I had simply reached the point where carrying the question around felt worse than asking it.

My husband was clearing the plates.

I stood beside the sink, rinsing a fork.

"Can I ask you something?"

He looked over his shoulder.

"Of course."

I turned off the tap.

"Will you tell me what you remember about that afternoon at the hospital?"

He set a plate on the counter.

"What part?"

"All of it. From the beginning."

He studied my face.

"Why?"

"I want to hear it again."

He wiped his hands on a towel.

"We've been over this."

"I know."

He didn't answer immediately.

I waited, trying not to fill the silence with an explanation that would make the question easier for him.

Finally, he pulled out a chair at the kitchen table.

"All right."

I sat opposite him.

He began talking about the day.

He described arriving at the hospital and waiting for things to move along. He talked about how long the afternoon had seemed and how tired he had become.

His voice was steady.

He didn't sound as though he were searching for a memory. He sounded as though he were telling something he had told many times before.

I listened without interrupting.

When he reached the part about sitting in the room, he mentioned the chair again.

I kept my face still.

He spoke about being uncomfortable and wanting the waiting to end.

Then he moved on.

I waited until he finished.

"Where was the chair?"

He frowned.

"I told you. Near the wall."

"Which wall?"

"I don't remember exactly."

I nodded.

"What did you do when you got up?"

He looked at me.

"Why are you asking that?"

"I want to understand the sequence."

He leaned back.

"I don't remember every movement I made."

"I understand."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Then what are we trying to do here?"

I looked at the table between us.

"I want to know what you remember without filling in the parts you don't."

He was quiet.

For a moment, I thought he might understand what I meant.

Instead, he said, "I remember being there for you."

I felt something tighten inside me.

"I know you were there."

"Then why does it feel like you're saying I wasn't?"

"I haven't said that."

He looked away.

The conversation had changed again.

I had asked him to describe an afternoon, and now we were discussing whether I appreciated his presence.

I knew he might genuinely feel accused. I knew my questions could sound like criticism, especially after I had spent days studying the details.

But I had not asked him whether he cared about me.

I had asked what he remembered.

"I appreciate that you were there," I said.

He looked back at me.

"Do you?"

The question hurt more than I expected.

"Yes."

"Because lately, I don't feel like you believe anything I say."

I had no easy response.

He wasn't entirely wrong.

I no longer accepted every explanation without examining it.

But I hadn't stopped listening.

"I am trying to understand something," I said.

He shook his head.

"I don't know what else I can tell you."

I watched him fold the towel in half and then in half again.

He had a habit of doing that when he was uncomfortable.

I had noticed it long before the hospital visit.

I wondered whether he knew he was doing it now.

"All right," I said.

He looked relieved.

We returned to the kitchen.

He finished putting away the dishes while I wiped the table. Neither of us mentioned the conversation again.

Later, I sat alone in the bedroom with the notebook.

I wrote down what he had said.

Then I read the entry beside the earlier accounts.

The chair remained in the story, but its position and significance were still unclear. He remembered being uncomfortable, yet he couldn't tell me exactly where the chair had been or what he had done around it.

None of that proved that he was lying.

It did, however, leave the details unresolved.

I was learning to accept that distinction.

For a long time, I had believed that every question needed an answer before I could move forward. If I couldn't explain a contradiction, I kept turning it over until I found a version that made sense.

Now I was beginning to see that sometimes the honest answer was simply that I didn't know.

I didn't know whether my husband had forgotten.

I didn't know whether he had changed his account to make it easier to tell.

I didn't know whether the chair mattered to him for a reason he had not explained.

What I knew was that I had asked him to describe the afternoon, and the conversation had ended without resolving the details.

That was enough to write down.

The next morning, I found him standing beside the kitchen table, looking at the chair near the wall.

He had moved it slightly to make room for the vacuum cleaner.

I stopped in the doorway.

He turned.

"What?"

"Nothing."

He glanced at the chair.

"I was just moving this out of the way."

I nodded.

He pushed it closer to the table.

The legs scraped against the floor.

The sound made me think of the hospital room, although I couldn't remember whether the chair there had made any sound at all.

I felt foolish for making the connection.

My husband picked up the vacuum cleaner.

"Can you move your bag? I need to clean under the table."

I lifted it from the floor.

He vacuumed beneath the chairs, moving each one carefully before returning it to its place.

When he finished, the room looked exactly as it had before.

He put the vacuum away and asked whether I wanted breakfast.

I said yes.

We ate together.

I watched him reach for the sugar and stir his coffee.

He looked tired, but he also looked ordinary.

I wanted to return to the days when ordinary meant safe.

Instead, I reminded myself that I didn't have to decide everything that morning.

I could leave the questions open without letting them consume the whole day.

After breakfast, I took the notebook out.

I read the latest entry and then closed it.

For the first time, I did not feel compelled to add another line.

I had asked.

He had answered.

The answers were incomplete, but I didn't need to keep asking the same question until one of us gave in.

I could wait for something more useful than repetition.

That afternoon, my husband came into the bedroom while I was putting away laundry.

He stood near the dresser.

"I've been thinking about our conversation."

I put a folded shirt into the drawer.

"Okay."

"I don't like feeling as though you don't trust me."

I looked at him.

"I don't like feeling that way either."

He seemed unsure what to say.

Then he sat on the edge of the bed.

"I know I've told the story more than once."

I waited.

"Maybe I haven't remembered every detail exactly."

The admission was small.

It could have been the beginning of an honest conversation.

I sat beside him.

"That could happen."

He looked at his hands.

"I wasn't trying to make things harder for you."

I wanted to ask whether he understood that things had already become hard.

I wanted to ask whether he could see how much energy I had spent trying to reconcile his different accounts.

But I held back.

He had offered something, even if it wasn't everything.

I didn't want to turn it into another argument before I understood what he meant.

"I hear you," I said.

He nodded.

We sat together for a few moments.

Then he stood and left the room.

I remained on the bed, thinking about his words.

He had admitted that his memory might not be exact.

That was different from admitting that he had changed the story deliberately.

I needed to keep those possibilities separate.

For the first time since I had hidden the timeline beneath the spare shirt, I felt that I might be able to have a conversation with him without needing to decide what every sentence meant immediately.

It wasn't trust restored.

It wasn't proof of anything.

But it was a little space between the question and the answer.

I decided to leave that space open.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: His Admission Should Have Reassured Me, but the Way He Returned to the Chair Made Me Realize We Were Still Avoiding Something

I waited until we were both home and had finished dinner.
