19 – Ramirez Asked Me to Revisit One Detail About Robert, but I Was Beginning to Understand That Finding the Truth and Rebuilding My Family Were Two Different before.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As though he wanted to make sure I was ready to listen.

I sat back in my chair.

"Is this about Robert?"

"Yes."

I looked at the table.

The photograph was not there.

For some reason, that made me nervous.

I had grown used to seeing it.

Matthew with his red bucket.

Robert behind him.

The same moment we had examined over and over.

Ramirez rested the folder on the table.

"I want to go through something with you again."

I nodded.

"What?"

"The period between the time you went upstairs and the time you discovered Matthew was missing."

I felt my stomach tighten.

I had returned to those minutes so many times that they seemed almost worn out.

Like a photograph handled too often.

I knew the familiar pieces.

Matthew at the children's club.

Robert nearby.

The reassurance.

The excursion.

The stairs.

The confusion when I came back down.

But there were gaps.

I knew that now.

And I knew how dangerous it could be to fill those gaps with whatever explanation seemed most convincing.

"I'll tell you what I remember."

Ramirez nodded.

"That's all I want."

He opened the folder.

There was a sheet of paper inside.

I could see handwriting on it.

I did not try to read it.

Ramirez looked at me.

"When you left Matthew with Robert, did you see anyone else standing nearby?"

I thought carefully.

I could picture the children's club.

The sand.

The red bucket.

Robert's smile.

There had been other people around.

I remembered that much.

But individual faces were difficult.

"I don't know."

Ramirez made a note.

"Do you remember whether Robert had any reason to leave the children's club?"

I shook my head.

"No."

Then I stopped.

I did not want my answer to sound stronger than my memory.

"Not that I remember."

Ramirez nodded.

"That's different."

"I know."

I rubbed my hands together.

Eleven years earlier, I had trusted Robert.

That was the fact I kept returning to.

I had not left Matthew alone.

I had left him with someone who told me everything was fine.

Someone whose word I believed.

Ramirez waited.

"Did Robert ever tell you he was going somewhere?"

I searched my memory.

"No."

"Did he say he would remain with Matthew?"

I took a breath.

"He said he'd look after him."

Ramirez wrote that down.

I looked toward the adjoining door.

The room beyond it was empty now.

Matthew had gone to continue his day.

He had taken the blue folder with him.

I wondered where he would put it.

Whether he would look at the old photographs again.

Whether the picture of himself covered in flour would make him laugh when I was not there.

Then Ramirez asked another question.

"When you returned downstairs, what was the first thing you noticed?"

I closed my eyes.

I had answered versions of that question many times.

But I tried to begin without relying on the words I had repeated for years.

I remembered noise.

People moving.

A feeling that something was wrong.

I remembered looking for Matthew.

I remembered not seeing him.

I opened my eyes.

"People were searching."

Ramirez nodded.

"Who told you Matthew was missing?"

I stopped.

I had always remembered the moment of realizing he was gone.

But the exact first words were less clear.

"I don't remember."

Ramirez waited.

I felt frustrated.

"I should remember."

He shook his head.

"Don't force it."

I lowered my eyes.

I had said those same words to Matthew.

Don't force it.

Don't invent a memory because someone wants an answer.

Now I had to follow the advice myself.

"I don't remember who said it first."

Ramirez wrote another note.

Then he asked about Robert.

I could feel my shoulders tightening.

"Where did you first see him?"

"Near the pool."

"Are you certain?"

"That's where I remember him."

"What was he doing?"

"Standing."

Ramirez watched me.

"Anything else?"

"Watching the people searching."

He nodded.

I continued.

"He wasn't shouting Matthew's name."

Ramirez wrote slowly.

"Did you see him approach the water?"

"No."

"Did you see him come from the beach?"

I hesitated.

"No. I don't remember that."

He looked at me.

"That's important."

I felt anger rise unexpectedly.

Not at Ramirez.

At the years.

At the empty spaces.

At the fact that my son's life had been turned upside down while I stood somewhere else, unaware.

I rubbed my forehead.

"I keep thinking there must have been something obvious."

Ramirez said nothing.

"Something I could have noticed."

He waited.

I looked at him.

"But I can't find it."

Ramirez put his pen down.

"Dan, an unanswered question doesn't mean you failed to notice the answer."

I stared at the table.

The words were simple.

I did not know whether I believed them.

For years, guilt had become a habit.

Whenever something hurt, I found a way to blame myself.

I went upstairs.

I trusted Robert.

I did not ask enough questions.

I believed the ocean had taken Matthew.

Those facts had followed me through eleven years.

But now I was starting to see the difference between what I had done and what someone else might have done.

I had not witnessed Matthew's disappearance.

That was true.

I had not known he was alive.

That was true too.

But I could not turn every missing piece into something I should have prevented.

I looked up.

"Do you have new evidence?"

Ramirez considered his answer.

"We're still working through the information."

I felt the familiar frustration.

"About Robert?"

"Among other things."

I waited.

He did not continue.

