9 – I Had Finally Stopped Trying to Change Grant’s Mind, but Sitting Before the Judge Made Me Face What His Dishonesty Had Done to Mine

The hardest thing about sitting in that courtroom was not knowing what would happen next.

It was realizing how badly I still wanted Grant to understand what he had done.

Even after everything.

Even after the marriage had reached this point.

Even after he had told Judge Whitmore that his financial disclosures were complete.

Some part of me still wanted him to turn toward me and acknowledge the truth.

I hated admitting that.

I had spent years waiting for those moments.

Waiting for him to admit something.

Waiting for him to recognize why I was upset.

Waiting for him to stop treating my questions as though they were the problem.

And now I was doing it again.

In court.

With a judge sitting in front of us.

I looked at the letter on the desk.

Then I looked at Grant.

He seemed entirely satisfied with the answer he had given.

I couldn't tell whether he believed the matter was finished.

But he looked like someone who expected the conversation to move on.

That expression brought back a familiar feeling.

I had seen it after disagreements at home.

Grant would explain himself.

I would ask another question.

He would repeat the explanation with greater confidence.

Eventually, he would behave as though there was nothing left to discuss.

I used to find that maddening.

Not because I wanted every conversation to continue forever.

I didn't.

I wanted an answer I could believe.

There was a difference.

I had spent too much time trying to make him understand it.

Now I was sitting in a place where the distinction mattered beyond our marriage.

His attorney had assured the court that every required asset had been disclosed.

The judge had questioned that assurance.

Grant had personally confirmed it.

And I knew his statement was false.

I could not make those facts less serious by remembering that he was my husband.

I could not make them more serious simply because I was hurt.

They had to stand on their own.

I looked at Judge Whitmore.

The judge's expression remained difficult to read.

I wanted to know whether my letter had raised a question that would be examined further.

But wanting to know wasn't the same as knowing.

I reminded myself of that.

The courtroom was not a place where I could decide what other people were thinking by watching their faces.

I had done too much of that with Grant.

I had searched his expression for signs of honesty.

I had listened for hesitation.

I had tried to judge whether he was telling me everything.

Sometimes I was right.

Sometimes I wasn't.

Either way, it had become exhausting.

I didn't want to live that way anymore.

I lowered my eyes.

The edge of my chair pressed against the back of my legs.

I adjusted my position.

A small movement.

Something ordinary.

It helped remind me that I was still there, regardless of how uncertain everything felt.

I wasn't powerless simply because I couldn't control the outcome.

I had made a decision.

I had written the letter.

I had allowed my concerns to be placed before the judge.

And I was prepared to stand behind what I had written.

That was more than I would have believed possible during some of the worst moments of our marriage.

I thought about how often I had doubted myself.

Grant would speak confidently.

I would question him.

Then, somehow, I would begin wondering whether I had misunderstood the situation.

Perhaps I had been too suspicious.

Perhaps I hadn't listened carefully enough.

Perhaps I was being unfair.

Those doubts had followed me for years.

Some were reasonable.

No one understands every situation perfectly.

But others had grown out of the constant effort to reconcile Grant's explanations with what I knew.

That effort had worn me down.

I had stopped trusting my own judgment.

Not completely.

But enough that making a firm decision could feel almost impossible.

Now the decision was already made.

My letter was before Judge Whitmore.

Grant's statement had been given.

And I could not undo either one.

I looked toward Charles Bennett.

His glasses rested neatly on his face.

He had been confident when he spoke.

I wondered whether he knew how much weight I attached to the word complete.

I couldn't know.

For him, it was part of a legal representation.

For me, it described an obligation connected to twelve years of shared life.

The difference mattered.

I had helped build that life.

I had worked beside Grant.

I had believed that what we created together belonged to a partnership.

Now the partnership was ending.

And the question of what had been disclosed was not simply a technical detail to me.

It concerned the truth about our finances.

It concerned whether the court was receiving an accurate account.

It concerned whether Grant was still trying to control what other people knew.

I took my hands apart.

I had been gripping them again.

I rested them on my lap.

I didn't want anger to make me careless.

That was important.

I knew I had reasons to resent Grant.

I knew I had carried disappointment for years.

But I didn't want those feelings to become a substitute for facts.

I wanted the facts examined because they were facts.

Not because I was angry.

Not because I wanted him embarrassed.

Not because I wanted to win an argument we had been having in different forms throughout our marriage.

I wanted an honest account.

That should not have been too much to ask.

I looked at Grant again.

His tie was still straight.

His posture was still composed.

The man sitting across from me looked much as he had when I had trusted him most.

That realization hurt.

I had wanted dishonesty to reveal itself more clearly.

I had wanted it to leave some visible mark.

But Grant's appearance had remained dependable even when his words had not.

I had learned that the hard way.

And now I was learning something else.

I did not need to keep studying him.

I did not need to wait for his expression to change.

I did not need him to look ashamed before I could accept what he had done.

His answer was enough.

Judge Whitmore had asked whether the disclosures were complete.

Grant had said they were.

I knew otherwise.

That was the issue.

I looked at the letter.

The words I had written could now be considered without my husband first agreeing that I was entitled to raise them.

That was an unfamiliar kind of relief.

Not happiness.

Not triumph.

Just relief.

I had stopped asking Grant to decide whether my concerns deserved to exist.

I had finally let someone else examine them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Every Time I Looked at Grant’s Expensive Tie, I
