18 – Matthew Brought Photographs From the Years We Were Apart, and I Had to Learn How to Look at His Life Without Making Him Feel Guilty

The next morning, Matthew had a folder waiting on the table.

It was blue.

One corner was bent.

A white label had been peeled from the front, leaving a rough rectangle where the adhesive had been.

I noticed those small details before I noticed anything else.

They gave my eyes somewhere safe to rest.

Because I knew what the folder contained.

Photographs.

Eleven years of a life I had not seen.

Matthew looked up when I entered.

"Morning."

"Morning."

He smiled.

"I brought them."

I glanced at the folder.

"I see that."

He touched the bent corner.

"There's not a lot."

"That's fine."

He looked at me carefully.

"Are you sure you want to see?"

I sat down.

"Yes."

He nodded.

Then he paused.

"I don't really know where to start."

I looked at the blue folder.

"Anywhere you want."

He smiled faintly.

"You're doing that thing again."

"What thing?"

"Being careful."

I laughed.

"I probably am."

Matthew leaned back.

"It's okay."

I nodded.

Then he opened the folder.

The first photograph showed him standing in front of a school building.

He looked about ten.

There was a backpack hanging from one shoulder.

His hair had been cut short.

His expression was serious.

I stared at him.

The face was familiar.

But the age was not.

I had never seen Matthew at ten.

I had never stood beside him before a school day.

I had never reminded him to finish his homework.

I had never complained about shoes left in the hallway.

There he was.

A ten-year-old boy.

Living a Tuesday or a Wednesday or some other ordinary day.

And I had been somewhere else, still believing he was gone.

Matthew watched me.

"That's one of the first school pictures I have."

I swallowed.

"You look serious."

He smiled.

"I hated pictures."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

He pointed toward his face.

"They always told me to smile."

I laughed softly.

"You weren't very good at doing things just because someone asked."

He looked interested.

"Was I like that before?"

"Sometimes."

He smiled.

"Good."

I looked at the photograph again.

There was a shadow across the sidewalk.

Someone had taken the picture from a few steps away.

I wanted to know who.

I wanted to know why I had not been the one holding the camera.

But I kept quiet.

Matthew turned to another photograph.

This one showed him sitting at a table.

There was a birthday cake in front of him.

The candles were bright.

His cheeks were rounded with the effort of blowing them out.

I tried to count the candles.

There were too many overlapping to be certain.

"How old were you?"

"Thirteen."

I nodded.

Thirteen.

I remembered the birthday I had imagined that year.

I had gone through the day wondering what Matthew would have looked like.

Whether his voice would have changed.

Whether he would still love the same things.

Now I was staring at the answer.

He had been alive.

He had eaten birthday cake.

Someone had taken his photograph.

Matthew tilted his head.

"You okay?"

I looked up.

"Yes."

He did not seem convinced.

I breathed slowly.

"It's just strange seeing you at that age."

He looked at the picture.

"Because you didn't know?"

"Yes."

I wanted to say more.

I wanted to tell him how many birthdays I had spent wishing for one more chance.

But the photograph belonged to him.

Not to my grief.

I smiled.

"You looked happy."

He studied the picture.

"I think I was."

There was something uncertain about his answer.

I did not question it.

He turned another page.

There were photographs of him outdoors.

One showed him holding a bicycle.

Another showed him standing beside a basketball hoop.

In one, he was laughing so hard that his eyes were nearly closed.

I found myself smiling.

"You liked riding?"

"Yeah."

"Still do?"

"Sometimes."

He pointed at the bicycle.

"That thing was terrible."

I looked closer.

The handlebars were slightly crooked.

"What happened to it?"

"Everything."

He laughed.

"The chain kept falling off."

I shook my head.

"Sounds familiar."

Matthew looked at me.

"Why?"

I smiled.

"That little truck you had? One wheel was always coming loose."

He laughed.

"Maybe I was just bad with anything that had wheels."

"Could be."

We kept looking.

Sometimes Matthew explained a photograph.

Sometimes he said nothing.

