire’s Lawyer’s Request, Searching for a Way to Dismiss the Questions I Had Helped Create

I wanted the email to mean less than it did.

That was my first thought after the call ended.

Not that I should apologize.

Not that I should finally explain everything to Claire.

I wanted the paper on my desk to be less serious.

I wanted Michael to tell me that I had misunderstood it.

I looked toward him.

He remained quiet.

That was when I understood that he wasn't going to make the problem smaller for my benefit.

I picked up the page again.

The request concerned records.

It asked the board to preserve materials relating to my personal use of company resources.

It included executive travel expenses.

It also covered employment and compensation decisions involving Jasmine Cole.

I read those subjects several times.

They were specific.

That bothered me.

Claire had not made a general complaint about my character.

Her attorney had identified particular categories of information.

I couldn't dismiss that as a moment of anger.

I tried anyway.

"This is between Claire and me."

Michael looked at the document.

"Not every part of it."

I didn't like his answer.

I wanted the company left out of my marriage.

I wanted Jasmine's name left out of any official discussion.

I wanted the damage I had caused to remain somewhere I could explain it privately.

But the request had already connected matters I preferred to keep separate.

I stared at Michael.

"Are you saying the board has to take this seriously?"

"I'm saying it's a formal request from her lawyer."

I looked at the email again.

He had answered exactly what I asked.

I was the one looking for something else.

Reassurance.

An excuse.

A reason to believe that nothing had changed.

I could still hear the sound of Claire's unanswered call in my mind.

I had spent the morning reaching for her.

Now I had to confront the possibility that she was deliberately keeping our conversations separate from whatever legal steps she intended to take.

I didn't know whether that was her lawyer's advice.

I didn't know whether it was her own decision.

I knew only that she hadn't spoken to me.

And that she had communicated with the board through an attorney.

Those were the facts.

They should have been enough.

I kept searching for a different explanation.

Maybe she wanted me to panic.

Maybe the request was a warning.

Maybe Nathan Brooks had suggested something aggressive because he knew it would frighten me.

Each possibility gave me a little room to avoid asking the most difficult question.

Why had Claire felt she needed to take such a step?

I already knew part of the answer.

I had cheated.

I had humiliated her.

I had allowed the situation to continue for three years.

And I had expected her to absorb it.

There was no way to make those facts respectable.

I had tried for a long time.

I called my behavior complicated.

I called our marriage troubled.

I told myself that Claire and I had stopped understanding one another.

Sometimes I even allowed myself to believe that her silence had contributed to our problems.

That was especially shameful.

Her reluctance to argue had become another thing I used against her.

When I hurt her, I wanted her to stay calm.

When she stayed calm, I treated it as proof that the hurt couldn't be that serious.

When she finally stopped speaking to me, I called her unreasonable.

I could see the pattern.

I simply didn't want to name it.

Michael shifted the paper slightly.

I looked at him.

"Do we have any indication of what she wants beyond this?"

"Not from the request I've shown you."

I nodded.

It was a small answer.

It left me with the same uncertainty.

I was used to knowing where a difficult conversation was headed.

I could listen for what someone wanted.

Money.

An apology.

A concession.

A promise.

Then I could decide how much I was willing to give.

But I couldn't find a demand like that in the document before me.

It asked that information be kept.

Nothing in it promised me a private settlement.

Nothing suggested Claire was ready to return my calls.

Nothing said I could solve the situation by finding the right words.

I ran my eyes over Jasmine's name.

Seeing it in a formal request made me uncomfortable in a way I hadn't expected.

I had become accustomed to separating Jasmine from the consequences of my marriage.

I knew that was irrational.

She was part of the affair.

Her name belonged to what Claire had discovered or understood about my behavior.

But I had not wanted that name connected to questions about company employment or compensation.

Now it was there.

In writing.

I glanced toward Michael.

He was waiting for me to finish reading.

For the first time, I wondered how he saw me.

Not as an executive.

Not as someone whose decisions he was expected to discuss.

As a husband.

As the man whose wife had found reason to involve legal counsel.

I had never cared much about that distinction before.

I could act as though my private behavior existed in a separate world.

I had become comfortable with people respecting my professional position without questioning the way I treated Claire.

The email made that separation harder to maintain.

I looked at the word preservation again.

I understood its ordinary meaning.

Keep what exists.

Do not lose it.

Do not allow it to disappear.

The request did not establish whether I had misused company resources.

It did not prove that anything improper had happened with Jasmine's employment or compensation.

But it made clear that those matters could be examined.

That possibility was enough to change the room.

I felt exposed.

Michael hadn't accused me of anything.

Claire hadn't spoken to me.

Nathan Brooks wasn't standing in front of my desk.

Still, I felt as if the choices I had kept in separate compartments were being brought together.

I thought about calling Claire again.

My hand moved toward the phone.

Then I stopped.

The last call had gone to voicemail.

The twenty-seven before it had accomplished nothing.

Another would tell me what I already knew.

She wasn't answering.

I left the phone where it was.

I couldn't remember the last time I had wanted so badly to hear her voice.

That bothered me.

Not because the feeling was false.

Because I knew how much of it came from fear.

I wanted Claire to tell me what she knew.

I wanted her to explain what Nathan Brooks had advised.

I wanted her to give me some assurance that the situation would not reach beyond our marriage.

I wanted answers that would protect me.

I couldn't honestly say that my first concern was whether she was all right.

For a long moment, I sat with that recognition.

I didn't have a comforting explanation for it.

I had spent three years making choices that caused Claire pain.

Now I was afraid those choices might have consequences I couldn't manage.

The difference mattered.

Michael asked whether I needed anything further from him.

I looked at the page.

"Not right now."

He didn't try to fill the silence.

I appreciated that more than I expected.

There was nothing he could say that would make Claire's action disappear.

And nothing I could say would change the fact that her attorney had already contacted the board.

I set the email flat on the desk.

I straightened its edge without thinking.

Then I looked at the phone beside it.

Those two objects told me everything I actually knew.

One contained the record of my attempts to reach Claire.

The other contained the evidence that she had taken a formal step without speaking to me.

I was tempted to turn the paper over.

To put it out of sight.

Instead, I left it faceup.

I had avoided looking directly at unpleasant things for too long.

I could not pretend the request had never arrived.

I could not pretend Jasmine's name wasn't on it.

And I could no longer assume that Claire's silence meant she intended to do nothing.

I still didn't know what she had told Nathan Brooks.

I didn't know what records might become relevant.

I didn't know what the board would decide.

Those answers were not in the source of information Michael had brought me.

What I did know was much simpler.

Claire had stopped waiting for me to decide when our problems deserved attention.

She had taken her concerns somewhere I couldn't silence them by ending a conversation.

For years, I had believed that her quietness made her powerless.

That afternoon, I finally began to understand how badly I had mistaken one for the other.

I put my phone beside the printed email.

I didn't call again.

Not because I had finally made everything right.

Not because I deserved credit for leaving her alone.

I stopped because there was no longer any point pretending I could force an answer.

The document stayed on my desk.

Claire remained silent.

And for the first time in our marriage, I had to face a problem on terms I hadn't chosen.

Click
