I could accept that he might have attached importance to a detail without knowing why.

But I still needed to understand why the different accounts had made me so uneasy.

"I hear you," I said.

He looked at me.

"Do you believe me?"

I took a breath.

"I believe that you're telling me what you remember right now."

He looked away.

The distinction was small, but I knew he heard it.

I wanted to say more.

I wanted to explain that belief did not have to be all or nothing. I could believe that he was tired, that the afternoon had been difficult, and that he did not remember every detail.

I could also remain uncertain about the changes in his account.

Instead, I placed the last plate in the cupboard.

"We don't have to settle everything today," I said.

He nodded.

We finished in the kitchen.

Later, I sat alone with the notebook.

I wrote down the conversation, keeping the wording as close as I could to what I remembered.

Then I read the entry without adding an interpretation.

He said he remembered sitting in the chair.

He said he had been uncomfortable.

He said he wanted to leave the room.

He said he didn't know why he kept mentioning the chair.

Those were the statements.

The meaning remained uncertain.

I had spent so much time trying to discover what his words concealed that I had sometimes forgotten to notice what they actually contained.

He had not given me a complete account.

He had not resolved the differences.

But he had admitted that he didn't understand one part of his own story.

I closed the notebook.

I felt neither satisfied nor defeated.

I felt tired.

That evening, we sat together in the living room.

My husband asked whether I wanted to watch something.

I said yes.

He chose a program, and we settled on the sofa.

At some point, he reached for my hand.

I let him hold it.

I didn't try to decide what the gesture proved.

I didn't tell myself that it meant everything was fine.

I simply let it be a gesture from a person I still loved.

That was harder than it sounds.

For days, I had treated every detail as though it belonged in one of two categories.

Evidence that he could be trusted.

Evidence that he could not.

But people were not that simple, and neither were relationships.

His hand could be warm.

His words could be incomplete.

I could love him and still be unsure.

The truth of one thing did not automatically erase the truth of another.

When the program ended, he asked whether I wanted to go to bed.

I nodded.

We turned off the lights and went upstairs.

I lay awake for a while, listening to the quiet sounds of the house.

I thought about the chair, the timeline, and the first moment I had hidden the paper beneath the spare shirt.

I had been afraid that if he saw what I was reading, he would know I was questioning him.

I had treated that fear as proof that I was doing something wrong.

Now I saw it differently.

I had hidden the paper because I wasn't ready to discuss it.

That was all.

I didn't need to turn my own hesitation into a confession of guilt.

The next morning, I made coffee and opened the drawer.

The folder was still there.

I took it out and placed it on the table.

For a few minutes, I considered showing it to my husband.

I imagined laying the timeline and notebook between us and explaining what I had recorded.

Then I realized I was not ready.

I still needed to understand what I wanted from that conversation.

Did I want him to acknowledge the differences?

Did I want him to explain them?

Did I want him to reassure me that nothing important had been hidden?

Those were different requests.

I could not expect him to answer them if I could not yet separate them myself.

So I put the papers back in the folder.

I would not hide them from myself.

But I would not use them to force a conversation before I knew what I needed to say.

That afternoon, my husband asked whether I wanted to take a walk.

I agreed.

We walked slowly, talking about ordinary things.

When he mentioned the hospital, I listened.

When he paused, I let the pause remain.

And when he finished, I did not supply the words he had left out.

For the first time, I understood that listening did not mean repairing someone else's story.

It meant allowing the other person to speak, while keeping enough room inside myself to recognize what I had heard.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Had Stopped Demanding an Answer From Every Conversation, but I Still Needed to Know Whether Silence Was Helping Us Heal or Helping Us Hide

The next time the hospital came up, I wasn't prepared for it.
