1 – My Husband Called Twenty-Seven Times That Morning, But He Still Had No Idea Why I Refused to Answer

I had called Claire so many times that morning that I stopped listening to the ringing.

Twenty-seven times.

I knew the number because my phone kept the record.

I could see every failed attempt lined up on the screen.

And every time I looked at it, I felt a little more foolish.

My name was Aaron.

For three years, I had been unfaithful to my wife.

I had treated her patience like something I owned.

I had allowed myself to believe that whatever I did, Claire would remain where I expected her to be.

Looking back, that was the ugliest part of it.

Not just the cheating.

The certainty.

I had convinced myself that my marriage could survive any humiliation as long as I was the one deciding what counted as serious.

Claire rarely argued.

When she was hurt, she became quiet.

When I avoided a conversation, she generally stopped asking.

I took that as agreement.

It wasn't.

I knew that now.

But on the morning I called her twenty-seven times, I was still trying to understand how badly I had misjudged her.

I sat at my desk with the phone in my hand.

The room was quiet enough that I could hear the faint sound of the call connecting.

Then the recorded greeting.

Again.

I ended the call before the message finished.

I looked at the screen.

No reply.

I tried to tell myself she needed time.

Perhaps she wanted me to worry.

Perhaps she was angry enough to make a point.

Those explanations felt manageable.

They allowed me to imagine that I still understood what was happening.

What I couldn't explain was the other silence.

Michael had been unusually careful around me that day.

He was a man who generally spoke plainly, even when he knew I wouldn't enjoy hearing what he had to say.

I was used to that.

I trusted his ability to remain calm when a situation became unpleasant.

But something in his manner had changed.

He had spoken less than usual.

He had watched me closely whenever Claire's name came up.

At the time, I thought he was judging me.

I didn't yet understand that he was worried about something much more immediate.

I set my phone facedown.

Then I picked it up again.

That little movement embarrassed me.

I was a grown man, sitting in an executive office, unable to stop checking whether my wife had returned a call.

And the worst part was that I still felt entitled to an answer.

I hadn't earned one.

Three years gave me plenty of opportunities to be decent.

I had ignored most of them.

I knew I had hurt Claire.

There was no honest way to deny it.

I also knew that the name Jasmine Cole had become part of the damage I had done to my marriage.

At first, I preferred not to think about Jasmine and Claire together.

Keeping them separate made my choices easier to defend.

One was the woman I had married.

The other was connected to the affair I had allowed to continue.

I told myself those were different parts of my life.

That was convenient.

It was also dishonest.

I had made decisions that affected both women, and I had expected Claire to live with the consequences without asking too many questions.

I never wanted to describe myself as cruel.

Careless sounded better.

Confused sounded better.

A man who had made mistakes.

That was how I preferred to see myself.

But a mistake doesn't last three years simply because nobody knows how to stop it.

At some point, it becomes a choice.

I had made that choice repeatedly.

I looked at Claire's number again.

My thumb rested above the call button.

I knew what would happen.

I pressed it anyway.

The call went unanswered.

I tried to imagine what she was doing.

I couldn't.

That surprised me more than it should have.

I had lived as her husband while knowing far less about her thoughts than I pretended to know.

I knew the version of Claire who had endured my behavior.

I knew how she looked when she decided not to argue.

I knew how she sounded when she no longer expected an apology.

But I had never made a serious effort to understand what she intended to do with everything she had learned.

That morning, the answer mattered.

I put the phone down.

For several minutes, I tried to concentrate on work.

There were ordinary responsibilities waiting for me.

Documents.

Decisions.

The kind of things that had once made me feel important.

I couldn't hold my attention on any of them.

My eyes kept returning to the same small screen.

I began to resent Claire for leaving me uncertain.

Then I caught myself.

I had kept her uncertain for years.

I had expected her to tolerate explanations that were barely explanations at all.

Now I couldn't tolerate a morning without hearing her voice.

The unfairness was obvious.

I saw it.

And still, part of me wanted to complain.

That is difficult to admit.

I wasn't suddenly becoming a better man.

I was frightened because my usual ways of controlling a conversation no longer worked.

I could call.

I could leave a message.

I could insist that we needed to speak.

I could not make her answer.

For the first time, that difference meant something to me.

I turned toward the desk again.

The office had always felt like a place where I knew what I was doing.

I understood how to handle a difficult meeting.

I understood how to question a decision.

I understood how to make my opinion heard.

With Claire, I had spent years behaving as if the same authority extended into our marriage.

I had been wrong.

And that morning, without saying a word, she was making me face it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: I