I knew he could not tell me everything.

I hated that.

But I was beginning to understand why.

If Ramirez gave me an unfinished explanation, I might repeat it.

If I repeated it to Matthew, he might begin remembering the story I told rather than the things he actually recalled.

And if we were wrong, we could cause another kind of harm.

I did not want that.

Not to Matthew.

Not even to Robert.

I wanted the truth to stand on something stronger than my anger.

"What can I do?"

Ramirez looked at me.

"Keep being available."

I gave a tired laugh.

"I can manage that."

He smiled slightly.

"And remember that Matthew's memories belong to him."

I nodded.

"I know."

Ramirez closed the folder.

I looked at it.

"Do you think Robert will have to answer these questions?"

Ramirez's expression became serious.

"We're trying to establish everyone's role in what happened."

I nodded.

It was not a promise.

It was not an accusation.

It was the most honest answer he could give me.

I could accept that.

For now.

After a moment, I looked toward the window.

Outside, the light had changed.

A cloud had moved across the sun.

The room seemed darker.

I thought about Matthew's folder.

The photograph of him at thirteen.

The birthday cake.

The bicycle.

All the ordinary things I had not known existed.

"Can I tell you something?"

Ramirez nodded.

"I saw pictures of his life today."

He listened.

"Not from the beach."

I smiled faintly.

"From afterward."

Ramirez nodded.

"How was that?"

I thought about it.

"Hard."

I paused.

"And good."

He waited.

I leaned forward.

"I used to think that if I found him alive, everything would feel better immediately."

Ramirez said nothing.

"But I don't know how to be his father yet."

I looked down.

"I knew how when he was little."

I remembered Matthew falling asleep on my shoulder.

The flour on his cheek.

The toy truck missing a wheel.

"Now I'm learning."

Ramirez nodded.

"That's understandable."

I looked at him.

"He has friends I don't know."

"Yes."

"He has memories I wasn't part of."

"Yes."

"And he might have feelings about the people who raised him that I don't understand."

Ramirez remained quiet.

I swallowed.

"Even Robert."

I hated saying the name in that way.

It made me feel disloyal to Matthew.

But I was beginning to understand something uncomfortable.

My anger toward Robert did not automatically become Matthew's anger.

My son might remember Robert differently.

He might feel confused.

He might miss people.

He might care about someone I could barely stand to think about.

And I could not punish him for that.

I looked at Ramirez.

"I don't want to ask Matthew to choose a side before we even know what happened."

Ramirez nodded.

"That would be wise."

I leaned back.

The truth mattered.

I was not going to abandon it.

But rebuilding a relationship with Matthew was not the same as solving the mystery of his disappearance.

One required evidence.

The other required trust.

And trust could not be forced out of a person because I had waited eleven years.

I thought about the way Matthew had asked whether he could call me.

How carefully he had watched my answer.

How relieved he seemed when I told him he did not have to know what to say.

Those moments mattered.

Not because they explained the past.

Because they gave us somewhere to begin.

Ramirez stood.

"I think that's enough for today."

I nodded.

I gathered my coat.

Then I stopped.

"One more thing."

He looked at me.

"If Matthew asks me about Robert again, what should I say?"

Ramirez considered the question.

"Tell him what you know."

I nodded.

"And what I don't know."

"Exactly."

I looked down.

That sounded simple.

But it was different from the way I had lived for eleven years.

Back then, I had needed explanations.

I had needed a reason Matthew was gone.

I had accepted the ocean because it was the answer everyone repeated.

Now I had to tolerate uncertainty without allowing it to swallow everything else.

I stood.

Ramirez walked me toward the door.

Before leaving, I glanced back at the table.

The folder was closed.

I could not see the photograph inside.

But I knew it was there.

The red bucket.

Robert's smile.

The last ordinary moment before my son's disappearance.

For years, I had wanted the picture to give me an answer.

Now I understood that it could only show me what the camera had captured.

Robert had been with Matthew.

That mattered.

But what happened afterward still needed to be established.

Outside, I sat in my car for a few minutes.

I took out my phone.

There was no message from Matthew.

I had no reason to expect one.

We had not yet worked out the details of calling each other.

Still, I caught myself checking.

Then I put the phone down.

I looked through the windshield.

People were walking across the parking lot.

Someone was carrying a bag of groceries.

A child was holding an adult's hand.

For years, scenes like that had hurt me.

I had watched fathers with their children and thought about everything I would never have.

Now the feeling was different.

I was still sad.

But there was something else beside it.

Possibility.

Matthew wanted to eat pancakes with me.

He wanted to call me.

He wanted to show me more of his life.

Those were small things.

And for a long time, I would have given anything for even one of them.

I started the car.

Before driving away, I said something quietly.

Not to Ramirez.

Not to Matthew.

Only to myself.

"I don't know what happened."

I let the words settle.

Then I added the one thing I did know.

"But I can still be here."

And for the first time, those two truths did not seem to contradict each other.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: When Matthew Asked Me Whether We Could Start Making New Memories, I Realized
