That's why the board is involved."

I looked down again.

Preservation.

I kept returning to that idea.

Nobody was asking me to explain myself in the document Michael had shown me.

Nobody was inviting me to have a private conversation.

The request was about keeping records available.

It was about ensuring that the relevant information remained in place.

I began to realize that whatever Claire intended to do next, she had chosen a process that did not depend on whether I approved.

That was a new feeling.

For years, I had been able to delay conversations with her.

If I didn't want to talk about Jasmine, I found a reason to end the discussion.

If Claire pressed me about something uncomfortable, I treated her questions as an accusation.

Sometimes I became impatient.

Sometimes I pretended I didn't understand why she was upset.

Whatever method I used, I generally managed to avoid facing the full meaning of what I had done.

But I couldn't argue a preservation request out of existence.

I couldn't make it disappear by telling Michael the matter was personal.

I looked at the name again.

Nathan Brooks.

I had spent years assuming Claire would confront me directly if she ever decided to fight back.

I had imagined raised voices.

Tears.

A conversation I could try to control.

She had chosen something quieter.

A lawyer.

A written request.

A board that would now have to consider the matter.

I picked up my phone.

The screen showed my earlier attempts to reach her.

Twenty-seven unanswered calls.

I knew what I was about to do.

It made no sense.

I did it anyway.

I selected Claire's number.

Michael said nothing.

The call connected.

Then it went to her recorded greeting.

No conversation.

No answer.

I lowered the phone.

My hand stayed around it.

I looked at the printed email.

For the first time, I stopped telling myself Claire was simply trying to punish me with silence.

She had taken action.

I had received proof.

And I still had no idea what she intended to say to me, if she ever chose to speak.

I turned the phone facedown beside the paper.

There was nothing useful I could do by calling again.

That realization was small.

It was also humiliating.

I had spent three years expecting Claire to respond to whatever I did.

Now the only response I could see was a formal document sitting on my desk.

And it hadn't been addressed to me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Kept Reading Claire’s Lawyer’s Request, Searching for a Way to Dismiss the Questions I Had Helped Create

I had never seen Michael struggle to find his footing in a conversation.
