I said.

"Neither do I."

He handed me the towel.

I took it and dried my hands.

For a moment, I considered telling him that the silence between us was beginning to hurt almost as much as the questions had.

But I didn't know how to say it without making him feel responsible for every difficult feeling I had.

He looked at me.

"Do you think we'll get past this?"

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted to tell him that we would return to normal if we were patient enough.

Instead, I answered honestly.

"I think we can try."

He nodded, although I could tell he wanted more certainty.

So did I.

We finished the dishes and went into the living room.

He turned on the television.

I sat beside him, but neither of us paid much attention to what was playing.

After a while, he took my hand.

I let him hold it.

I could feel the warmth of his fingers and the familiar pressure of his thumb against my skin.

For years, that simple gesture had been enough to reassure me.

Now it comforted me without settling anything.

I was learning to live with that difference.

The next morning, I woke with a question already in my mind.

What if I had misunderstood the whole thing?

I had asked myself that question many times, but this time I tried to consider it without fear.

What if the chair had never mattered to my husband in the way it mattered to me?

What if his accounts had changed because he was describing the same unpleasant afternoon from different angles?

What if I had made the inconsistencies larger by returning to them so often?

Those possibilities were real.

I could not dismiss them simply because I was afraid of being wrong.

But another possibility was real too.

What if I had noticed something important, and my fear of damaging the marriage had made me reluctant to follow it?

I sat on the edge of the bed, thinking about both sides.

I couldn't prove either one.

That was the truth I had been trying to escape.

I wanted certainty because uncertainty left me responsible for making a decision without knowing whether I had all the information.

It was easier to keep asking questions than to accept that some questions might remain unanswered.

But the repeated conversations were not giving me new information.

They were making us both more guarded.

I decided that I needed a different way to approach the problem.

Not another list of contradictions.

Not another attempt to get him to describe the chair in exactly the right words.

I needed to ask myself what I would do if I never received a perfect explanation.

The answer came slowly.

I would have to decide what I could live with.

I would have to decide what trust meant when it was no longer effortless.

And I would have to stop using my husband's ability to reassure me as the only measure of whether I was allowed to trust my own memory.

That thought stayed with me throughout the day.

Later, I opened the drawer and took out the folder.

I read the timeline once, carefully.

Then I read the notebook.

I did not try to find a new clue.

I wanted to see whether the papers still supported what I remembered.

They did.

The timeline remained unchanged.

My notes recorded the conversations as I remembered them.

Neither document proved why the chair had changed in his telling.

But neither required me to pretend that I had imagined the differences.

I put the papers away.

That evening, my husband asked whether I wanted to eat at the table or in the living room.

"The table," I said.

He set the plates down.

I noticed that he placed his chair slightly farther from the wall to make room for the cupboard door.

The movement was ordinary.

Still, I watched him for a moment.

He noticed.

"What?"

I almost said nothing.

Instead, I told him the truth.

"I was thinking about the chair again."

He put down his fork.

For a second, I thought he would become frustrated.

Instead, he asked, "What about it?"

I considered my answer.

"I don't know why it keeps coming back to me."

He looked at the chair beside him.

Then he looked at me.

"I don't know why it keeps coming back to me either."

The answer was so simple that I felt my eyes sting.

Not because it explained anything.

Because, for once, we were standing in the same uncertainty without one of us trying to make the other person leave it.

I nodded.

"Okay."

He reached for his glass.

We continued eating.

We did not solve the problem that evening.

We did not discuss the earlier versions or compare dates.

But the conversation felt different.

I had not asked him to prove that my memory was wrong.

He had not asked me to stop remembering.

For a few minutes, we had allowed the question to exist between us without turning it into a contest.

I didn't know how long that would last.

I only knew it mattered.

After dinner, I sat alone at the kitchen table.

The chair remained beside the wall, exactly where it had been for years.

I looked at it and tried to imagine the chair at the hospital.

I couldn't remember its precise position.

I couldn't remember whether my husband had described it accurately the first time or the last.

I could not reconstruct the afternoon from the few details I had.

I let the image fade.

For once, I did not force myself to keep looking.

The chair was an object.

The story attached to it was something my husband and I had told and retold, each of us carrying different fears into the conversation.

I still wanted to know what had happened.

But I was beginning to see that my need for an answer could become another way of hurting myself if I refused to accept the limits of what I knew.

I stood, pushed the chair back beneath the table, and turned off the kitchen light.

I had not found certainty.

I had found a little more room to breathe.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: I Had Spent So Long Trying to Decide Whether He Was Hiding Something That I Nearly Missed What the Silence Was Doing to Both of Us

I started noticing the small things we avoided.
