He had a cup of coffee in front of him, and I was sorting through a few receipts.

He looked toward the empty chair beside the wall.

"I was thinking about that chair at the hospital."

I stopped sorting.

"What about it?"

He rubbed the side of his cup with his thumb.

"I don't know why I keep remembering it."

I watched him.

"What do you remember?"

He paused.

"Mostly that I was uncomfortable."

I nodded.

He looked down at the coffee.

"And that I wanted things to be over."

I waited.

He gave a small, tired laugh.

"That whole day was miserable."

I could have let the conversation end there.

It would have been easy to agree and return to the receipts.

Instead, I asked the question that had been bothering me since the beginning.

"Why does the chair stand out if you don't remember much about it?"

He stopped rubbing the cup.

For a few seconds, he didn't answer.

Then he looked at me.

"I don't know."

It was the first time he had said those words without immediately following them with another explanation.

I felt myself relax slightly.

He continued.

"Maybe because you've asked about it so many times."

The relief disappeared.

I looked down at the receipts.

That answer was possible.

I had brought the chair into our conversations repeatedly. I had asked him to describe it, locate it, and explain why he remembered it.

Perhaps I had made it more important to him simply by questioning him about it.

But that wasn't the whole problem.

I had started asking because he had mentioned it himself.

I remembered that much.

"I asked because you kept bringing it up," I said.

He looked confused.

"I thought you were asking me about it."

"I was."

"Then I don't understand."

I took a breath.

"I don't understand either."

We sat quietly.

The kitchen light made a pale circle on the table. My receipts lay in a crooked pile beside his cup.

I wanted to explain the sequence again.

I wanted to tell him that I had not chosen the chair at random. I had noticed the differences in his story before I started questioning him about it.

But I was afraid we would return to the same argument.

He would say that memory changed.

I would say I understood.

Then we would both leave the conversation feeling unheard.

So I gathered the receipts and put them in a drawer.

My husband watched me.

"Are you angry?"

"No."

"You're upset."

I considered denying it.

Then I decided not to.

"I'm confused."

He nodded slowly.

"I know."

I looked at him.

"Do you?"

He didn't answer.

That silence was different from the others.

It didn't feel like a pause before another explanation. It felt as though we had reached a point neither of us knew how to cross.

He picked up his cup and carried it to the sink.

I stayed at the table.

After he left the kitchen, I took the notebook from the drawer.

I read the entries from the beginning.

There were no dramatic discoveries on the pages. No sentence that proved he had lied. No detail that settled the meaning of the chair.

There were only my notes, the dates, and the questions I had asked.

I turned to a blank page.

For a long time, I didn't write anything.

Then I wrote one sentence.

I don't know whether he is hiding something, but I know I cannot make the uncertainty disappear by blaming my memory.

I read it twice.

The sentence frightened me because it was the first one that felt completely honest.

I wasn't accusing him.

I wasn't excusing him either.

I was acknowledging the limit of what I knew.

I closed the notebook and put it away.

The next morning, my husband was unusually quiet.

He made coffee and set a cup in front of me. Then he sat across from me and looked at the table.

I waited.

Finally, he said, "I don't want us to keep going around in circles."

"Neither do I."

"I don't know what you need from me."

I looked at him.

"I need to understand why the story keeps changing."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I've told you what I remember."

"I know."

"Then what else can I do?"

I felt the familiar pressure to reassure him.

I wanted to say that he had done enough, that I was sorry for making him uncomfortable, that we could stop talking about the hospital.

But I couldn't say those things honestly.

"I don't know yet," I said.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"All right."

We finished breakfast without another word about it.

Later that day, I went into the bedroom to put away the laundry.

The bag sat beside the wardrobe.

I had moved it there because I didn't want to keep it on the floor where someone might trip over it.

I picked it up and placed it on the bed.

The zipper opened easily.

Inside, the spare shirt was still folded over the timeline.

I took out the paper and unfolded it carefully.

The creases had become soft enough that the sheet no longer lay flat.

I pressed the corners with my fingertips.

For a moment, I considered putting the timeline somewhere else. A drawer, perhaps, or a folder where I wouldn't see it every time I opened the bag.

I wanted to stop living around the paper.

But I didn't want to hide it from myself either.

I found an empty folder and placed the timeline inside.

Then I put the notebook beside it.

The two things looked ordinary together.

One held the hospital dates.

The other held my record of the conversations that followed.

Neither one could tell me what my husband intended.

But together they reminded me that my questions had not appeared from nowhere.

I slid the folder into the drawer beside the bed.

Then I closed it.

That evening, my husband asked whether I wanted to sit with him for a while.

I agreed.

We sat on the sofa, close enough that our shoulders touched.

He rested his hand on mine.

I let him.

For a few minutes, I could almost imagine that nothing had changed.

Then he said, "I wish I could make you believe me."

I turned toward him.

"I wish I could stop being afraid that I'm remembering things wrong."

He looked at me.

"I don't think you're making anything up."

The words should have comforted me.

Instead, they left me wondering why he had chosen them.

He hadn't said that my concerns made sense.

He hadn't said that he understood the contradictions.

He had said he didn't think I was inventing things.

I knew he might simply be trying to reassure me.

I also knew that reassurance was not the same as an explanation.

I squeezed his hand once.

"Thank you."

He rested his head against the sofa.

We sat together until the room grew dark.

I didn't ask another question.

But I didn't decide that the matter was settled.

For the first time, I understood that those two choices were not the same.

I could stop asking for one evening without agreeing to forget what had happened.

I could love him without pretending that every doubt had been answered.

And I could wait without surrendering my own memory.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Had Been Waiting for One Perfect Explanation, Until I Understood That the Way We Avoided the Question Was Part of the Story Too

For a few days, things became easier.
