What my attorney told you is correct."

I felt a tightening in my chest.

He continued.

"I haven't kept anything back during this case."

There was no confusion in his voice.

No suggestion that he needed to check something.

He presented his honesty as an established fact.

I looked toward Judge Whitmore.

Then back at Grant.

I had expected him to say it.

I had known he probably would.

But hearing the words was still different.

There was something final about them.

He hadn't simply allowed Charles to make a statement.

He had personally supported it.

He had placed himself behind the claim.

And he had done that after the judge gave him a direct opportunity to answer.

I sat very still.

I didn't want my expression to give away what I was thinking.

I didn't want to interrupt.

I didn't want to turn the moment into an argument between a husband and wife.

We had already had enough of those.

This was about the accuracy of what Grant was telling the court.

That distinction mattered.

It mattered more than anything I wanted to say about the marriage.

I had many reasons to be angry with my husband.

I knew that.

I had seen our relationship change in ways I had once refused to imagine.

But anger wasn't what made his answer false.

And hurt feelings were not the reason the judge needed accurate information.

Grant's financial disclosures were either complete or they weren't.

The truth didn't depend on how much I resented him.

It didn't depend on how convincingly he spoke.

And it didn't depend on whether he thought I would remain silent.

I looked at my letter.

It was still in front of Judge Whitmore.

The sight of it steadied me.

I couldn't tell myself that writing it had been easy.

It hadn't.

I had worried about putting my concerns into a form someone else could examine.

Writing something down meant accepting responsibility for the words.

I couldn't simply claim afterward that I had never meant them.

That was uncomfortable.

But I had reached a point where silence felt worse.

And now my husband had been asked a direct question.

He had chosen his answer.

I kept returning to that fact.

Chosen.

Not forced.

Not misunderstood.

He had been given a chance to speak.

He had used it to support a false statement.

The judge had not asked me to explain my marriage.

The judge had not asked for every disappointment I carried.

The immediate issue was the completeness of the financial information.

That should have made the matter simple.

Yet everything about sitting across from Grant made it personal.

I had helped build the life being divided.

I had spent twelve years beside the person now claiming complete openness.

And I knew how little his confident manner proved.

He looked satisfied with his answer.

I recognized that, too.

Grant had often acted as though finishing an explanation meant finishing the issue.

If he sounded certain enough, he expected people to accept what he said and move on.

But he was not talking to an investor now.

He wasn't speaking to an employee.

He wasn't answering a reporter.

He was in front of a judge.

And he had made a statement about information he was legally required to disclose.

I thought about reaching for something to occupy my hands.

There was nothing I needed to do.

No paper to move.

No question I had to answer.

I simply sat there, watching the space between Grant and Judge Whitmore.

For years, I had felt the need to respond whenever Grant said something false.

I wanted to correct him.

Or make him admit what I knew.

Or at least make him understand that I wasn't foolish enough to believe every explanation.

That day, I didn't say anything.

Because for the first time in a long while, I understood that I did not have to carry both sides of the conversation.

Grant had spoken.

The judge had heard him.

And my letter was already in the judge's possession.

Nothing I said at that moment could improve the fact that my husband had been given a clear question and had answered it for himself.

I waited.

Not comfortably.

Not without fear.

But without trying to rescue him from the consequences of his own words.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Had Spent Twelve Years Hoping Grant Would
