I went through the day's errands without replaying old conversations. When my husband mentioned the hospital, I listened without immediately asking about the chair.

I wanted to believe I was getting better.

Then I noticed what I was doing instead.

I was waiting.

I waited for him to bring up the afternoon without being asked. I waited for him to explain why the chair had stayed in his memory. I waited for him to say something that would make the earlier conversations fit together.

I had stopped asking the questions out loud.

I had not stopped asking them.

That was the part I hadn't understood when I put the folder away.

Silence had given me a little rest, but it hadn't answered anything.

One morning, I found my husband standing at the kitchen counter, looking through a drawer for a spoon.

He moved a stack of napkins aside and reached beneath them.

"You moved these," he said.

"I put them away yesterday."

He found the spoon and closed the drawer.

"Right."

He returned to his coffee.

I watched him for a moment, then looked away.

It was a small exchange, but I noticed how quickly I had prepared to defend myself. Before he had finished speaking, I had already been searching my memory for when I had moved the napkins.

I was tired of that feeling.

I didn't want to question every ordinary interaction.

I also didn't want to pretend that the feeling had come from nowhere.

After breakfast, I went into the bedroom and opened the drawer.

The folder was beneath a stack of folded clothes.

I took it out and placed it on the bed.

The hospital timeline was still inside, along with the notebook.

I sat beside them for a while before opening either one.

I thought about the first time I had hidden the timeline beneath the spare shirt.

My husband had walked into the room with two coffees, and I had acted as though nothing unusual had happened.

I had been afraid he would see the paper and understand that I was questioning him.

But he had already noticed that I was troubled.

He had asked whether I was all right.

He had offered to listen.

I had refused.

Looking back, I could see that I had been afraid of two different things.

I was afraid he might have an answer I didn't want to hear.

I was also afraid that he might have no answer at all.

The first possibility threatened my trust in him.

The second threatened my ability to make sense of what had happened.

I opened the notebook.

The early pages were full of hurried observations. I had written down his words because I was frightened that I would forget them.

The later entries were calmer.

They showed me trying to separate what I knew from what I suspected.

I turned to the last page.

There were still several empty lines.

I picked up a pen and wrote a question.

What am I waiting for him to tell me?

I looked at the words.

I couldn't answer them immediately.

Perhaps I was waiting for him to acknowledge that the chair had changed in his account.

Perhaps I wanted him to explain why he kept mentioning it.

Perhaps I wanted him to tell me that there was nothing more to understand.

That last possibility frightened me.

If he gave me a simple reassurance, would I believe it because it made sense, or because I desperately wanted the uncertainty to end?

I put the pen down.

I couldn't make myself answer the question honestly yet.

That afternoon, my husband asked whether I wanted to sit with him outside.

I agreed.

He brought two cups of coffee, and we sat beside each other in the warm afternoon air.

For a while, we talked about ordinary things.

Then he asked whether I had been feeling better.

"A little."

He nodded.

"I'm glad."

I looked at him.

He seemed sincere.

I wanted to tell him that I appreciated his patience, but I also wanted him to understand that I hadn't put the questions away simply because I had stopped asking them.

Instead, I asked him something else.

"Do you ever think about that afternoon when we're not talking about it?"

He looked at me.

"Sometimes."

"What do you think about?"

He considered the question.

"How tired we both were. How long everything seemed to take."

I waited.

He took a drink of coffee.

"Mostly, I remember wanting to get home."

I nodded.

"And the chair?"

He looked down at his cup.

"Sometimes I remember that too."

He didn't say anything else.

I could have asked where he remembered it being.

I could have asked why he kept returning to it.

But I had begun to recognize the moment when a conversation reached the limit of what someone was willing or able to say.

I didn't know which limit we had reached.

I only knew that asking another question would not necessarily give me another answer.

"All right," I said.

He glanced at me.

"Does that help?"

"A little."

It wasn't the answer he wanted, but it was true.

We sat quietly for a while longer.

When we went inside, I put the cups in the sink.

He came up behind me and rested a hand on my shoulder.

I leaned against him briefly.

I still loved him.

That fact had never disappeared, even when I was frightened of what his words might mean.

But love did not make me less curious about the truth.

It only made the truth more important.

That evening, I returned to the notebook.

I read the question I had written earlier.

What am I waiting for him to tell me?

This time, I wrote beneath it.

I am waiting for him to explain something he may not understand himself.

I stared at the sentence.

It was possible that my husband genuinely didn't remember the afternoon in the precise way I wanted him to. It was possible that the chair had become important through repetition, that he was trying to describe a feeling rather than a sequence of events.

Those possibilities deserved consideration.

But I also needed to acknowledge something else.

His uncertainty did not erase mine.

Even if he had no deliberate intention to confuse me, the changing story had affected the way I experienced our conversations.

I couldn't simply decide that everything was fine because his explanation might be innocent.

I closed the notebook.

For the first time, I felt I had written something that allowed both of us to remain human.

He could be mistaken without being cruel.

I could be suspicious without being certain.

Neither of us needed to become a villain for the situation to hurt.

I returned the notebook to the folder.

Then I put the folder back in the drawer.

I didn't feel the same need to check it again before bed.

The questions remained, but I had stopped expecting one perfect sentence from my husband to make them disappear.

I was beginning to understand that the answer might come slowly, through what we could discuss honestly and what we still couldn't explain.

That was not the resolution I wanted.

But it was more honest than pretending I had already found one.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The More I Tried to Separate His Memories From Mine, the More I Understood That Our Marriage Had Become a Place Where We Both Feared the Wrong Answer

I didn't open the folder for almost a week.