I began to understand that I did not need to know every detail immediately.

I could look at him at ten.

At thirteen.

At fifteen.

I could feel the sadness of those missing years without making him apologize for having lived them.

That mattered.

Because he watched me closely.

Every time I grew quiet, his expression changed.

I could see him wondering whether he had upset me.

I did not want that.

After several photographs, he stopped turning the pages.

"Is this too much?"

I looked at him.

"No."

He glanced at the pictures.

"You got quiet."

I nodded.

"I know."

He waited.

I took a breath.

"Matthew, there's something I need you to understand."

His shoulders tightened slightly.

I noticed.

So I chose my words carefully.

"I'm sad that I missed these years."

He looked down.

"But I'm glad you had them."

He raised his eyes.

I continued.

"I'm glad there were birthdays."

I pointed gently toward the bicycle.

"I'm glad there were things you enjoyed."

He watched me.

"And I'm glad you're here to show me."

His expression softened.

"Okay."

I smiled.

"You don't have to protect me from your own life."

He looked at the folder.

"I wasn't sure if seeing it would hurt."

"It does a little."

He became still.

I continued before he could retreat.

"But that doesn't mean you should hide it."

He studied me.

I let the silence settle.

Then Matthew nodded.

"Okay."

He turned another page.

This photograph was different.

Matthew was older.

Perhaps sixteen or seventeen.

He stood outside a building with a backpack over both shoulders.

There were two other young people beside him.

They were smiling.

Matthew pointed toward one of them.

"That's a friend of mine."

I nodded.

He gave me the name.

I repeated it.

He smiled when I got it wrong.

Then he corrected me.

I tried again.

He laughed.

"Close enough."

I leaned back.

"Your friends must think I'm ancient."

Matthew grinned.

"Probably."

I laughed.

"Fair."

He looked at the picture.

Then at me.

"Do you have friends?"

The question surprised me.

"Yes."

"Do they know about me?"

I felt my throat tighten.

"Yes."

He watched me.

"All of them?"

"Most of them."

He looked down.

"What did you tell them?"

I thought about the answer.

For years, I had told people I lost my son at the beach.

Sometimes I said the ocean took him.

Sometimes I said he disappeared.

I had never known which words were least painful.

Now I wondered what those words might sound like to Matthew.

"I told them you disappeared when you were little."

He nodded.

"And that I never stopped missing you."

His eyes returned to mine.

I added something.

"But I didn't know you were alive."

He looked at the photographs.

"I know."

We sat quietly.

Then he asked something I had been expecting.

"Do they know you found me?"

I smiled.

"Some do."

"Are they going to want to meet me?"

I hesitated.

"Probably."

He looked uneasy.

I shook my head.

"But you don't owe anybody a meeting."

He looked relieved.

"You can decide when you're ready."

"Okay."

I looked at the blue folder.

"Even if that takes a long time."

He nodded again.

We returned to the pictures.

There was one of Matthew standing beside a window.

His hair was longer.

He was wearing a dark shirt.

He looked serious.

I recognized something about the expression.

It was the same look he had worn when I first entered the interview room.

Careful.

Guarded.

As though he was waiting to learn whether he could trust the person in front of him.

I did not say that.

Matthew touched the corner of the photograph.

"That was last year."

I nodded.

"You look older."

He smiled.

"That's generally what happens."

I laughed.

"Apparently."

He looked at me.

"Do I look like you?"

The question stopped me.

I had been studying his face since the first moment I saw him.

I had recognized his eyebrows.

His mouth.

The way he pulled one shoulder forward when he felt uncomfortable.

But I had not known whether he wanted to hear those things.

"Yes."

He leaned forward.

"Really?"

"Yes."

He smiled.

"What part?"

I pointed toward my eyebrows.

"Those."

He looked at me.

Then at the photograph.

He laughed.

"Okay. I see it."

I smiled.

"And you have the same expression I make when somebody asks a question I don't want to answer."

He raised his eyebrows.

"Do I?"

"Absolutely."

He grinned.

"Then that explains a lot."

