He talked more freely, made jokes at dinner, and asked whether I wanted to go out with him on the weekend.

I said yes.

I wanted to remember what it felt like to spend time with him without studying his face.

We went to a small shop and bought a few things for the house. He carried the heavier bag, and I held the receipt so we could check the total when we got home.

On the way back, he reached for my hand.

I let him take it.

His fingers felt familiar against mine.

I wondered how much of my fear came from the questions themselves and how much came from the fact that I had begun asking them of someone I loved.

I had never thought of trust as something I could examine.

It had simply been there.

Now every ordinary gesture seemed to remind me of what I wanted to recover.

That evening, we ate at home.

He told me about an errand that had taken longer than expected, and I listened while clearing space on the table.

Then he mentioned the hospital.

It happened so casually that I almost missed it.

He was talking about how long we had waited and how uncomfortable he had been.

I stopped moving a plate.

He looked at me.

"What is it?"

"Nothing."

He sighed softly.

"I thought we were doing better."

The words hurt.

I set the plate down.

"We are."

"Then why do you keep looking like that whenever I mention the hospital?"

I wanted to tell him that I couldn't control every expression on my face.

Instead, I took a breath.

"Because I'm still trying to understand what happened."

He leaned back.

"I've told you what I remember."

"I know."

"What else can I do?"

I looked at him.

That question had become familiar.

I had no answer that would satisfy both of us.

I wanted him to understand that I wasn't asking for a perfect memory. I wanted to know why the details kept shifting, and why our conversations about them left me feeling that I was the one who needed to explain myself.

But every time I tried to put that feeling into words, I worried that I was being unfair.

"I don't expect you to remember everything," I said.

He nodded.

"Then what do you expect?"

I looked down at the table.

"I expect us to be able to talk about it."

"We are talking about it."

"Not always."

He was quiet.

I could hear the refrigerator running behind me.

He picked up his glass and took a drink.

"I don't know what you want me to say."

I felt the familiar pull to end the conversation.

I could apologize.

I could tell him that I was tired and that we should leave it alone.

I could make the room comfortable again.

But I had done that so many times that I no longer trusted the relief it brought.

"I don't know either," I admitted.

He looked at me.

For a moment, I thought the honesty might help.

Then he pushed his chair back and began clearing the table.

I stood and helped him.

We washed the dishes without speaking.

The next morning, I found myself thinking about the conversation while making coffee.

I had wanted to be fair.

I had wanted to give him room to explain himself without making him feel accused.

Yet I had spent most of the conversation protecting him from the discomfort of my questions.

I had softened my words.

I had apologized with my tone even when I hadn't said I was sorry.

I had watched his face more carefully than I had listened to my own thoughts.

I was beginning to see how much work I was doing to keep the conversation from becoming difficult.

That realization made me uncomfortable.

It also made me less willing to blame myself for every unanswered question.

When my husband came into the kitchen, he looked at the coffee pot.

"Did you make enough?"

"Yes."

He poured a cup and sat down.

For a while, we talked about the day ahead.

Then he asked whether I had slept well.

"Not really."

He looked concerned.

"Is it the hospital again?"

I considered lying.

"Partly."

He rubbed his thumb along the handle of his cup.

"I wish I could help."

I believed that he might mean it.

That was what made everything so difficult.

I didn't want to turn him into a villain simply because I was frightened. I didn't want to erase the kindness I had known from him for years.

But I couldn't use that kindness to settle a question it had nothing to do with.

"I know," I said.

He reached across the table and touched my hand.

I let him.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

"Maybe we should stop talking about the chair."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because every time we talk about it, we end up here."

He gestured between us.

I understood his point.

The conversations had become painful, repetitive, and exhausting.

But the chair was not the reason we kept ending up there.

It was the detail that had made me notice the problem.

If I stopped asking about it, I would still remember the differences.

I would still know that I had questions.

And I would still be the person carrying them.

"I don't want us to argue about it," I said.

"Neither do I."

"But not talking about it doesn't make it go away."

He withdrew his hand.

He didn't look angry.

He looked tired.

"I don't know what else to do."

I watched him for a moment.

Neither did I.

We finished breakfast and went about our day.

I didn't take out the notebook.

I didn't reopen the folder.

But I carried the conversation with me.

That evening, I sat alone in the bedroom and looked at the drawer where I had stored the papers.

I thought about the timeline, the changing details, and the chair that had become more important with every retelling.

Then I thought about my husband asking me to stop talking about it.

I could understand why he wanted that.

I could even understand why I wanted it too.

But I knew that silence would not settle anything.

It would only make the question harder to bring up later.

I left the drawer closed.

For once, I didn't need to read the notes to know what I remembered.

I knew what I had heard.

I knew what I had asked.

And I knew that I had not yet found an explanation I could trust.

That was where I had to leave it.

Not because I had given up.

Because I was beginning to understand that I could not make another person give me certainty by asking the same question in different ways.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Began to Notice How Quickly I Apologized for Asking Simple Questions, and I Could No Longer Pretend That Habit Was Harmless

For several days, I let the folder stay in the drawer.