We laughed together.

For a moment, the years between us seemed less frightening.

Not gone.

Never gone.

Just less powerful.

Then Matthew became quiet.

He looked at the last few photographs.

There was one he had not shown me.

He moved it slightly beneath another.

I noticed.

But I did not ask.

He had the right to decide which pieces of his life he wanted to share.

I remembered how many times he had told me his memories were incomplete.

How much he disliked being pressed.

I was not going to make him feel that the photographs had become another test.

After a while, he looked up.

"Can I ask you about the beach again?"

I nodded.

"If you want."

He rubbed his thumb against his finger.

"Ramirez said they're still trying to figure out what happened."

"Yes."

Matthew looked down.

"Do you think they'll know?"

I considered that.

"I hope so."

He nodded.

I added something.

"But I don't want to tell you I know when I don't."

He looked at me.

"Because of Robert?"

I stayed still.

Robert's name had returned to the room.

The photograph of him smiling behind Matthew was still somewhere in Ramirez's folder.

I thought about the pool.

The people searching.

The eleven years of explanations I had accepted.

"Robert was there that day," I said.

Matthew nodded.

"We know that."

He looked at me carefully.

"But we don't know everything he did."

"No."

Matthew pressed his fingers together.

I waited.

Then he asked something quietly.

"Do you think I should remember him?"

I shook my head.

"I don't think you should have to force yourself to remember anyone."

He lowered his eyes.

I continued.

"If you remember something, you can tell Ramirez."

He nodded.

"But don't guess because you think it'll help me."

He looked at me.

"I know."

I smiled faintly.

"I just want to make sure."

He looked back at the folder.

Then he touched the photograph he had partly hidden.

I said nothing.

After a while, he moved it completely under the others.

I understood that he was not ready to show it.

And for the first time, I felt able to let that be enough.

Matthew closed the folder.

"I think that's all for today."

I nodded.

"Thank you for showing me."

He looked surprised.

"For what?"

"Your life."

He smiled.

"Well, some of it."

"Some of it," I agreed.

He leaned back.

"Maybe I'll bring more later."

"I'd like that."

He looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

"Do you think we could do something outside this room sometime?"

My heart lifted.

I kept my voice calm.

"What did you have in mind?"

He shrugged.

"I don't know."

Then he smiled.

"Maybe pancakes."

I stared at him.

He laughed.

"Without the flour on my face."

I laughed too.

"I think we can manage that."

He looked pleased.

"Or waffles."

"Of course."

He grinned.

"Because I like waffles."

"I remember."

That made him smile wider.

And I realized I had remembered something new about my son.

Not something from eleven years ago.

Not something contained in a photograph.

Something he had told me yesterday.

A preference.

A small, ordinary fact.

Waffles.

It felt almost ridiculous that something so simple could matter so much.

But it did.

A little later, Ramirez knocked and entered.

Matthew closed the blue folder.

Ramirez glanced at us.

"How did it go?"

Matthew smiled.

"Good."

I nodded.

"Good."

Ramirez looked toward the photographs.

"Would you like some more time?"

Matthew considered that.

Then he shook his head.

"Not today."

I respected his answer.

We stood.

Matthew held the folder against his side.

I looked at him.

"Same time tomorrow?"

He smiled.

"Maybe."

I felt the old fear stir.

Only for a second.

Then he continued.

"I might have something else to do in the morning."

I nodded.

"That's okay."

He watched me.

"Really?"

"Yes."

He smiled faintly.

"Maybe afternoon?"

"That works."

He looked relieved.

I understood something important.

The first few days had been filled with meetings.

Carefully arranged conversations.

Time measured by Ramirez's schedule.

But Matthew had a life beyond this room.

He had commitments.

Preferences.

People he knew.

He was not a little boy waiting for me to tell him what came next.

He was old enough to decide how we would get to know each other.

And I wanted him to feel that freedom.

Before we separated, he looked at me.

"Can I call you?"

I felt my chest tighten.

"Yes."

He glanced at Ramirez.

"We can work out how to do that,"
